As underclassmen playing our role, Behind the scenes, toward the final goal. Then under the tussel at long last A part of St. Ursula's Senior Class, Under the cross, which guided our way, We learned, we worshipped, we lived each day. Under the stars are memories gay: Our dances, our clubs-of course, the play, And under the bell in studious masses We hurried each day to go to our classes. Then under contract we wove into one Our God, our studies, our friends, our fun. And now each memory, though a page in a book Can long be relived with merely a look- A precious gem that will always be treasured, Although its true value can never be measured. The Most Reverend Karl J. Alter D.D. Bishop of Toledo I A native Toledoan, Our Most Reverend Bishop has served the Toledo diocese as its Chief Shepherd for sixteen years. Most notable among his achievements are his praiseworthy efforts in establishing a diocesan weekly, and the completion of the Cathedral of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Nationally, His Excellency has received enviable recognition for his interest and leadership in educational and social welfare. The Bishop's annual visit to St. Ursula's is an auspicious occasion, when on Commencement night he presents to each senior the seal of eli- gibility to join the ranks of the seventy-six year old St. Ursula Alumnae Association. lt is also at this time that the Bishop presents to the senior achieving the highest average in Christian Doctrine, the award of awards- the Bishop's Cross, THE SCROLL W it K . . dedication . . . j ...,,,. ,.,T,.l Reverend Francis P. McCartin, O.M.l. To our instructor in Christian Doctrine, to whom we are indebted for a greater appreciation of our holy religion and a zeal for the cultivation in us of a strong Christian character, we, the Class of l948, gratefully dedicate this yearbook. Throughout the past year, Father McCartin, himself the oldest of thirteen children, has ever sought to impress us withthe importance of the Christian bulwarks of the home and the family, and the realization of our responsibility as future wives and mothers in preserving them. He has imparted to us a true love of our holy faith and a greater desire for eminent service. ln the various and far-flung travel zones of the future, we shall recall with gratitude the benefits derived from the religion class of i947-48, the passwords of which were: Personal sanctification is the keynote of the spiritual life, if you play square with God, He will play square with you. The kick-off opening game scored a touchdown in the form of an assembly for the Sacred Heart Messenger drive for subscriptions. Previously, the team had elected Shirley Rominski, captain, Connie Dobbs, co-captain, Catherine Fitzgerald, coach, and Joanne Rerucha, manager. During the time-out period following the second quarter, the team entertained their patrons, the faculty, with a very successful Christmas party, entertainment for which was furnished by Jeanne Garvin, Audrey Haddad, Shirley Gorham, Sue Hartnett, Margot Boaden, Joan Kaszynslci, Margaret McGreevy, and Darlene Mikol. Relieved of the back-to-work strain of the mid-year exams, the team greeted the third quarter with renewed energy. Shirley Gorham became top man in this quarter with her success in the annual Catholic Chronicle Bowl. But these energetic freshmen were not finished. Another touchdown was successfully completed when they scored in the tax stamp drive, receiving their extra point by giving a tax stamp party for the entire St. Ursula team. After a successful land- ing, armed with elevator permits for unsuspecting freshmen, the sophomores established beacheads in Rooms ll7 and ll9. Immediately their vigorous strategy was in evidence in the initiation of the freshman landlubbers, and later in Urban Hall on St. Ursula's Day, when they efficiently and generously took over in the galley, serving a breakfast fit for an admiral. With all their flags at full mast, they cruised through the Catholic Chronicle, Red Cross, and operetta drives in triumph. VVith every member aboard at their Mission Carnival in May, they were in great part responsible for giving that activity the gold stripe of success, As their part on the assembly line, the sophomorespresented in March a timely vocation skit entitled, What Shall I Be? , in which they presented the advantages of the various professions open to the young aspirant. To bring new enthusiasm and new ideas to the class they selected Carol Finn, chief executive, with a board of directors including Angela Miller, Terrie Gladieux, and Joan McNerney. The class baffled the campus with .requests for tinfoil in November, but the secret was out the next month when the girls saw the delightful celestial decorations at the Junior- Senior Prom, first special activity of the class. That night, whirling couples danced past gaily decorated Christmas trees at the gala holiday frolic. February heralded a style showy in which the Juniors gave hints to those who would lead the Easter Parade. The latest spring fashions were shown by some of our loveliest models. Dancing and refreshments followed the main attractions. Now the Juniors look forward eagerly to the coming year, which will bring with it more opportunities for good times-and hard work. The Student League, established in l9l9, has for its purpose to coordinate the activ- ities of St. Ursula's and to cultivate and promote participation in