Built on a white rock that juts . . . . .I h' h ' the center of the city the Acropolis contains the ruins of many temples bult up ng in to honor every major god and goddess of ancient Greek Mythology. Evidence of construction on the Acropolis goes back to 2800 B.C. However, the ruins that now grace . . . . f h h' h' t ' site were built during the zenith of Greek culture and power in the ourt t is is oric century B.C. When Alexander the Great was conquering all the known world for Greece, the Acropolis looked much like the restored picture above. The most prominent and famous building on the Acropolis is the Parthenon. This architectural masterpiece was dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and patroness of the city bearing her name. This temple was built with sacred rooms and a huge golden statue of Athena in its center. People came from far away to worship and bring gifts here. Through history Greece was conquered and liberated many times. And the Acropolis has been used at the discretion of the conquering army. The Romans made the temples into christian churches in the fourth century A.D. The Turks added minarets to the Parthenon and made it into a mosque in 1458. Many times the high hill overlooking the city was . . h f t And each time it was used there was more damage to the istoric used as a or ress. buildin s there. Twice during Turkish occupation, gunpowder stored in the Parthenon S exploded laying that building to ruins.
