Barbara Jett seems, in this picture, to have the whole class in- terested . “AMO, AMAS, AMAT. Many people think Latin and other languages are all bookwork, but this class finds many pictures pertaining to Latin, which make the course more interesting. 6 IS IT I-E OR E-I In this freshman English class the students are busily working on a spelling test. Miss Blanche Stoafer, the teacher, knows that spelling and word usage both play an important part in each person's life. “BOOKS AND DREAMS ARE EACH A WORLD Miss Anna Jane Wham is showing one of her sophomore literature classes a picture of Rudyard Kipling, an author, about whom they are studying. 7 DOES X- YORY-X? First year algebra is taught by Mr. Don Shuman, a new faculty member this year, who, in this picture, is explaining to one of his classes the method of solving practical problems by algebra. DESIGNERS OF TOMORROW Advanced drawing, taught by Mr. William B. Matthews, requires skill, time, practice, effort, and neatness on the part of all the boys taking the course, some of whom go into drawing jobs direct from high school. 8 are the goals of these first year typing students, taught by Mrs. Edna Webster, who is another new faculty member this year. These busy students seem to be working hard on a speed test. NEATNESS AND ACCURACY- are very important in bookkeeping. This course helps many students who plan to go into the field of business. Miss Maxine Hawley has taught typing and bookkeeping here for several years. SPEED AND ACCURACY- LEARNING ABOUT LIFE Biology, taught by Mr. Lester Deason, is a course in which the students get the funda- mentals of many different sciences. The students in this picture are very much interested in insect life. Oswald, the anatomy model, has helped many students understand the various parts of the physical body. Tommy Horner and Dave Westerman are pointing out to the class some of the important parts of the digestive system. Miss Ruth Brandes, besides teaching physiology, helps students to decide their careers in a guidance program. LEARNING IN THE LAB Pictured above is Mr. Harry Mueller and one of his chemistry classes. Students taking this course perform many experiments in the lab throughout the year. Taking time from his busy life, Mr. Mueller directs the cheerleaders as well as two school organizations. “How tall is it? asks Martha Lackey of Jerry Stoncipher, who is measuring the height of one of the physics demonstrations showing osmosis. The class had been observing the results of their experiment for the past few days, and John Bennett and Mr. Roland Autenrieth seem very much interested in the results. CITIES . . . COUNTRIES . . . CONTINENTS . . . This class travels to many different cities, countries, and continents through their studies in geography class. Mr. Dwaine Crane is looking on as Jim Noe illustrates his point by reference to a map. HOMEMAKERS OF TOMORROW In Miss Dolores Armstrong's home ec class the girls learn some of the various duties of a homemaker. Included in these studies are cooking, sewing, grooming, designing, and interior decorating. 12 BUILDERS OF THE FUTURE The boys in Mr. Bernie Lance's shop class learn how to operate the various types of machines that are used when they build furniture later in the course. Cedar chests, end tables, and desks are some of the pieces produced. WORK. . .WORK. . .WORK Mr. Kenneth Poole has taught at Salem High School for many years. In his classes the boys have a project which they work on throughout the year—repairing equipment they bring from home. 13 EXERCISE. . .EXERCISE Softball is among the favorite sports in Miss Jean Dennis's P. E. classes. Development of muscular coordination is the main purpose of this class. Exercises play a very important part in boys' P. E. classes. Mr. Walt Kirk, besides being a P. E. teacher, is head coach of the basketball team and assistant coach of the foot- ball team. 14 THOSE UNSUNG HEROES Not very much is ever said about our bus drivers or our custodians, but without them our school could not be operated so efficiently. The bus drivers are, left to right, top to bottom, Mr. Earl Taylor, Mr. Leroy Heflin, Mr. Charles Stevenson, Mr. Woody Garner, and Mr. Paul Purcell. The custodians are, left to right, top to bottom, Mr. Arch Sorrell, Mr. Oscar Williams, Mr. Harry Phelps, Mr. Robert Morton, Mr. Herman Schaubert, and Mr. Kenneth Crippen. 1 5 A SPACIOUS LIBRARY We students of S. C. H. S. are very fortunate in that we have such a well-equipped and well-run library. Miss Genevieve Hays and her student librarians are always ready to assist anyone who might need help in finding information in the library. AN EXPERT STAFF The head dietician at S. C. H. S. is Mrs. Ava Newman, who with the help of her staff, prepares a well-planned meal each day in a modern, well-equipped kitchen. The staff is as follows, from left to right, Mrs. Ava Newman, Mrs. Mae Fry, Mrs. Virginia Pechar, Mrs. Oneta Stevenson, and Mrs. Ellen Hixon. 