The left side of the shield, which is azure or sky blue, speaks of heafven, justice, loyalty, and beauty. The initials of Jesus QIHSD and Mary CMJ blended between a cross and three Passion Nails, are -surrounded by a gold halo of glory. A double star of four points is abofve the halos The foremost star. represents the four 'vows of the Ursuline Nuns: Poverty, Chastity, Obedience, and Instruction of Youth. The' star behind this repre- sents the life of contemplation which supports the actifvelife ofthe Ursulines.-In Historically, the fleurs-de-lys recall the first raising of an Ursuline house to a monastery, which occurred at Paris and the fact that Henry IV yranted it the fleurs-de-lys of the royal ar1ns. They indicate the spiritual and wholly -virginal matern- ity 0f St. Angela and her 'daughters regarding souls. V U ' h 1 The right side ofthe shield is silver symbolizing light, life, innocence, fvirginity, faith, and joy. The green, sturdy laurel tree speaks of hope, -victory, and immortality. i'Ursula Lazarus is the ancient badge of the order of St. Ursula who won her laurel of immortality in martyrdom. The cross symbolizes undying faith,' the arrow points to heafven, directing the intentions heapen-ward. The I'Ioly Spirit is hovering abofve the vigorously growing tree and co-vers it with His shadow. The tower and fbuckeye belong to the Toledo house particularly. The tower symbolizes Toledo, Spain, for whichVToledo, Ohio, is named, and the huckeye is for the State of Uhio. The celestial crown and star represents the eternal reward, for those who instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity. . k R ' , The Ursuline' motto, Soli Deo Gloria l Glory to God ,.4lone j is emblazened across the top. In this one succinct statement we find the resume of the work ofASt. Angela and also of the life and work of the Ursuline Nuns. - Q - Presenting . . Ser FROM GOD T0 MAN 2 . and for the F uture . . . the Ursuline girl looks toward the plans that will continue the heritage and broaden the scope of Ursuline influence. To facilitate this work of education the Ursulines began a building program in May, 1953. Plans have been made to com- plete the present campus on Collingwood Boulevard and also to construct a new academy building on Kenwood Boulevard. The success of the Ursulines in Toledo for the past one hundred years has been proved by the unselflsh co-operation of the citizens in this project. 4 Our Bishop During the four years of his residence in our diocese, Bishop Rehring has be- come a familiar and loved figure in our lives. We of St. Ursula Academy especially have benefited from his re- assuring presence at our religious cere- monies as well as his inspiring sermons. Toledoans have come to recognize his gentle manner and the frequeiit walks which typify his daily routine. Even small children feel at ease with him and look forward to meeting this friendly apostle of Christ. The Bishop was ordained in 1914, served a professorship at lX'Iount St. lwary Seminary in Cincinnati, and came to Toledo in 1950 to become our fourth Bishop. Outstanding among Bishop Rehring's ecclesiastical efforts is the support which he has so generously given to the current Ursuline Development Program. His enthusiastic promotion of this drive will long be remembered in the hearts of the students and faculty. How fortunate we are to have such a zealous leader to guide the people through these uncertain times! Most Reverend George J. Rehrlng Bishop of Toledo Um' hoploin Reverend Francis P. MeCartin, O.M.I. This year we again welcome Father Francis P. lXlcCartin as our chaplain. After six years of ab- sence he has returned to St. Ursula Academy com- plete With that famous Eastern accent. Father has presided over the various spiritual ceremonies as well as attended social activities. The juniors and seniors are well prepared to face life in the adult World as the result of his extensive teaching. Father McCartin has the gift of making his classes interesting, and at the same time of leaving valuable impressions on students, minds. For personifying all that Christ teaches, Father deserves the everlasting gratitude of this student body. 5 Dedication.. to the Ursuline Nuns In honor of their one hundred years in Toledo, Ohio, We, the Senior Class, dedicate the 1954 SCROLL to the Ursuline Nuns of the Convent of the Sacred Heart. For their consistent effort to educate young girls for Christian Womanhood, We Wish to express our sincere appreciation. In the course of their teaching years in our city the nuns have succeeded in living the nine counsels of Saint Angela Merici, foundress of the Order of Saint Ursula: Humble yourself, and you will be exalted. Use discretion and kindness in the treatment of your Daughters. Be submissive and obedient to your Superiors. Be sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of your Daughters and never despair of God's constancy. Guide and inspire your Daughters and Sistersg counsel them to seek the things that are above. Set blameless examples that they may model themselves after you. Shield your flock from the bad influence of worldly people and heretics. Take all your Daughters to your heart and bear with them all equally. ' Live in harmony united all with one heart and one will. May the strength and true comfort of the Holy Spirit be in you all, so that you may be able to uphold and to carry on manfully and faith- fully the enterprise which you have undertaken and that you may look forward to the great reward which God has prepared for you. Ah Sister M. Lelia Directress The Faculty The formation of a complete Christian personality is the objec- tive of education by Saint Ursula's