Dr. Harris is turning with a business-like air to her nurse. It's Anne Snyder, nodding approval to her summary cure. The scene changes rapidly this time. I-low familiar the buildings look. What! The lobby of the Robert E. Lee. Nlany richly dressed dowagers are telling the latest scandal in secretive voices and o-ften with malicious grins. The president-none other than Blanche Phillips-silences the group. She is directing their attention to the door, and telling them that the special guests for the meeting are lylr. and Mrs. sl. P. jones, who have been doing missionary work in Finland. IN'Irs. Jones stalks in, pulling her bespectacled little husband behind her. Her face is toward me now-why, it is Doro- thy Heidenreich. How little she has changed by the years. VVinston-Salem is fading away-I see a select little inn on Long Island. The pro- prietor is rushing around to see if everything is all right. It's Nlarguerette Pierce. The door opens and a group of smartly dressed people enter. There's Hortense Carson l She must be quite the fashion. One of the social elite is pushing her around with a triumphant air-I have it, she is the poet of the hour. She has her manuscript in her hand. She's beginning to read to the group. Oh, it would change! Crystals should have vitaphone attached-I'm not so good at reading lips. I-Iere's a gypsy camp. No, it's a circus. There goes a woman with a familiar air. Look at the children fighting to hold her hand. She must be taking the whole orphan asylum to the circus. I-Iow like IVIargaret Johnson, always the same nice and tho-ughtful person. Again the crystal changes. It is growing clear-I see a smart summer ho-me at Bar Harbor. It must be time for tea. There sits-Why, of all people -Peggy Betts, at the tea table. She seems to be one of the most brilliant hostesses at the resort. I see another stage. Two people are seated at pianos, pounding at the keys with grim determination. They look tired. Why, it's La Rue Gibson and Elizabeth Pfaff. They are playing in a maratho-n. The blank begins to take form. I see palms and tropical plants. VVe've come nearer the gubernatorial mansion of Florida. Here comes a bunch of girls Wearing Salem arm-bands. There is Bus Favor at the door receiving them. Can it be-why, she's the governor-and there's Lucy Lanier. She's evidently heading the party. Since re- ceiving degrees from Hollins and VVellesley she has succeeded lNIiss Stipe as Dean of VVomen of Salem College.
