2D BATTAU0N 6TH MARINES The Second Battalion Sixth Marines were activated on,7.1f1.,JulyQ19 17 at Quantico, Va. The Battalion deployed during January and February 1 918'tof3FranceQand was assigned to the 4th Brigade of the American Expeditionary Force. 1Thet1campaigns in whiah the Battalion participatedarett, Alsne, AisneMarno,t Saint Mihiel,.Meuseg'Argonne, Toulan-Tryon, Chateau Thierry and Marabache Limey. Private John Joseph KELLY .7otQthei ,78th Company, Second Battalion received the Medal of Honor for his actionon 3 Oct'11918,Tdu ring the MeuseArgonne Operations. Corporal John Henry PRUITT also won a Medal of-,Hfonor on this same day. Gunnery Fred W. STOCKMAN was the third Battalion Marineto winning Medal Qof Honor during the World War l Campaigns. 5 A 3 A H i The Battalion later occupied the Rhineland frorn1Dec 1918 1919 and returned to Quantlco for deactivation on 20 Aug 1919. y ,J The Battalion was reactivated in San Diego, Ca. on 1 Dec '1934.c Again the Battalion was deployed in August and September 1937 to-Shanghai, China and1assignedtofSecond Marine Brigade. The Second Marine Brigade was redesignated on 1 Feb 1941 as the 2d Marine Division. The 2d Battalion, 6th Marines deployed during May to July 1941 to Reykjavik, Iceland and reassigned to The 1st Provisional Marine Brigadeand returned. during ?March 1942 to San Diego. The Battalion was reassigned to the 2d,Marine Divisionand then deployed to Wellington, New Zealand during Oct 1942. A ln World War ll the Battalion participated in The following campaigns: The capture and defense of Guadalcanal Jan-Feb 19433 the consolidation or Southern Solomons, Feb 1943: the Gilbert Islands Operation NovDec 19433 the capture and occupation of Saipan June-July 19443 the capture and occupation ot Tinian, July-Augustq19443 the assault and occupation of Okinawa, April 1945. The Battalion participated in theoccupation of Japan and was relocated to Camp Pendleton, Ca. and deactivated on 1 October 1947. The 2d Battalion, oth Marines was reaafivated 26 August 1950 and Ossigned to 2d Marine Division at compiejeune, N.C. Since 1950 the Battalion has deployed asa! Battalion Landing Team several times in the Carribean and Mediterranean and is still Pon a rotating basis. Second Battalion has participated in the Beirut, Lebanon landing in 1958 and the Cuban Mlsslle Crisis during October to December 1962. As of 1 January 1982, the Second Battalion, 6th Marines has been on an activated status for 67 years since its activation in 1917. l l
