he 22d Marine Am2phibious Unit lMAUl was activated Dec, 15, 1982 as a result ol the redesignation ol the lormer 32d MAU. The 22d MAU, and its sister unit, the 4th MAU, serve on a rotating, basis as the landing lorce of the United States Sixth Fleet for operations in the Mediterranean area. While deployed with Mediterranean Amp ibious Ready Group 1-83 from February to May 1983. 22d MAU was ordered ashore to serve as the U.S. contingent of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force, Lebanon. ln addition to its presence mission, the 22d MAU conducted several lg? rations following the tragic bombing of the U.S. Embassyin Beirut on April 18, 1983. The 22d MAU returned to Camp Leieune, N.C., on June . 323, after completing a short training exercise in Key West, lorida. On Oct. 18, 1983 the 22d MAU again embarked for Beirut, Lebanon, this time as Landing Force Sixth Fleet 1-84, Several days alter embarkation, the Mediterranean Amphibious Ready Group abruptly changed course, destined for a rendezvous with history on the tropical island of Grenada. After several days of fighting, the victorious Marines reembarked and again sailed eastward. Upon arrival in Lebanon, Brigadier General Jim R. Joy as- sumed command. 4 g W The Marines commenced a determined effort to improve security arrangements in response to an increased threat while supporting ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts. Despite numerous hostile engagements, these missions were executed with proficiency and professionalism. In late February, 1984 the Marines redeploye , except for a detachment left to provide embassgdsecunty, to Navy shipping oft the coast of Lebanon. The 22nd MAU was relieved as Landing Force Sixth Fleet on May 1, 1984 On July 26, 19 the MAU deployed as Landing Force Sixth Fleet and returned to the United States on February 19, 1985: then redeployed on July 3, 1985 and returned December 19, 1985.
