As you pass from page to page, with your hand in lVIary's you will be reminded that we, in planning this pictorial record of the year,s happenings, were thoroughly convinced that not for one minute could we be separated from Our ill other. Let us tell you why: As our guardian and patroness on this lifelong pilgrim- age, we have chosen Our Blessed Lady to keep clear the path in face of the dangerous attractions which might entice us to change our course. It is especially fitting in these precarious times that the protecting arms of the Mother of God envelope and defend us against the subtly insidious philosophies of life which reach out, threatening to destroy completely the reign of peace and contentment that Christianity brings to the soul who seeks it. In our four years at St. Ursulais, we have been instilled with a sincere devotion to the Virgin Most Pure, as the guardian of young womanhoodg we have been encouraged to look to Mary for example in all our endeavors: spirit- ual, intellectual, and social. W' ith M ary for our Ideal, and the Christian principles we have been taught' here as safeguards, we confhdently face the future as daughters of the Queen of Heaven. MOST REVFRFND KARL I ALTER, DD. 'Um' Bishop The visits made by the Most Reverend Bishop to St. Ursula's are usually limited to one annually-on graduation night when he presents to each senior her diploma, and at the same ceremony, when he awards the cross to the senior attaining the highest average in Christian Doctrine. This year the Bishop honored the school by appearing on our lec- ture platform, sketching for us in interesting detail, his recent tour ot South America. 4 THE scnom. Our Chaplain During the past year, Father Murphy, as Spiritual Director, and Instructor in Christian Doctrine, has played a vital part in the lite of every Ursuline girl. From the regenerating waters of Baptism to the comforting oils of Extreme Unction, Father has endeavored to impress upon us the love Our Divine Loral had for mankind in instituting these Channels of Grace and the obedience of the Church in administering His Sacraments, which serve throughout our lives as our Guides and our Passport to Eternity. l l REVEREND PATRICK MURPHY O M I THE SCROLL R553 'TQ fair? mi? will? First off, the girls chose: four fairy godmothers Cbetter known as class officersi. Their names were Anne Michaelson, president, Carol Suder, vice-president, Barbara Schaedel, secretary, Joan McCarthy, treasurer. In some mystic way, the Junior class rings arrived three months earlier than expected and the fairy godmothers and all their elves were gay as pixies. Then came the call to armsl This cry sent godmothers and fairies alike scurrying to join the ranks of the March of ,Dimes Often from the distant woodland of the auditorium the melodious strains of the orches- tra- and the glee club greet those who lend an ear. Prom! Prom! soon rang through the halls. The fairy godmothers waved their magic wands and soon the Cinderellas were off to the ball. But all too soon the clock struck twelve and the wee folk were back to their books. As all fairies, we too have our work to do-the Junior Essay being a big part of it. Have you ever seen elves frolic? Where? At the Mission Carnival, of course! We stand on our heads, sing till we're hoarse and eat cookies and coke till there's room for no more. 24 , THE SCROLL THE SCROLL Helen Ankenbrandt J Betty Beins Colleen Bracken Dolores Crofoot Mary Ellen Dillon ' Eileen Dooley Joan Ducey Joan Finn Grace Ann Frank Carole Gifford Alyce Glowacki Mary Ann Graham Mary Ann Green Betty Jane Hall Mary L. The director, Margie Morton, and assistant director, Frances Metty, launch the first scene, namely, the breakfast in Urban Hall on St. Ursula's Day. The blue and gold streamers, the tables in symmetrical rows, gaily decorated, the magnificent speakers' table, the long lines of white- uniformed girls, the laughter, applause, and hearty appetites-all testified to a complete and blessed Feast Day. The second scene, under special management of Sue Hartnett and Margaret Hancock, treasurer and secretary, respectively, was the Chapel Ceremony in November, when all students were consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Freshmen enrolled in the Apostleship of Prayer. The Messenger of the Sacred Heart drive opened at this time, an activity which proved bigger and better than in former years. The January scenewas an educational one. Book displays, craft work, art, and sew- ing contributed toward the exhibits which could be viewed in corridors and class-rooms- all dealing with the English novel, Silas Marner, which was studied by the Sophomores during the second scholastic quarter. February's scene kept us mission-minded. A movie The Story of the Vatican, was viewed by the student body after each one had contributed to a fast-moving crew of Sopho- mores, a donation for the 'foreign missions. So motorman Jane Bruss, with the help of ticket col- lector, Carol Warnement had to get out and round up the passengers. As the latter piled in, Ellen Quinn stood eagerly counting noses and the coins being dropped into the box. Once we were on the bus, Mary Anne Coyle called out the stops. The first stop, of course, was the Freshmen initiation. This stop found us in all-together different costumes-too horrible to mention-which the honorable Sophomores made us wear. One thing is certain: you can tell where their thoughts were. Despite our suffering, however, we had to address our persecutors as honorable sophomores. But really we all enjoyed it, because there'S something about a sophomore that makes a freshman like and respect her. At this time we were enrolled in the Student League, and the Apostleship of Prayer. We all piled into the bus lin our regular uniforms by nowl and didn't stop again until we had our annual Christmas party for the Faculty and classmates. After much hurrying and worrying, everything turned out wonderfully well, especially the food. Our next stop was a tea for our mothers. We worked and slaved, planning the food and entertainment. Not the decorating, however, because Mary Manse girls left their beautiful Valentine Dance decorations for us to use. All in all the Mothers' Tea was a gratifying success. Our Mission Project was next on the list. This time, an operetta entitled Bits of the Old South' based on the life of Stephen Foster, went over big in spite of inadequate time to practice. Pre-Freshman Day found us repeating our operetta for over four hundred eighth grade girls from parochial schools. 