Salem's schools are able to maintain their high standards because of the unselfish dedi- cation of the members of the school board who serve without pay. On them falls the responsi- bility of governing the school system. They must be capable of recognizing needs and making decisions that keep the schools in competition with the best. The members are elected for three-year terms, and two are elected each year, excluding the third year, when three members are elected. The board is made up of a lawyer, an insurance agent, a secretary, two farmers, a supervisor of Stanford Engineering Company, a supervisor of Lightning Supply Company, and a supervisor of a Standard Oil filling station. MR. B. E. GUM For twenty-nine years Mr. B.E. Gum, our superintendent, has run S.C.H.S. smoothly and efficiently. His prime interest is the welfare and future success of the student. Mr. Gum is the president of the Salem Memorial Hospital Board, vice- president of the Library Board, a mem- ber on the board of the First Christian Church, and vice-president of the Marion County TB Board. He is also a member of the Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. In spite of the above time con- suming schedule, Mr. Gum is always ready to counsel, guide, and advise the students of S.C.H.S. 7
