You are a splendid group. We hope and believe that this class of 203, has many great opportunities awaiting you. Never in our history has there been such a great need for well trained people, and never have so many scholarships been available for those of you who rank high in your class. There is an important place for each of you whose training is sound and for each of you who has the earnest desire to make good. HAROLD BOOKHOUT In addition to his teaching respon- sibilities, Mr. Harold Bookhout also serves as the assistant principal of S.C.H.S. Mr. Bookhout is able to per- form well in this capacity since he has had a great deal of experience in teach- ing and in administration. A native of Salem, Mr. Bookhout taught at Junior High School for eleven years, at Salem Community High School for two years, and was Assistant County Superintendent of Schools for two years. This past November Mr. Bookhout was elected the County Superintendent of Schools. Miss Maxine Business training, as taught by Mr. Beryl Jett, explains the skills needed in business and the understanding of practices in the business world. Here Mr. Jett points out some of the effects the business world has on our lives. BUSINESS Mrs. Judy Prock explains the advantages of brief forms and phrases to her first year short- hand students. This shorthand course is helpful to those who wish to be successful secretaries. Mr. Beryl C. ENGLISH r Mr. James D. Green B.S. in Ed.; M.S. in Ed.; English; Southern Illinois University. 14 Word usage, as interpreted by Mr. James Green, plays an important part in each person's life. Mr. Green's freshman Eng- lish classes also study spelling, punctuation, and sentence struc- ture in addition to literature. Miss Blanche Stoafer ex- plains The Ransom of Red Chief to her freshman English students. The freshmen are looking for- ward to studying Great Expecta- tions later in the year. All types of reference books are available for students working on book reports, term papers, and extra credit projects. Miss Genevieve Hayes is the compe- tent librarian at S.C.H.S. Mrs. Thelma Farthing ex- plains to her second year Latin students, that English and Latin are closely related tooneanoth- er. The second year students concentrate chiefly on transla- tion. FOREIGN LANGUAGES The language lab is avail- able to Miss Winifred Jones's Spanish students for help in speaking and listening. During the year students study Spanish language and customs. Miss Ruth Brandes, full- time guidance counselor, pro- vides helpful assistance for juniors and seniors. Here Miss Brandes advises several stu- dents in regard to colleges and their educational future. Mr. Stanton Hughes B.S.; M. Ed.; Guidance; Western Kentucky State College, University of Illinois; Guidance Club. 18 GUIDANCE This year Mr. Stanton Hughes has been employed as the freshman-sophomore guidance counselor. Here, Mr. Hughes as- sists several underclassmen in choosing subjects which will be beneficial to them in their choice of a vocation. Geography as taught by Mr. Harold Bookhout, is the study of natural topography. Here Mr. Bookhout explains physical fea- tures and land formations to a group of interested students. SOCIAL SCIENCE The history of the ancient world is taught by Mr. Dwaine Crane in his World History class. In addition to ancient history, the students discuss topics from Weekly News Reviews. Here Mr. Crane explains the advan- tages and disadvantages of open- housing to his students. Mr. Dwaine L. Crane B.S. in Ed.; M.Ed.; History; Southern Illinois University; University of Illinois; Salemarion; Broadcaster; Hi-Y. Miss Ruby Meredith B. Ed.; M.A.; History, American Problems;Southern Illinois University, University of Illinois; Hi Tri; Junior Class. In her American history class. Miss Ruby Meredith often assigns current events reports from the World Week magazine to students. Discussions in this class range from the beginnings of the thirteen colonies to current world events. Miss Mary L. Peace B.S.; M.A.; History; Southern Illinois University, University of Illinois, University of Chicago; Junior Class. 20 SOCIAL SCIENCES Miss Mary Peace brings the sometimes drab subject of Amer- ican history to life by the use of supplementary material. In this class the students are required to write several book reports and a term paper. Mrs. Violet Rhodes requires extreme neatness in her first year home economics class. The first two six weeks, the students study sewing, and they learn the basic fundamentals. In her second year home econom- ics class, Mrs. Nesta Stewart explains the importance of nu- trition. During the year students in Mr, R. F. Autenrieth's advanced algebra classes learn to solve many varied forms of algebraic equations. They learn to factor polynomials, to solve quadratic equations, and to perform other operations. They also learn the fundamental properties of our complex number system. ■ Mr. Robert Eller B.S.; Boys' Physical Education, Mathematics; Freshman Basketball Coach, Assistant Football Coach, Golf Coach, Intramural Basketball; University of Illinois. 