THE 1946 MARDI GRAS Nlardi Gras came to Salem high under the sponsorship ot' Civics clulm on Felmruarlv 8. ln this year's carni- val over 200 students representing 7 dit't'c-rent clulis presented skits in keeping with this year's theme. Prize-winning skits were as t'ol- lows: first place. lVlardi Gras Salad, Home Ececluhg selections from Naughty lVlarietta,', Crescen- do club: and honorahle mention, Under Seasf, Pep club. Bill Sharp was judged the hest individual per- former. Persons who deserved special mention tor their efforts in making this year's carnival a success are script and continuity, Al Lane, Bet- ty Lou Edwards, and Harriet Hus- ton: stage design and execution, lohn Griffith and Al Laueg lewell Gueffro-v, who composed an original suite for the musical scoreg idea, Buster Wilsculig specialties, Ioan Randall, and programs, lim Rag- land. Adviser for the affair was Mrs. Gertrude Smith. Assisting her were Nlrs. Gertrude Schisler and Mr. Del Ramsdell, stage: Mr. Geo, Brant, tickets: and lwiss lune Phil- pott, concessions. One ot' the main ohjects of the Civics Cluli Carnival is to give as many students as possilile an op- portunity to act on the stage. VIEWS OF Miss Hollenheck's hamsters are nothing hut ele- vated rats. They have risen higher than their rat hrothers hecause they have the same eating hahits and diseases as man. They are also said to he cuddly and to make nice pets. But it would he advisahle to look at them in 215 hefore deciding on one tor a pet. This is one of the 59 classrooms in the Viking villa containing some 61 teachers who hand out the hooks, talks, tests, and other assignments so dear to every student. Rooms throughout the building, furnishing everything from chemistry to gym or Spanish to typing, are where approximate- ly six hours of every school day are spent hy young seekers of knowledge. A constant source of information in Salem high are the hulletin hoards. News of coming events, dances, movies, assemhlies, play casts, and cluh activities make the hoards in the main hall into a colorful scene. Pictured here is the Clarion Boardu where latest editions of our newspaper ap- pear along with various exchange papers. When you say, l don't want to go to the lihraryg l can't find anything or get anything done there, you are speaking of the largest, hest-lighted, and quietest room in the huilding. It contains over 8,000 hooks, of any suhject, and of any shape, color or size. Also 70 current magazines are suhscrihed to, and over l,000 checked out every month. The hook department keeps an average of 160 checked out a day or 4,800 a month. Miss Goodnough and her staff of 17 workers assure you of a quiet place, with plenty of room to work, for the lihrary seats 120.
