W QQ v.m-M , sw mmm: Q 1 mmm, .mmwff principal This annual is a record of happy events. The memories and reminders contained herein will be recognized many times as the happiest in your experience. As you advance in years you Will more and more realize that high school days are the days when you really had enjoy- able times. This page represents a department of the school that seems remote from the individual student, and yet, in a sense is closer than many other divisions. The principal, the deans, and the office staff in general see the school as a whole. The keeping of the records, looking after the personal needs of everyone, organizing, encouraging, consoling, helping to plan are some of the multitude of jobs that clear through the office staff. T lt Was but a short time ago that l became a member of this school. The fine spirit Very Well exemplified in this book has helped me to gain enjoyment from my Work. lt is my hope that l have contributed something to make high school life worthwhile. HARRY B. IOHNSON, Principal Miss Mabel P. Robertson dean of girls dean of boys ...g.. Mr. Harry Bjohnson Mr. Frank E. Near Superintendent of Schools Mr. Frank B. Bennett superintendent of schools The mark of a great school is the character of its students and the leadership of its faculty. ln these respects Salem can be justly proud. When one adds to these the excellent building and equipment of our senior high school, We indeed must recognize our great opportunity and responsibility. We have, however, additional promise in past-War development of minor but important additions to our plant and the development of a splendid athletic field with new grandstands, turf, and lighted field. When these developments are accomplished, Salem will indeed have physical properties affording the best in education. The administration eagerly joins with student body and faculty in our common purpose to attain real excellence for Salem High School. - FRANK B. We sincerely regret if we have inadvertently omitted any names that should appear in this roster ot honored dead. The Editor 15- 'Glasses Here We acquire knowledge, skills, cmd lidecds Q-16- Led through their final year at ye old Vik Villa by President Arthur Hap Englebart, the class of 1945 brought to a close a highly successful three years of high school. Vice-president Ieanne Foster capably kept up the social affairs and activities of the class. Events were a class banquet, a dance, and a gigantic pencil sale, all of which were climaxed in the spring by the Farewell Banquet, and the Senior Class Farewell Assembly. Carolyn Carson proved a competent secretary. Tom Boardman, as treasurer, managed the various monetary affairs of the class, and Art Gottfried served as sergeant at arms. Preceding his induction into the navy in December, Iim Shawver filled the position of forensic manager. Iacqueline Torgerson was class song queen. Senior class representatives to the A.S.B. Council were Connie Cocking, Ruby Burnham, and Loren Helmhout. From the 576 students enrolled as Sophomores three years ago, the class has dwindled down to a total graduating body of 368. This unusual decreasemay be attributed to the fact that increasing numbers of senior boys have entered our armed services. Serving on the Senior Class Council were Frank Bales, Bill Barlow, Dorothy Boyes, Iim Bradshaw, Don Eastridge, Dessa Lee Holmes, Betty Lou Kayser, Lee Nash, Bob Odle, Leonard Perlich, Ianet Rilea, lack Slater, Patricia Van de Coevering, and Harry Wiedmaier. V The ASB officers of l944-45 again put the war effort foremost in their minds. lt was due to the un- tiring effort of president Bob Macy and his fellow officers that Salem Highs 320,000 bond quota was oversubscribecl. Even during the stress of war, vice president Addyse Lane was able to give the students a well-rounded social program. Helen Paulson capably filled the position of secretary, and a very successful handling of the ticket sales was conducted by forensic manager, Doug Berwick. Order was maintained at all assemblies and council meetings by sergeant-at-arms, Bill Barlow. The ASB officers and council were the governing body of the school. During the year they met at specific times to pass upon all affairs and activities of the school. Members of the council were as follows: Connie Cocking, Ruby Burnham and Loren Helmhout capably represented the Seniors, Harriet Huston, William Wilson, and Bill Merriam gave their opinions for the luniors, and Warren Bacon and George Zurlinden were chosen to represent the Sophomores. The play opens in a peaceful midwestern college town in the home of a professor, Michael Frame. The professor, his energetic young daughter, Pat, the German housekeeper, Frieda, the professor's sister, Iessie, and his fiance Leona, are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a poor little German refugee, Emil Brucker. When Emil arrived the town was no longer peaceful. He was not a poor refugee but a Hitler Youth. Emil, then, proceeded to organize his private spy system, break up the professors engagement, kill the neigh- bor's dog and, in general, make himself thoroughly unpopular. The most evil of all his deeds occurred when he struck lovable Pat with a bookend. However, it ended with Emil feeling very remorse-- ful and although the problem was by no means solved, there was a hope for the future Clarion Annual Staff Beverly Davies, editor, Bob Weber, manager, Buster Wilson, photographe Despite the last minute rush in lU5 to meet the March 15 deadline, work Was started early in the summer when Editor Davies conferred with the adviser, Miss Roberts, about the l945 Clarion. Early fall found the staff organized in home room lO5. Don McAllister, a newcomer to Salem high, soon began Work on the cover and Emerald Pickett, another art student designed various layouts, Sports Editor loe Carroll planned his section and he and Bus Wilson were often seen outside trying to get the action shots that appear on pages 98-99. In December senior pictures and individual Writeups were arranged by Lillian Hoffman, Barbara Hoadley and Grace Ashford. Unfortunately the group picture schedule did not coincide with our good Weather, and much confusion resulted spite of well made plans. No sooner was the football section completed than basketball pictures had to be taken. ln February Bev completed the three dummies. Pat Pearson and loe Carroll began to mount and arrange the pictures, most of which were taken by Bus Wilson. Marvel DeGuire, Helen Shepard, Lois Burris and Lee Nash assisted With the final writeups while Pat Pearson and lean Hatfield spent much of their time typing the copy. Other members who deserve special mention are Pat Larson, Mary Elizabeth Reinhart, Vinita Howard, Cathy Moran, Caro- lyn Davis, and Don lohnson. n Bob Weber, his staff, and Mr. Doughton deserve praise for financing this l945 year book.