22 MATHEMATICS In Mr. Robert Eller's prac- tical math class, students learn the basic principles of mathe- matical operations. This knowl- edge will provide a foundation for further studies in the field of mathematics. Plane geometry students in Mrs. JoAnn Walstrom's classes This knowledge may later be applied to geometric figures in learn principles and theorems space, concerning figures in planes. Mrs. JoAnn Wahlstrom B.S.; Mathematics, Southeast Missouri State College. MATHEMATICS Mr. Harold Woodruff fre- quently uses the overhead pro- jector to explain equations to his Algebra I classes. During the year the students learn to solve equations, to recognize axioms, and to understand our number system. Mr. Harold Woodruff B.A.; Mathematics; Southern Illinois University. 23 Mr. Norman Hanes, Jr. B.M.S.; M.M.E.; Band, Instrumental Music; Millikin University, Illinois Wesleyan University. In addition to conducting the marching, concert, and sym- phonic bands, Mr. Norman Hanes, Jr,, also teaches classes in in- strumental music. During this time students receive instruction in the use of their individual instruments. Miss Charlotte Holt B.M.; M.A.; Harmony, Theory, Voice, Director Vocal Music; Southern Illinois University, Bush Conservatory, Northwestern University, Columbia University; Madrigal Singers, Mixed Chorus, Boys' Chorus, Girls' Chorus. 24 MUSIC Miss Charlotte Holt directs different choral groups, including glee club, chorus, and madrigals. During the year these groups per- form at many concerts and par- ticipate in various contests. In years past, they have won many honors in singing. Physical fitness is a major his physical education class in part in the life of today's youth. a series of group calisthenics. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Exercises and sports activi- ties are included in the girls P. E. program as planned by Miss Jean Dennis. Deason B.E.; M.A.; Biology, Assistant Football Coach; Southern Illinois University, Colorado State College of Education. Biology students in Mr. Lester Deason's classes fre- quently work in the laboratory. During this time they may clas- sify insects or leaves or work with the microscopes. Lab work plus class recitation provides a good foundation in biology. Mr. Robert Jamison B.S.; Chemistry, Physiology; Eureka College; Science Club; Pep Club; Chaparels. 26 SCIENCE Mr. Robert Jamison often instructs his chemistry students in the proper methods of per- forming experiments in the lab- oratory. In addition to experi- ments, the students also take part in extensive classroom work. In Mr. Mark Johnson's phys- iology classes, students receive basic knowledge in health and anatomy. They make notebooks pertaining to the current course of study. During the latter part of the year, the classes study occupational civics. Mr. Mark H. SCIENCE INTERRELATED VOCATIONAL Interrelated Cooper- ative Vocational Education, anew program at S.C.H.S., is designed to train students as they work. Mr. B. J. Lance is the coordi- nator. Most students work half a day and attend school half a day. Students receive two credits from the class. In this program students learn to do in an on- the-job atmosphere. Mr. B. J. Lance B.S. Arnold B.S.; M.S.; Woodworking; Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University. Students in Mr. Paul Arnold's wood classes use selec- ted hardwoods to construct var- ious pieces of furniture. During the year they learn the proper use of such equipment as rad- ical arm saw, lathe, and thick- ness planer. Mr. Robert D. Cone B.S.; M. Ed.; Agriculture; Centralia Junior College, University of Illinois, Junior Class; F.F.A. 28 VOCATIONAL Soil science, taught by Mr. Robert Cone, provides boys with a foundation for later work in agriculture. This course i s a great asset for those who will later be employed in fields re- lated to farm management. Mr. W. B. Matthews teaches varied topics related to archi- tectural drawing and engineering. This course is a firm foundation for further studies in drafting and mechanical drawing. VOCATIONAL Classes in farm shop, under the supervision of Mr. Kenneth Poole, receive instruction in op- erating modern farm machinery. This will help in running a farm successfully. Mr. William B. They also participate in classroom discus- sion. In this manner, they learn the fundamentals of driving. Another new program at S.C.H.S. this year is Mrs. Anna Watson's reading class. The members travel to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale several times a year for choral clinics and festivals. Besides these trips, the Glee Club and Chorus perform atthe school Christmas program and at various club meetings, and last year they held a choral concert in the B.E. Gum Gymnasium. Their most extensive concert tour is planned for June 10, 1967. The group will travel to Florida with stop- overs at Daytona Beach and Miami Beach. They will then board the SS Bahama Star for a four day cruise to Nassau, the capitol of the Bahama Islands. A parade and con- certs will be presented in Nassau and aboard ship.
