3? LT COSTELLO SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY ON SAIPAN! When safety awareness is high, so is our operational readiness. It is the Safety Department's responsibility to ensure that all of the Navy's Occupational Safety and Health Programs are up speed on Saipan. When the crew follows these programs, including the use of personal protective equipment. proper handling of hazardous chemicals and the electrical safety program, the ship is a very safe and healthy place to work. Safety is an all hands effort and throughout the cruise the crew pitched in to improve the ship's safety climate. The bottom line of an effective safety program is to correct hazards before they cause equipment damage or injury, and Saipan's hazard abatement program is superb. Unfortunately, sometimes a hazard will evade us and a mishap occurs. It is the Safety Department's job to investigate these mishaps to ascertain the cause and by learning from gm- mistakes take corrective action to prevent reoccurence. Closely tied to Safety is the 3M system. The men of SM make sure that all maintenance discrepancies are followed through to repair. A well maintained ship is a safe ship and Saipan is Safe! The men of the Safety Office are proud to do their jobs, they know they are saving equipment and lives. An off shoot of the Safety Department is Morale, Welfare and Recreation. LT Costello and his band of MWR Bubbas ensure that the morale of the crew stays high. While we were in the Mediterranean Ocean, the MWR guys provided tours to such exciting places as Rome, Monte Carlo and Paris.
