- f The seas were rough in Naples. Too rough at many times for the liberty boats to operate. But when they did go, Saipan had the opportunity to visit the shores of Italia. Tours subsidized by the ship gave every- one on board a chance to see the sights of ancient Rome and modern Italy. Tour groups saw Vatican City, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and marvelled at the sights of St. Peters Square. Tours visited nearby Pompeii, the ancient vacation spot of high ranking Roman officialdom. It was there that the tired Senator, the overworked general, and the numerous func- tionaries ofthe Roman empire came to relax and forget about world conquests. In AD. 79, Mt. Vesuvius suddenly errupted and covered Pompeii and I-Ierculaneum under twentfv five feet of volcanic ash and --'fs A:.'r- Q- ' - .. . - m,.-4 ..-.M .ui ,Win T 'Q ' L . . '::. Igi.::Z ,L -. J...-n -1 W, ,, lava. For centuries, both cities lay hidden until excavations in the ninetenth century revealed them perfectlv preserved. Today it gives us a snapshot of ancient Rome life. Ancient houses are intact, often with the residents still inside. Road blocks are still up to keep the Chariots out of the ancient market places.