movements, religious, social, and intellectual. Every student is a member by virtue of her enrollment in the Academy. General meetings, were held semi-annually on October twenty-first, the feast of St. Ursula, and on May thirty-first, the feast of St. Angela. At these times reports were given on the various branches of the Spiritual Council and the Social Committees. The Senior Class Officers, by virtue of their election, presided over the meetings. Special spiritual and social activities were the separate responsibilities of the various classes: the Freshmen, the Apostleship of Prayer, the Sophomores, the Missions, the Legion of Mary, and the preparation for the St. Ursula Day breakfast, the Juniors, the Eucharistic Committee, Christ's Courtiers, and the Junior-Senior Prom, the Seniors, Our Lady's Com- mittee and the URSULINE, the SCROLL. Reports by special appointment were given on those activities which concern the en- tire student body: Athletics, Orchestra, Glee Club, Dramatics, the Red Cross. Each unit had the privilege of promoting its own interests by an entertainment or other enterprise. The speakers and their various organizations were. Ann Calaway, Chairman, Louise Lynch, the Constitution, Audrey Boicey, secretary, Claire Shondell, the Life of St. Ursula, Kay Justin, Our Lady's Committee, Clare Manion, the Eucharistic Committee, Ruth Gib- son, the Missions, Polly Hartmann, the Legion of Mary, Shirley Rominski, the Apostleship of Prayer, Doris Robitaille, the Publications, Margaret Murray, Dramatics, Renee Glen- non, the Orchestra and Glee Club, Meredith Hague-Rogers, Athletics. 38 THE SCROLL FIRST ROW--Margaret Murray, Ruth Gibson, Clare Manion, Louise Q . The Apostleship of Prayer, sponsored by the Freshman Class, had a very success- ful year according to a letter received from Father Stephen O'Beirne, S.J., moderator of the Sacred Heart League, and editor of the Messenger of the Sacred Heart. ln the letter sent to Sister Mary Charles, mod- erator of the SUA League Unit, Father G'Beirne commended the girls, saying they did more than fairly well in their sub- scription drive, which netted over two hun- dred dollars. The total number of girls enrolled in the League of the Sacred Heart since i875 is now 679,030. . . missions. . . The Mission Committee was super- active this year. ln October, the Seniors sponsored a dance, in February, the Juniors, a tea and style show, in April, the Fresh- men held a theater party, and in May, the Sophomores, in true grand finale style, con- ducted a carnival-all to put St. Ursula's one notch ahead on the diocesan pace- maker roster. Several informational lectures were giv- en and movies shown by Oblate of Mary Immaculate missionaries: Father Harold Connelly, Father James Burke, and Father Francis McSorley. Father Constantine Burns, of Maryknoll, also lectured on his experiences in China. The purpose of Our Lady's Committee is to enkindle and keep vibrant the stu- dent's love for Our Blessed Mother. Guided by the Senior Class, the com- mittee spreads its activities into every class- room throughout the four years of high school. By means of various functions, such as, The Queen's Work drive, the reci- tation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin before the major feasts of Our Lady, the care of the pamphlet rack, and the May Crowning, this Committee endeavors to bring the student body closer to Mary, youth's ideal. TI-IE SCROLL . . legion of Mary. . . Sanctification of its members by prayer and active cooperation for the advance- ment of the reign of Christ is the purpose of the Legion. - To be eligible for membership, it is necessary to spend a specified amount of time each day in some special work for Our Lady. At any time one may find a member faithfully fulfilling one of the following duties: visiting the sick in hospitals, aiding with sacristry work in the parishes, making over old rosaries, and collecting and distri- buting religious magazines. l 43 . . retreat. . . Dedicated to the Blessed Mother and Saint Angela, Foundress of the Ursuline Order, the retreat was most profitably spent in striving to draw closer and closer to Christ in a deeper appreciation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments. Among the never-to-be-forgotten spirit- ual gems which we tucked away in our minds and hearts are those which encour- aged a desire tor perfection--personal sanctitication-in the path God has marked out for us. To find our special vocation requires prayer and docility to the Will ot God. Whatever state is chosen, however, the work is for God. .. euchmfistic committee. . . The purpose of the Eucharistic Com- mittee is to bring the students of the Acad- emy into ci closer union with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to encourage devotion to His Sacred Heart. To accomplish this aim a guard ot honor, under the title of Christ's Courtiers, has been organized. Members of this Eucharistic band pledge a fifteen-minute weekly visit to the Blessed Sacrament, dur- ing which they pray especially for the spread of Christ's Kingdom on earth, Damnris Nelson, Mary Ellen Barry, Nanzy Ollivicr A 44 THE SCROLL . . religion. . . l Patricia Laskey and Barbara Stedman are in the throes of the three-hour examination, the results of which, coupled with the tour-year average in Christian Doctrine, bring to the winner the Bishop's Cross, which His Excellency conters at the annual Commencement. ?Tcligion is the