American problems, a senior requirement, prepares the student to cope with issues which confront the American citizens in government, economics, and inter- national relations and to evaluate himself in choice of a vocation and participation in society. These Page 9 Conferring on student body activities in the principal's office are A.S.B. Second Vice-president Betty Cooley, Mr. Carleton and President Merlin Schulze. People Plan Varied Student Activity Program Full-time dean of girls is Miss Mary Elizabeth Gilbert. Besides serving as counselor, Miss Gilbert supervises Girls' League and all Salem High social activi- ties, and acts as co-adviser to Vikettes Club. Serving as assistant principal as well as dean of boys, Mr. Gurnee Flesher is also responsible for the school calendar, a schedule of all meetings, sport and social events, and assemblies. Porter U. S. History Gertrude R. Smith American Problems Q mai? A general education includes some study of mathematics, which develops clear thinking habits. Many college courses have certain math requirements, students planning on attending college elect math subiects tor this reason. Elementary algebra is the most popular course, while both plane and solid geometry are offered. Trigonometry and senior math are the more advanced classes. Senior math is compiled ot problems in algebra, geometry and Trigonometry, and acts as a preparatory course for college math and engineering training. Page 11
