There, Saipan sailors and marines were treated to a totally different cultural experience. New flavorful foods, colorful costumes, ancient history and tours into the past were the standard fare. The straw market in the old district at the base of the Acropolis sold gold and fur at good prices to the bargaining sailor. The ship sponsored tours took us all over Athens, the Acropolis, and even out to Delphi. The Tavernas served us Moussaka, stuffed grape leaves, Baklava, Retsina wine, and the deadly ouzo. The sounds of Greek guitars filled the air, and exotic dancers preformed on stage. We broke our plates on the floor. We had lots of fun. Athens Greece, with all her charm, opened her arms and treated Saipan to thirteen days of great liberty.
AT H015 kg an-u-ag,-N ,,....- -, Athens showed us a wonderful time. From the Acropolus to the straw market in Plaka, there was something for everyone. We called home from Omnia square, we did our laundry at the air force base. We never learned the alphabet but we took the cheap taxis all over town.