opium of the people. Thus speak the godless. Possibly they are co? ec , for even a fallacy contains a grain of truih. lt, however, religion means the deadening of one's interest in worldly pleasures which can deoden the soul, then religion' accomplishes its purpose. That purpose is to center the mind upon God and entice the will to approach His love by pointing out that the values of this lite are nothing in comparison with the values of possessing Him in time and eternity. Such is the ultimate goal of religious teaching in the elementary grades, high THE SCROLL school and college. Without such teach- ing, pupils would never realize the impor- tance ot Christ's guarantee: lt thou wilt enter into lite, keep the Commandments. Yet how can pupils keep them it they do not know them? Religious teaching, then, gives them that knowledge, for with the deeper understanding of God's Law, there arises a deeper love of God Himself. Only then can they serve Him, for one never serves a person he does not love. lt religion, then, be that much ot an opiate, let us have more of it. Francis P. Mazzurco Twenty-seven years ago, the Senior Class of St. Ursula's brought forth their first literary effort, The Scroll. ln the years following, the pride and joy of Ursuline girls grew from a paper-bound quarterly to the proportions of a leather-covered yearbook. Representing a school of less than 300 girls, the Scroll staffs have produced each year, books which are most creditably rated among high school annuals, winning national recognition. Following the example of the Class of l947, The Scroll is again being presented in yearbook form. The l948 edition, however, is outstanding for the addition of more photo- graphs and dropping the literary supplement altogether. ' During September, the advertising and subscription drives were held, the returns sur- passing the i947 record. Because of the smaller size of the class, the cooperation of every senior was needed and was truly forthcoming. Since in years to come the Scroll may be the only tangible reminder of our sojourn at St. Ursula's, we of the l948 staff have tried, and we think, succeeded in making this your book. 48 THE SCROLL . . staff Sw UPPER: Laurene Krispin Betty Lau Gedert, Nancy Conklin, Donna Weiss, Patricia Laskey, Judy LOWER: Nancy Madden, Damaris Nelson, Audrey Boicey, Mary Rose Mazzurcop Claire Shondell MISSING: Barbara Swaim, Patricia Hillebrand THE SCROLL Bargmann, SITTING: 49 the ursuline Co- Edito rs .....,.. Legend said that the beautiful statue of the Madonna would some- time be touched by a miracle and would breathe and speak on a Christmas Eventide, when the perfect gift is laid at her feet. It one can judge by the number enrolled, then Latin, which keeps over one hundred and titty busy every day at St. Ursula's, is one of the most popular courses in the curriculum. To make it a living language, advanced students use the Auxilium Latinum, a monthly published in Latin by the Association tor the Promotion of the Study of Latin. Here the Virgil class share the research booklets they compiled as a required project during their study ot the epic. 66 THE SC'ROLL ..ge1'mcm. .. This is the goal towards which the St. Ursula Academy Alumnae Association is directing its every effort. lt was for this purpose that the Spring Tea was held on April eleventh, at which a government bond was raffled, the proceeds for which amounted to one thousand dollars. Other activities included a Mass in November for the living and deceased members, a mid-winter dance at the Commodore Perry Hotel Ballroom, and the most momentous event in the minds of the seniors-the reception and banquet in June, when the fifty-seven mem- bers of the Class of 1948 will be initiated into the Alumnae. As set forth in the Constitution, the Association has for its object: to perpetuate the teachings and ideals inculcated by its Alma Mater, to encourage loyalty and fellowship among its members, to establish and sustain three scholarships to provide a Catholic high school education for worthy girls, to assist the Ursuline Nuns materially when contingencies Ol'lSe. f The Alumnae quarterly, in its second year of publication, made its appearance in printed format, thus replacing the mimeographed effect of previous years. I T Young men and young women know that It takes time-a lot of time-to - complete their education. But it never is completed. Civilization will E cease to progress when people stop developing improved products. E I Only a few years ago, many men thought that the ultimate had been 1 I achieved in the glass industry. l-low could there be anything new to learn I 1 in such an age-old product, they asked. 1 Yet, the. past IO years have seen greater advances in the glass industry I T than had been believed possible. One of the new developments is I T Thermopane, an insulating windowpane. I ' Thermopane is a combination of two lights' of glass with a dry air space T 5 between. The two lights are sealed at the edges with a metal-to-glass bond to keep out dirt and moisture. ln use, Thermopane offers many advantages E I over single pane glazing. 1 Thermopane and other modern glasses have broadened the horizon for using I glass in homes, schools, stores, hospitals, offices, factories, hotels and I apartments. You see, it takes time to learn. - I o Lrnsnv-ownns - rom: Msg!-WZ-fVWf4'f5W GLASS 1 1 4..-........................ -- .-.. ....... - .. ............. - -,.,...n.g.
