Rfrlzcmt' IVUIUIIUI VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE Developing agricultural and civic leaders, as well as teaching' scientific and progressive farming, 15 the ann of this department. lfach student spends a semester under Mr. R. II. XYIIIIZIIIIS. learning farm management. The hoys study farm layout. soil and water management, farm ac- counting, huying and selling, intensive crop produc- tion, credit, government agencies. and farm equipment and servicing, The agriculture classes compete in many annual contests and fairs. The other semester is tleyotetl to farm mechanics, in which the hoys are instructed in farm shop, tools, power equipment, soil and water management, huild- ing and machinery, and electrical repairs hy Nr. Kenneth I'oole. After finishing this course. the hoy should he ahle to estahlish his own farm shop. As a part of their school projects, many of the hoys repair equipment hrought from home. Though it is not a well-known fact, during' the course of the year the instructors yisit the home of each hoy. This hrines ahout a hetter parent-student- teacher relationship. Nr. Poole and Klr. XYiIIiams have tnaster's de- grees from the l'nix'ersity of Illinois. WOODWORKING, METALS, DRAWING, AND VOCATIONAL BUILDING In wootlworlcing, taught hy Klr. ll. -I. I.ance, stu- dents turn out many pieces of heautifttl furniture from mahogany, cedar, and walnut---cedar chests, deslcs, hetls, chests of drawers, and coffee tables. .X welcome new addition to the shop is the newly installed exhaust system. which talces care of the sawdust and lceeps the shop clean. Instruction in metals is given hy Xlr. Islenneth I'ooIe, who also teaches farm mechanics. To provide a hase for careers such as architec- tural engineering, Klr. XY. Il. Matthews teaches mech- anical, advanced, and architectural drawing. Through these courses students attain skill in freehand letter- ing, hlue printing, and isometric drawing. Nlr. Nlat- thews is also in charge of vocational huilding, in which students Qain yaluahle experience hy doing actual construction. This year Nr. Nlatthews and the hoys spent their afternoons in completing a modern four- room house on Ogleshy Street. Mr. Richard Ireland, a student teacher from Ifastern Illinois State College, assisted Klr. Matthews and lXIr. l'.ance in their work during' the first semester. Mr. Matthews has a hachelor's degree from Missouri Teachers College.
