r'f M- - W -M--M -,W ,..ll,. n.w,.,s .H The Coat-of-Arms of the Toledo Ursulines is interesting for its symbolisml The original was granted to the Ursulines of Paris of the monastery of St. Jacques in 1607 by Henry IV, King of France. The left side of the shield, which is azure or sky blue, speaks of heafven, justice, loyalty, and beauty. The initials of Jesus QIHSD and Mary CMJ blended between a cross and three Passion Nails, are -surrounded by a gold halo of glory. A double star of four points is abofve the halos The foremost star. represents the four 'vows of the Ursuline Nuns: Poverty, Chastity, Obedience, and Instruction of Youth. The' star behind this repre- sents the life of contemplation which supports the actifvelife ofthe Ursulines.-In Historically, the fleurs-de-lys recall the first raising of an Ursuline house to a monastery, which occurred at Paris and the fact that Henry IV yranted it the fleurs-de-lys of the royal ar1ns. They indicate the spiritual and wholly -virginal matern- ity 0f St. Angela and her 'daughters regarding souls. V U ' h 1 The right side ofthe shield is silver symbolizing light, life, innocence, fvirginity, faith, and joy. The green, sturdy laurel tree speaks of hope, -victory, and immortality. i'Ursula Lazarus is the ancient badge of the order of St. Ursula who won her laurel of immortality in martyrdom. The cross symbolizes undying faith,' the arrow points to heafven, directing the intentions heapen-ward. The I'Ioly Spirit is hovering abofve the vigorously growing tree and co-vers it with His shadow. The tower and fbuckeye belong to the Toledo house particularly. The tower symbolizes Toledo, Spain, for whichVToledo, Ohio, is named, and the huckeye is for the State of Uhio. The celestial crown and star represents the eternal reward, for those who instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity. . k R ' , The Ursuline' motto, Soli Deo Gloria l Glory to God ,.4lone j is emblazened across the top. In this one succinct statement we find the resume of the work ofASt. Angela and also of the life and work of the Ursuline Nuns. - Q -
