Like other executives, he has had to cope with many difficult problems in the school year of l943-44, not the least of these being to find replacements for teachers and to obtain equipment for the maintenance of the Salem Public Schools. Mr. Frank B. Bennett Q3 an School Board The Salem School Board, ever awake to our changing needs, is this year giving serioug- consideration to a postewar improvement program. This new responsibility, in addition to the task of maintaining our schools in these difficult times, has made the year a busy ong for the Board. Elected by the voters of the Salem school district to serve on the school board are M' Donald Young, chairman, lvlr. Connell Ward, clerk-business manager, Mrs David Wrialitg Dr. Leon Barrick, Mr. Roy Harland: and Mr. Ralph Campbell, 11 e- For fifteen years Principal Fred D. Wolf conducted the administrative duties of Salem High School lt was necessary for him to carry an even heavier load this year because no assist- ant principal was selected to replace Mr. Edmund Carlton who entered the Navy a year ago. Also, he was Without the services of Mr. larnes C. Nelson during the second semester. Through his efforts the scope of the curriculum and extra-curricular activities was broadened to meet the exacting demands of the War. Principal Wolf submitted his resignation to the School Board in February, and Mr. Walter Snyder, director of curriculum in Salem, took over the duties of principal for the remainder of the year. War conditions and extended activities have combined to increase the Work of the office staff. During the year they have been on the job from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. six days a week. ln addition to the usual clerical Work, which includes many tasks besides the arranging of schedules, checking attendance and tardiness, they have had to prepare records for former Salem High students entering the armed forces. Mr. Iames Nelson, Registrar and Principal Emeritus, was a member of the efficient office staff until his death in Ianuary, l944. Other members are Mrs. Bertha Finch and Miss Ramona Lenaburg. -12- i Mr. FredD Wolf Office Staff' Shown here behind her desk in her private office is Miss Mabel P, Robertson, dean of girls It is here that she carries on her many duties which include solving girls' problems, arrang- ing the school's social calendar, and fitting the girls into the war effort. She also teaches three periods of American problems and acts os adviser for Girls' League. During the past year Miss Robertson also found time to work with Salem patriotic organizations and to read many books. Miss Mabel P. Robertson f i E2 it Mr. Frank E. Neer In Mr. Frank E. Neer Salem High School has a dean of boys whose interests are varied. During the morning hours he may be found in room 109 teaching American history. In the afternoon he is either in his private office or the main office performing some of his many tasks. One of Mr. Neer's special hobbies is that of helping students obtain scholarships. This he has enjoyed for about three years, and at present a number of former Salem High students are attending various colleges on scholarships obtained under his guidance. The dean is also an enthusiastic gardener and devotes much of this leisure time to the cultivation of his gardens on North Church street. -13.- Facult . . . m W WE 4 Buck Row: Miss Vivian Chandler, Mr. Tom Drynan, Miss Ann Boentje, Mr. Gurnee Flesher, Miss Margaret Burroughs, Mrs. Agnes Derry, Mr. George Birrell.
