he Deck Department is comprised of eighty four Officers and Enlisted men divided into two divisions. They are af- fectionately known by their shipmates as Deck Apes. Decks responsibililties are many and varied. The primary mission of SAIPAN is to land Marines and assets at an assigned objective via aircraft and or small boat. The Dec Department is responsible for the second half of this mission. The First Division is responsible for ships ground tackle and anchoring, forward mooring lines, ships motor lifeboats, and boat davits. The Second Division is responsible for launch and recovery of landing craft from the well deck, ac- comadation ladders, boat and aircraft crane, and the after mooring lines. The department works together during many evolutions. SAIPAN conducted eight refuelings and four logestic replenishments alongside. Deck Department was responsible for the operation of these replenishment rigs. Condition 1 Alfa was conducted over 50 times with thousands of man-hours dedicated to the launch and recovery of small boats. Maintaining the smart appearance of SAIPAN is a monumental task. Deck Deparment painted out 188.000 square feet of ships si es on three occasions. The Boatswain Mate rating is the oldest and proudest rate in the Naval Service. Pride runs deep in this department and each Sailor strives to uphold the traditions and heritage of the Boatswain Mate rating. . i From the Bosn's call to reveille and taps the Deck Department Deck Apes were always there doing their part fulfill- ing SAlPAN's motto We Do It All.
