m r 1 pZmJ ■ r 0 When time who steals our years away Shall steal our pleasures too. The mem'ry of the past will stay And half our joys renew. Moore In presenting this year's Salemarion, we, the staff, have endeavored to catch a few fleeting glimpses of the relatively short school year and arrange them into memorable form. We sincferely hope that when you read this book, it will mean more to you than simply a photographic coverage of the year's events; that it will renew and instill in you those memories which are so dear to the students of S.C.H.S. — memories of the friendships so precious and meaningful, of the social events which helped to liven the daily routine of study, of the goals attained through good hard work; and memories of the teachers, whose primary interest is to provide a well-rounded education for the student. It is our desire that you cherish these memories and honor the S.C.H.S. spirit perpetuated by them — the spirit of high ideals, of democratic principles, and of a rich and full education. With this intention we present the 1966 Salemarion. To the teachers of S.C.H.S.: for their appre- ciation of our limitations and failings, for their understanding and sympathy with our i m ma ture status, for their patient endurance of our foolish whims, for their ready praise for our worthier endeavors, and for their willing gift of priceless experiences, we, the class of 1966, gratefully dedi- cate this, our yearbook. Salem's schools are able to maintain their high standards because of the unselfish dedi- cation of the members of the school board who serve without pay. On them falls the responsi- bility of governing the school system. They must be capable of recognizing needs and making decisions that keep the schools in competition with the best. The members are elected for three-year terms, and two are elected each year, excluding the third year, when three members are elected. The board is made up of a lawyer, an insurance agent, a secretary, two farmers, a supervisor of Stanford Engineering Company, a supervisor of Lightning Supply Company, and a supervisor of a Standard Oil filling station. It is equipped with many valuable sets of books, the latest magazines, and various types of other reference material which are useful to the student. Besides being beautiful and spacious, the library sup- plies an atmosphere which is conducive for study. It is in use during regular class periods and is also open before school and at noon for the advantage of the students. Suddenly she was gone, yet we know not why. Her life had been a happy, glowing crown. Now it is over, never again to be found. Her family will always know the sharp pain That comes from the mere mention of her name. The sweetheart and many friends so true Will be among those who miss her too. The memories will always be so very near Of this loving friend we all held so dear. Time can never erase or begin to take away The memory of the friend we lost that day. Rita Faye Behnke parted this world, with her parents, in a car wreck that occurred on December 24, 1965. She was a senior at Salem Community High School.