16 There are many stu- dents who help the cafe- teria staff each day at noon. These pupils do a very efficient job. Pictured above are a few scenes from a day in our high school cafe- teria. As you can see, many students eat here. IT They said It couldn't be done. They dood it. Well La-Tee- Dah. Handy Andy. Bashful and bushed. Also bushed; wonder why? Hikel I Fast dancing? Ah shaddupl Lost billfold? Ya got me. Study hall? Conversation and camera hog. Hot rodders. I'll have a root beer. Now hear this I Who, me? Freshman, no doubt. Hello up there. Ah'm from (hie) Texas. The thinker? Muriel and friend. Watch it, Lou! To The Seniors Of 1959: We congratulate you, the class of 1959, one hundred ninety strong! It has been my very happy privilege and pleasure to have worked with you through the past years, hence, have learned to know you well. Many of you are very well prepared to go on to college, and it is my sincere wish that you do so. Your world almost demands that you be well trained if you expect to accomplish much. We hope that you may keep in touch with us after your graduation, and that we may still be of some service and help to you in the future. You are going to get out of life just about what you put into it. Best of luck to each one of you. Sincerely, B. E. Gum, Supt. BEG:EDK Superintendent B. E. Gum Pictured above is Mr. B. E. Gum, the ever faithful superintendent of Salem schools. We students can always find him in his office, ready and willing to help us with any problems we may have. He has many duties and responsibilities, which are never neglected. Because of Mr. Gum's executive ability and long and valuable experience, Salem Community High School has established an enviable reputation for smooth running efficiency. The Salemarion here salutes, with respect and admiration, our superintendent. At the top of the page are pictured the office secretaries, Mrs. Eileen Koelling and Miss Mary Jane O'Bryant, who expertly assist Mr. Gum in the central office. 21 Boards of Education The men and women who are elected to serve on our Boards of Education are loyal and interested citizens who have only one desire — to make our schools the very best possible. We of the staff feel that we have an outstanding group, who serve us very efficiently. These members are never too busy to take time from their daily work to solve the problems and determine the policies of our schools. Serving their community without pay, these board members are responsible to a very great extent for the high standing and efficiency of our school systems. Therefore we gratefully dedicate this page to our Boards of Education of Districts 111 and 600. In the top picture, left to right, the members of the Board of District 111 are: Mf. Lee Cantrell, president; Mr. Louis Gruenkemeyer, Mr. Dietz Hamilton, Mrs. Mabel James, secretary; Mrs. Charles Roberts, Mr. Nelson Page, Mr. A. J. Sweney, and Mr. B. E. Gum, superintendent. His conference record now stands at thirty-five wins, seven losses, and two ties, including two conference championship - in 1952 and 1956. It will be difficult to find someone who can fill Mr. Thurman's shoes, as he has compiled this outstanding record. As Mr. Thurman leaves to make his home in California, the Salemarion staff wishes him and his family the best of good luck and happiness. MR. Junior Varsity - Future Wildcats Junior Varsity Coaches, Deason and Bliss, although not having a very successful season, have made known the basic fundamentals to the Wildkits. The Wildkits now know that they must put this knowledge to use if they are to become successful Wildcats. Coach Les Deason has a very important job in the Salem foot- ball lineup. His job is to teach the fundamentals to the hopeful JV's so that they will become a successful and a powerful varsity squad. Another important job under- taken by Coach Deason is that of varsity scout. If it weren't for his help, the conquests of the varsity men could not be realized . Coach Sam Bliss also has a twofold duty. As assistant to Coach Deason, he must help pre- pare the Junior Varsity players for the big road ahead. Coach Bliss plays a big role in helping the JV's realize their ambitions of becom- ing varsity men. Also Coach Bliss is a varsity football scout. He works behind the scene in this category. M7 1. Varsity Basketball Coach Walt Kirk led the Wildcats to a fairly successful season this year as the team compiled a record of 11 games won and 13 games lost, including play in the Salem Invitational Tournament and the Centralia Regional. The Wildcat team was composed of four seniors, seven juniors, and two sophomores. Several of the varsity underclassmen saw little action; but when they had the opportunity to play, they gave Salem fans something to look forward to next year. One of the outstanding games of the season was the Wildcats' win over the strong Flora Wolves, who were at the time undefeated in conference play. Salem won this big one over the conference champs, 77-61. The Wildcats defeated Patoka in the first round of the Regional Tournament, 77-59. In the semifinals the Wildcats met the undefeated Hornets from Kinmundy. The Salem Wildcats lost this hard fought battle, decided at the free throw line, by a score of 57-54. Junior Varsity Basketball Coach Mark Johnson's team had a very successful year, as they ended the season with a 16-4 record. This won-lost mark sets a new record for the Junior Varsity of Salem Com- munity High School. This is a very good indication that the varsity for next year will have a contending team for the conference flag. Many of these boys gained valuable experience playing in a few varsity games as well as on the Junior Varsity. SALEM OPPONENTS 62 Greenville 40 47 Mt. They also walked away with all trophies presented at this meet. Senior Jerry Swalley broke the conference record in the high jump with a leap of 5'11 , which bettered the old mark of 5'10 . The squad, although not participating in many dual meets, was kept busy practically every Saturday, as they traveled to several important meets. The Salem squad had two members who qualified for the state track meet: Senior, 126 Jerry Swalley - high jump; Junior, Jerry Hughes - 220.
