Firsl rou':.fllIen, Callew, Grant, Page, Fry Second raw: Limnl, Holstein, Niles, Selander, VanPa1lun ' Perhaps the most important of the governing bodies of Student Councll Salem High School is the ASB. Council. NVith a mem- bership of eleven it stands at the head of the school, performing those duties that help it to function efficiently, The weekly meetings, held during General Study Period, are open to any A.S.B. member except for the privilege of debate. Its principal duties are the maintenance of school spirit, enforcement of the constitution, and the enforcement of regulations conceming school discipline. Appropriations for debate pins, pins for the editor and manager of the Clarion and Clarion Annual are passed. ln addition, all social affairs by the associated student body are planned at the meetings under the direction of the vice president. The school dances and particularly the basket social of April 23, were both success- ful and entertaining. On April 22 the A.S.B, sponsored a performance in the auditorium by john Lindbcck, former Salem High student now attending Willamette University. Well- knoxvn in the school for his talent at performing tricks of magic, Lindbeck was enthusiastically received by a large and appreciative audience. Proceeds from the program were for the purpose of sending a speaker to represent Salem at the forensic meeting in jacksonville, Illinois. Bill Thomas, ASB. president, and outstanding dehater, was the student selected to attend the convention. All ASB. ofhcers are considered ex-officio members of the council. Additional members, including five seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores, are elected in the regular class elections. At the last meeting in the spring three of the members, two juniors and one sophomore, are elected by the council to serve the following year. This year, besides the A.S.B. ofheers, the council consisted of seniors, jerry Cottew, Harold Allen, jean Holstein, Clifford Niles, and Richard Wilson, juniors, Phyllis Selander, Elizabeth Grant, Willard Grant, Robert Van Patton 5 sophomores, Mary Lee Fry, Frank Page. fourteen

Tlmmax Goadenaugli Coodenaugli Parker Gibson Officers ln spite of the near empty treasury which confronted the new president this year Bill Thomas proved himself exceptionally capable in this emergency. Due to his efforts assemblies were notice- ably quieter and more interest in school activities was shown. Bill is exceptionally talented along the line of public speaking and has contributed much to the success of the debate teams during his three years in high school. Maxine Goodcnough, vice president, was responsible for the three student body dances, Viking Revue, and the basket social which were very original and amusing. Important records of our school activities were written for posterity by our secretary Eileen Goodenough, She has many good qualities, but the one which is most outstanding is her willingness to cooperate with the faculty and students. Sergeant-at-arms V ietor Gibson showed much enthusiasm throughout the year at council meetings and other activities, has contributed many clever ideas for social functions and money-making propositions and has given valuable aid concerning hnancial problems. Songs at assemblies, basketball games, and football games were effectively lead by Lou Hickman, Although wee in stature, Orval Cooley has a powerful voice which can be heard throughout assemblies and grandstands. Orval has added much to the pep and school spirit of Salem Hi and has been suspected of causing an increase in attendance at games. The Salem High School bonfire previous to the Eugene-Salem game was noted for being the largest one yet and we have Orval to thank for this, Bill Parker, forensic manager, having charge of the reorganization of the minute men, song and yell contest, and other class rivalries has executed his many duties in an efficient manner, Although Bill entered school this year as a senior, he rapidly gained recognition by the student body as a concientious, dependable, and hard-working person. llt i rlecn