34 THE SCROLL The Spiritual Council St. Ursulafs Day .... The Seniors sponsored a dance in November, the Sophomores, a movie ot the Vatican in February, and the Freshmen supplied everyone an enjoyable afternoon with the presentation of their operetta, a Stephen Foster idyll. The Juniors climaxed a successful year with an all-school carnival in May. ln the summer of l948 sixteen girls represented St. Ursula's at the CSMC convention held at Notre Dame University. 40 THE SCROLL The Bishop? Lecture .... Eileen Keogh, Joan McNerney, Terrie Gladieux, Bishop Alter, Patricia Brady, Patricia Lynch. During the past year, the Most Reverend Bishop was a guest speaker on the Mary Manse-St. Ursula lecture series. The Bishop sketched in interesting detail the progress of his sojourn in South America. Most of the six weeks' visit was spent in Brazil, the physical scenery of which the Bishop gave a graphic account. The subject-matter of the talk con- cerned the geographical, economic, social, intellectual, and religious life of our good neighbors . ' It was the first time the Most Reverend Bishop appeared before the St. Ursula Academy student body, other than when he presides at the Commencement exercises. The Retreat On February twenty-third, twenty-fourth and twenty'fifth, the girls of St. Ursula's carried the ball in an attempt to strike a closer union with God in the form of a retreat. Father Flick, the captain of the team, outlined the plan of defense in his inspiring lectures. Points were scored by the many graces received from daily Mass and Communion. 'Spare moments were spent in private prayers of thanksgiving and petition and recita- tion of the rosary, paying special tribute to the Blessed Virgin, our patroness in this retreat. It would be impossible for anyone to forget this three-day retreat, climaxed by the inspiring Consecration to Our Blessed Lady. The Seniors especially will keep it stamped on their hearts since it may be the last retreat for many of them. The graces gained and the spiritual knowledge given them by Father Flick will remain with them, guiding them along whatever path of life they may Rev. John Flick, C.SS.R. choose. What a blow to the girls' expense accounts! They gave up their fantastic ideas and settled down to being real women. The story was that of St. Bernadette of Lourdes, a simple peasant girl who had a vision of our Lady at a grotto in the woods. But alas, no one believed the poor child, her mother, sisters, and friends thought she was dreaming. The story travels and reaches a blind daughter of a wealthy woman who has lost her faith. The blind girl had heard of many handicaps overcome by visiting the grotto at Lourdes and touching the water in the nearby stream. The girl visits the grotto, prays not only that her sight be restored, but also that as a consequence, her mother's faith be restored, which all comes to pass. 54 THE SCROLL 'Q J 'B 1 Y... ., ww '33 'R xx. ,q Y' M, 2 N X, ,L 'F uw? 253 'Q' 'Q A b ,.A ,. hQ .fa 53 Wfwfq i 't fx K ,.,.,., ,.,.,,: fi 'K WNY ..., -AJ. n:,.:rfE'T. ,LL , ,,x , , , 3 LETS if L v gym mfsiz 254.-1: ,ig www A A 1 1 l ' J Qkm img. . This season the activity in the athletic tield took a leap to wider horizons. The gym classes, compulsory tor the freshmen and sophomores only, were not deserted, however, by the upperclassmen. Basketball is the most popular sport on the campus. The whole school turns out tor tryouts in the tournament held in the spring. The stars of each class put their best toot forward to seek that ever-satisfying title of Champion . Bowling attracts many. Exclusive of a few sore thumbs and a disagreement or two, as to who will set up the pins, this sport is enjoyed by the experts. Table tennis, the pro's and con's ot which are being discussed by the champions above, appeals to a few stars. Ursuline girls heeded the plea ot alumna, Mrs. Helen Campbell, in her Let- ters-to-l-lollywood crusade for the purpose of stimulating movie producers in filming the Lite of Christ. Numerous letters written by the girls were sent to Hollywood and answers were received from several ot the studios, prom- 66 ising to give the matter consideration. The auditorium was very busy every day from ten to ten forty-tive, when Father Murphy held his religion court. Seniors and Juniors received instruction on Tues- day and Thursday and the underclassmen, on Wednesday and Friday. Classes held in the homeroom on alternating days sup- plemented the course. THE SCROLL English .... English, which is a required course, is an integrated program consisting ot the study and application ot the rules ot gram- mar, exercise in written and oral expres- sion, and English and American literature. Journalism is taught for six weeks in the senior English classes. Classes in dramat- ics are elective. The course of study tor each year in- cludes the reading ot at least one full- length drama, a classical novel, essay and biographical selections, and narrative and Suzanne Anton, Justine Hill, Chris- tine Reclrup, Mary Ann Jarzynski. After a step-by-step instruction