F., O the United Nations Qrganization We dedicate this annual. No organization in the history of the human race has been founded with such great purposes to better the lives of the people of the World. We pay tribute to its great leaders, who with the faith of the people and the help of God, will in a large measure guide the world of the future. Thus We, professing a passionate belief in freedom and peace for all people, dedicate this volume to the organization that is doing and will continue to do so much toward making the World a better place in which to live. I May this serve as a reminder of a great year in which a great vision became a reality. edication 3 tiiQ.i.562

lTl-l the declaration of World War ll, the peace-loving nations of the world united behind a common purpose. That purpose was to put down the aggressor nations. As the efforts of man to destroy his fellows advanced into a warfare more savage and horrible than anything the civilized world has before imagined, the need became evident for a system that would not enable any country to propose another such conflict. Men began to realize that the use of force to obtain their desires would not preserve a state of peace. It was agreed, how- ever, that there must be an alternative to the use of force. Force would have to be controlled and not abandoned. Thus the world saw the long, earnest efforts of a few peace-loving, men bear fruit-the United Nations Organization. The Atlantic Charter became its first accepted program. The beliefs stated in this charter are stirring. They gave hope and fighting spirit to the war-ravaged nations. This Charter proposed a better social order in which the individual and his desires and needs are taken into consideration, the preservation of human rights, freedom from fear, want, and freedom of religion and of information. With these principles shining before them these countries were able to survive every indignity and degradation. Later, the recommendations proposed at Dumbarton Oaks for a General International Organization were as follows: to maintain international peace and securityg to develop friendly relations among nations, to achieve international cooperation in the solution of international economic and social problems, to afford a center for harmonizing the actions of the nations in reaching these common ends. Thus the United Nations Organization states its general purposes simply and briefly, but the realization of these goals for all men is the greatest task ever undertaken by the civilized world working and planning together. lt must succeed.
