AlPAN's Air Department started the cruise with high intensity fli ht ops and generally operated in that mode for the duration of the cruise. We made over 3,800 aircraft moves, 9,080 plus launchesfrecoveries, and pumped approx- imately 700,000 gallons of JP-5. We fought the winds, the rain, and even the snow and ice. Through it all, we proved ourselves flexible and professionally responsive to all taskings. When tragedy struck early in the cruise with the CH-46 crash on the deck, all hands immediately responded. Fire was extinguished, aircraft moved, and the deck prepared for other aircraft to land in the shortest possible time. A rapid pro- fessional response was needed, and it was delivered. ln keeping with SAIPAN's motto of We Do It All, Air Department operated with five different types of USMC helicopters, three different types of other US helicopters, AV-8B's and OV-10 aircraft, and helicopters from four allied nations. We worked hard, and are proud to have been on a winning SAIPAN team. AB'S FOREVER. ff LCDR A. Fleisinger LCDR Benkert Lt. W. Vaughan Asst. Air V-0 V QI 'v- IS Lt. W. H. Hall Ill LTJG Fl.
