K 'iw Lab Marines Pay Tribute to Belleciu Wood Dead BELLEAU, France - Five Marines from the 2d Battalion, 6th Marine Regi- ment, paid a visit to the battlefield where their World War I counterparts played a decisive part in taking the hilltop known as Belleau Wood from the Germans. Led by Lt. Col. R.E. Tschan, the Marines presented the mayor of Belleau a Marine Corps plaque to be placed in the Communal House as a symbol of the battle and libera- tion ofthe town 64 years ago. They later laid a wreath on the battlefield, paying tribute to the Marines who died there dur- ing the battle. In 1918, as the Germans were ready lo take Paris, French and .-Xmerican troops. including the ith Marine Brigade, which included the 5th and tith Nlarine Regiments. formed a line northeast of the city in Aisiie- Marne to stop the aclvaoce of German forces. The brigade won three lfrench citations for gallantry, entitling them to vtear the French Fourragere, an avtard that is still worn by the 3th and 6th Regiments, .-Xccompanying Tschan were Capts. C.K. Cureio, D..-X. Tedder, R.l,. Wolf and R.F. Douglas. .-'ts the five officers prepared to leave the area, .lim Neill, overseer of the American Ceinetery at Belleau Wood, presented them with a LYS. flag that had flown at the ceme- tery at the beginning of World War II. 'A local farmer, realizing the Germans were about to take the area again, pulled the flag down and hid it for safekeeping. Neill was recently given the flag and presented it in turn to the visiting Marines. - ' l - '177