into the methods at research, the Juniors are required to write an essay on any subject ot their choice. One of the first requi- sites for intelligent Amer- ican citizenship is a knowledge of the laws and principles of the most authentic documents: the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independ- ence. After a thorough study of these tenets of our political faith, the American History classes made the booklets which the girls in the picture are examining. Students of these classes also placed en- tries in the several essay contests conducted by various local organiza- tions. Projects such as this bring the Ancient History classes up to date. Here the girls are examining dolls which one member of the class received di- rectly from the Cradle of Culture, G r e e c e and Ro m e. The dolls are d r e s s e d in costumes peculiar to the respective provinces fr o m which they came. ln the Modern History classes much attention was given to study of the arts of the Renaissance Period. Papers were writ- ten on the lives and works of the maste r painters and replicas of their paintings exhibited. Besides the f a c t u al knowledge thus gained, the student learns to ap- preciate the heritage be- queathed society by these g r e a t benefactors to modern culture. Citizenship As the preface to the textbook states: ' The pur pose of the course is to assist young people in gain- ing a wider knowledge of themselves and the oc- cupational and economic life of their communities in order that they may be able to choose their vo- cations wisely and in keeping with Christian prin- ciples. Economics .... The study of Economics should constitute a vital factor in the education of youth. Its primary purpose is to train future citizens to live in society as active and progressive mem- bers. Through it one learns to participate fully in matters all citizens are certain to meet. Through a special study of the great Encyclicols, the student learns to think clearly concern- ing the American way of life in its many aspects: political, social, economic, cultural, and religious. Maier, Corrine Hoffman, Mary Lu Lutz converse in Latin. The study of Latin is very interesting as well as educational. Besides learning to translate sentences the student reads the works of Caesar, Cicero, and Virgil. There is such a close relation between English and Latin vocabulary that all classes enrolled, at one time or another, step on familiar ground. Grammar and vocabulary study constitute the bulk of the beginner's course. This is a necessary preparation for the study of the Latin 70 Joanne Saxer, Joan Finn, Bar- bara Neidharclt, Joyce Hurley, Dorothy Liebherr. classics which will follow in the third and fourth years. Because there are so few girls brave enough to study Spanish and French, the classes are enjoyed all the more, since each girl receives more individual attention, which is always beneficial in a language. The course includes an intensive study not only of the principles of grammar and translation, but also the history, dress, and customs of Spanish senoritas and French mademoiselles. No, it is a theorem which the Soph- omores geometry classes are trying to prove. Day by day, with plodding persever- ance, the girls logically seek their way through the complicated maze of circles, triangles, and quadrilaterals which lead to advanced mathematics. Those who take their math seriously find satisfaction in the advanced classes in which intermediate algebra and solid geometry supply the necessary mental dis- cipline tor the prospective math major with college ambitions. X equals what? Who can solve this problem? The Freshmen, at course. They start their first year introduction to math with a course in algebra. The many ben- etits to be derived from the study ot alge- bra are tor the most part obvious, but chief among them is the exercise in logical reasoning. The art classes have completed a very successful year. The Freshmen studied the fundamental elements of art and proceeded into the phases of still lite with chalk and char- coal. The Sophomores went in for free-brush design and water colorg while the Juniors specialized in figure-drawing and heads. To prepare the Seniors who plan art as a career, Miss Leona Pauken, instructor, gave special attention to the problems of commercial art which arise in the business world. The activities ot the year included periodical exhibits and a spring assembly, the prin- cipal feature of which was Cinderella , a puppet show. During class play time the services ot the school's artists were enlisted in the making ot posters and the painting of scenery. 74 THE SCROLL Commercial Our future office workers have attained a high degree of accuracy neatness and sense of organization from their filing project No need for some lucky office manager to lose his good disposition when these girls are at work Special preparation is the keynote to success. Mary's t i n a I goal was achieved after two years ot enthusiastic participation in the music theory class, under the direction of Sister M. Francis. These classes helped the young musician to under- stand and appreciate the tech- nique and beauty of the great musical masterpieces. At frequent intervals during the year each girl entertained the group by a performance on her instrument ot specialized study. Themes dealing with subjects ot a biographical and critical nature were written after the study of the respective composers. St. Ursula Academy for many years has been most active in the Junior Red Cross Or- ganization, in which the entire student body is enrolled. Besides the formal membership, the girls participated in the various projects sponsored by the Association. At Christmas, each class prepared boxes for the little ones of Europe and other war-ravaged countries.
