A NEW DAY DAWNS .... The old order changeth, Yielding place to the new. These words of Tennyson truly fit the new Salem of 1939. From a somewhat somnolent, orderly, cultured, quietly beautiful, small city of the Middle West, Salem has been transformed into a teeming scene of activity. Tall, rugged, bronzed men, dressed in the khaki colored uni- form of the oil fields, mill up and down the streets. Strange faces of unfamiliar women throng in and out of our stores. Boys and girls from all sections of the United States help to fill our class- rooms. Unusual accents and voices fill the air, from the soft slurring brogue of the Old South to the drawl of the West. ,Thundering trucks, pounding engines, riveting hammers, mud, smoke, grime, but above all, oil! oil! oil ! These are the qualities that make the new Salem. Money pours ing people pour ing oil pours ing houses spring up, trailers dot the landscape. The oil center of the Middle West! This is the new Salem! Welcome, we say. The more the mer- rier! Page Seven
