Salem High School may well b proud of Mr. Frank Bennet Salem's superintendant of school: Mr. Bennett is one of twenty-fiv superintendants in the Unite States chosen to attend the Co umbia Educational Conference Q Columbia University, New Yor City, this summer. He will als serve as a member of the facult- at Oregon College of Educatio during the summer session. As superintendant, he ha shown understanding of the prol lems of high school students an has fostered a far-sighted polic of development for the school sys tem. Mr. Bennett possesses keen, analytical mind and a pleas ing manner, especially evident i his many public appearances ar a speaker. FRANK B. BENNETT The Salem school board is composed of five members who, in cooperation with Mr. Bennett, are the group responsible to the citizens of the community for the maintenance of the public schools. Each is a prominent person in the civic life of the community and is elect- ed for five years by the voters of his district. Heading the board this year is Mr. Bay Harland, chairman, followed by Mr. Donald A. Young, vice-chairman, and Mr. Connell C. Ward, clerk. By rotating in office once a year every member of the board is given opportunity to become the head officer. Much of the detail work is done by standing committees appointed by the chairman. These people serve without compensation and seldom receive the honor due them. ln addition to attending bi-monthly meetings, each must assume the personal responsibility for study, consideration, and finally a vote upon issues that affect the whole future of education in the city. They have demonstrated a real interest in the educational problems of the schools. The school board represents a cross section of the community. Two lawyers, an insur- ance representative, a merchant, and a hou'sewife are serving at this time. puma ' , Mr. Edmund Carleton, who is just completing his twelfth year at Salem High School and his sec- ond as principal, was first a mem- ber of the mathmatics depart- ment and later assistant principal. Looking back over this period, Mr. Carleton feels that there has been increasing cooperation on the part of student leaders with the administration and that regard for the school has grown corres- pondingly in the community and state. Particularly proud of the attitude shown by the student body at the loss of the championship in basketball, Mr. Carleton is well pleased with the accomplishments of this year. EDMUND A. CARLETON A liberal point of view that develops from a great wealth of information and the sound judgment that reflects wide experience are characteristic of Miss Mable Robertson, retiring this year from her position as dean of girls and teacher of world history. Since the fall of 1921 when she came to teach in Salem High School, through four years as head of the history department, and finally in the position of dean, Miss Robertson has formed an ever widening circle of friends that now encompasses thousands of Salem High alumni. Students have been quick to sense her cordial interest in young people, her intel- lectual curiosity, and her zest for living. Miss Robertsonls present plans are to pursue her varied interests in Salem and further develop her 'skill in weaving and gardening. ln the near future she hopes to visit England and France. Gurnee Plesher, whose duties are those of both assistant principal and dean of boys, is known for a quiet manner and calm decision. Being a sports enthusiast since college days at Willamette University, Mr. Flesher came to Salem High as a member of the physical education department. His interest in the Vikings is still a major one, but for personal participation in the field of sports he now favors fishing, hunting and horse back riding. MABLE P. ROBERTSON GURNEE I-'LESHER
