Sailmakers, coxswains, deck seaman and bosuns perform duties in the old fashion way that are still applicable in today's Navy. Deck Department aboard SAIPAN consists of two divisions with approximately 30 men each. Rated boatswain's mates and deck seamen of lst Division are responsible for the preservation ofthe ship's sides, maintenance and operation of the ship's small boats and the underway replenishment refueling rig. Anchoring and mooring of the ship from the ship's foc'sle is also one of their responsibilities.