faculty. Such important points as Christian piety and becoming man- ners are Well emphasized in this pro- gram. Because of their own educa- tions, the faculty are well prepared to fulfill their purpose, and in the persons of the instructors many colleges and universities are repre- sented. Saint Ursula Academy strives to mold the Christian personality in every Way. A liberal academic cur- riculum is offered, thus contributing both practical and cultural features in at basic education. Through these studies and extra-curricular activi- ties the Ursuline girl receives an in- tegrated development in her rela- tionship with God, man, and the universe. Sister M Alice Sister M. Seventy- two girls, eagerly looking forward to their third year in high school, returned to SUA. As upperclassmen, school life took on va new look for them. A class meeting was held in October. At this meeting, the class, under the able direction of the officers and the home room teachers, planned all the activities for the year. In February, they presented to the student body an amusing assembly, l'SnoW White and the Seven Dwarfsf' The future journalists produced the junior issue of the lTRSUI.INE. The class energetically sold tickets for the senior class play. In March the juniors received their class rings, an event which made them feel like true upperclassmen. Tradition-Wise, the class planned the Junior-Senior Prom for April 19. It was a marvelous success and the evening found many girls and their escorts dancing to the music of Jimmy Lenls orchestra. The class sponsored a lylission Day, lylay 12. The day was dedicated to both the spiritual and social aspect of the missions. Culminating their year, the girls sang at the graduation exercises. . . :,. These sophisticated sophomoresi' arrived with the realization that they would get out of school only what they put into it and with the de- termination to make this year more profitable and enjoyable for all. On initiation day the sophomores proudly reigned over the Freshies. Their subjects were seen buzzing about the school obediently waiting on their merciless mistresscs. As always the freshmen displayed a fine spirit of sports- manship. On October 21, the feast of St. Ursula, the sophomores were hostesses at the traditional breakfast in our newly modernized Urban Hall. Youth XVith Faithi' Was the theme carried out. The sophomore history classes presented a very delightful assembly for the entire student body. It was a musical comedy with educational features. The sophomores have done especially well in the tax stamp drive, the mission projects, and the Catholic Chronicle drive. ln lylarch, which is vocation month, the sophomores presented a pro- gram, dealing with the choice of a religious vocation. E K ms. :z c: May Crowning E r 4 4 4 3' The virtues of lblary Immaculate are reflected especially during her month of May. Appropriately this time was Chosen to pay homage to our hlother through the Ceremonies of the traditional Nlay Crowning. The entire student body participated in the ceremonies. During these ceremonies the illay Queen, Rose lllary Clribbin, and her attendants, Diane Naumann and llary bleflahey, led a procession over the campus. At this time the Litany of the Blessed Virgin was chanted. The Klay Queen placed the floral crown upon the head of the statue of the Blessed Ilvlother of God, signifying that lllary, as Queen, reigns supreme in our hearts. On this May 28, the student body was again able to pay tribute to Nlary during the Klarian Year. 61 l Left to right: L. Hoilman, I. Miehaelson, Father O'Brien, E. Onody, J. Tiell Retreats The Reverend -lohn Ollirien, Sal., conducted the school retreats this year. Because of an increased enrollment of the student body, two separate retreats were given, the senior retreat in ,liebruary and the school retreat in lhlarch. Fatherls great devotion to the Sacred Heart influenced his choice for a retreat theme for both groups. ljach of the three days Was devoted to one of the mem- bers of the Holy Family. His excellent meditation on the Passion was presented in a strik- ingly real light. It provided many ideas for further thought. In all conferences, Father inspired a real love for God rather than a fear of Him. The simplicity with which Father O'Brien talked made a lasting impression on the minds of the students. The Centenary Class breathlessly listened for the long awaited names of the co-editors for the SCROLL. Ellyn Finn and Patricia Hurley, Sister lyl. Lelia announced, had been chosen as the co-editors. It was later learned that lylary Butler would be the make-up editor, and for the first time our yearbook would have its own photography editor, Nancy Huss. These four honor students, with the eager help of the section editors and their assistants, worked the next few months with diligence and perserverence. This yearbook has .3 centenary theme, for the present year of nineteen hundred and fifty-four marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Ursuline Nuns' arrival in Toledo. Through the humdrum of pounding typewriters, the drawing of layouts, the planning and cropping of pictures, and general discussion and exchange of ideas until the printer returned our finished prod- uct, the staff tried to carry out this theme. Indeed, the Senior Class is proud of being the Centenary Class of 1954 and hopes its contribution to the long line of yearbooks will be worthy of the fine Ursuline tradition. 68 Co-Editor ..... ....., lr Qllyn Finn ' CO-lfditor .... ,,...,,.. ...... l 7 atricia Hurley 3 Klakc-up lfditor ............ ...Klary liutler l Photography lfclitor ..,. ....., N ancy Huss Helen Keller Section lfditors ........., ..,...
