t .. W Eire Ha . Pm. 6 Hou RT mir To His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, Vicar of Christ on earth, successor of St. Peter, guiding light of the universal Church, the 1957 Senior Class of Saint Ursula Academy respectfully dedicates its yearbook, the Scroll. Rome and Toledo, the Vatican and Saint Ursula's do not lie far apart. There is a bond -spiritual, moral, intellectual-which unites both, and that bond is personified in the Holy Father. With his vast knowledge of today's prob- lems, the Pope has become a beacon to guide men toward truth. From industrialists and bankers to garmentmakers and streetcar conductors, his teaching leads them through their professions to Christ. Oppressed peoples of Europe and Asia see in the Holy Father the true hope for peace. His pleas to prevent World War II, his en- couragement of the United Nations, his Warn- ings to authority - from employers to dic- tators - exemplify the motto of his reign: Peace, the Work of justice. Yet the quality that makes Pope Pius XII so beloved is his personal holiness. Deeply devoted to the Mother of God, he has pro- claimed the glory of her Assumptiong his universal charity illuminates his reality as another Christ. Thou art Peter .... May the Holy Spirit lead all men to this Rock which is His Church.

McCartin guides and instructs the juniors and seniors of Saint Ursula Academy in religion. His impressive knowledge of philosophy and theology provides a deeper interest in the course and contributes to a greater love of God and His creations. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Father McCartin attended Canisius College in Buffalo before entering the novitiate at Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Father stud- ied philosophy and theology at New- burgh, New York, and Washington, D.C. After his ordination at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in 1938, Father preached retreats, novenas, and Forty Hours' Devotions from- Iowa to the Atlantic seaboard. Father McCartin came to Toledo in 1947-48 and again in 1953 to encourage memberships in the Propagation of the Faith Society. Fortunately, these assign- ments have included teaching at SUA. Students and alumnae experience Father McCartin's interest in their suc- cess as Christian women. They know that they can rely upon his advice and gas he is their advocate at the altar of o .
