Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1963 volume:

Who is she that comes forth like the dawn, as beautiful as the moon, as resplendent as the sun? Terrible as an army in battle array. Cant. 6, io Zetel Van Wijsheid - Our Lady of Wisdom 1963 BLUE MANTLE SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE NOTRE DAME INDIANA GRADUATION 1963 EDUCATION in the great humanistic tradition is more needed than ever, 174 graduates were told at commencement exercises in O’Laugh in Auditorium, by Dr. ALAN SlMPSON, Dean of the College at the University of Chicago. “JJ 7 hatever nourishes the mind and the spirit,” as distinguished from the training which is merely practical or professional or from the trivialities which are no training at all, is the best education, said Dr. Simpson. Such an education involves a combination of knowledge, skills, and standards, he pointed out. While opinions may differ as to the kind and amount of knowledge essential to the educated person, there is no ambiguity about two necessary skills: the ability to think well and to express oneself in clean forcible prose, “with some relish for style 7 An educated man must also, Dr. Simpson thinks, rid his mind of its “wigwams ’ He must uphold moral values and virtues, includin g honesty, decency, courage, and public spirit. Finally, he must have, especially today, the kind of versatile, flexible mind that can deal with new and explosive conditions. At the BACCALAUREATE MASS in the Church of Loretto earlier in the day, BISHOP Andrew GrutkA of Gary, after analyzing man’s basic road to happiness, concluded: “Christ teaches us that a man’s happiness is not a matter of what he possesses or what he has, but, of what he is. It is not conditioned by the attitude of others toward us. No more than by exterior and accidental good, such as fortune, health, or the charms of existence. It is not subject to the course that events take but to the manner in which we react in the face of them. Happiness depends on us — its origin lies in us. If we follow the plan of Christ and live as His disciples, we have in ourselves the means of being happy.” MILKO JEGLIC, Chairman of the Mathematics Department and recipient of the 1963 Faculty Award; MRS. High priority went to the football game between the Barat Bombers and the SMC Maulers, a rock ’em sock ’em sort, with plenty of laughs, especially when our four horsemen tried a triple reverse in the backfield and for¬ got who got what when. We won the coveted trophy, a rolling pin, after somebody broke a tie ending by flipping a coin. Sally O ' Connor and Jo Lehnis; Irene Canny, Bobby Borchers, Marie Flynn; Cathy Ronan and Becky Borchers; Barb Cock Music by the “Four Winds”, sitting on the grass, bidding on box lunches which some of the boys had prepared came next. Then those not “lucky” enough to have a box lunch took to the long walk back for dinner on campus, tightening muscles and all. The big day ended with a mixer for all at Stepan Center in the evening. Fun Day ’62 had been a success. OF u H | HDLt CRO Symposium_ ’62 Student Council sponsored Symposium ’62 to provoke interest and discussion about the Catholic student’s role in so¬ ciety. Catholic students from both Catholic and non-Catholic colleges in the Midwest attended the Novemb er 2-4 week-end. | Father Andrew Greeley, of the Univer¬ sity of Chicago, gave the keynote ad¬ dress: “The Place of the Student in College and in Society.” On Saturday, Mrs. Brennan, Saint Mary College, spoke on “The Catholic, First as a Ra¬ tional Human Being, Then as a Cath¬ olic”; Michael Novak, graduate stu¬ dent at Harvard University, on “The Catholic Student in a Secular Environ¬ ment”. A student panel — Phoebe Blake ’63 of Saint Mary’s, John Gearen of Notre Dame, Al Leigh of Akron, and Arnold Lopez-Ceparo of Indiana Uni¬ versity — discussed “Commitment: Its Definition, Development, and Effects.” Dr. Robert Christin, University of Notre Dame, ended the symposium Sunday afternoon with his talk on “Christian Humanism.” College Bowl Sally Schumacher, Sis Reynolds, Judy Grabski, Eileen Bleeg, Maria Mazza (Below) Margaret Burns Matching wits in a local College Quiz Bowl, four Saint Mary’s scholars took on N.D. juniors. Eileen Bleeg, Sis Reynolds, Sally Schumacher, and captain Judy Grabski displayed their knowledge of fields from sports to theology. Notre Dame won, but not before there had been real struggles over toss-up questions, bonus points, and the rest. ft it The sophomore class sponsored the tradi¬ tional Founders’ Day program on October 13, feast of Father Edward Sorin. Events began with morning Mass and closed with a banquet. The theme of this year’s con¬ vocation was the ecumenical spirit of Fa¬ ther Moreau, founder of the Holy Cross community, as manifested during his life by his work, and afterward in what we call the “living spirit of the Holy Cross.” The speeches of girls who have done apostolic work in Montana, Chile, Mexico, and Pak¬ istan testified to this enduring spirit of ecumenism and response to the needs of the time. Margie Carroll and Judy Hamilton, co-chairmen of Hostess Committee, register participants of SYMPOSIUM ' 62. Denise Cavanaugh, general chairman, oversees all. General Chairman of Symposium ’62 was Denise Cavanaugh. Committee Chairmen were Roberta Blake and Carole Barskis, speakers; Pat Rothermich, discussion groups; Stefanie Kruchko, working papers; Theresa Smith, publicity; Margie Carroll and Judy Hamilton, hostesses; Kathy Cullinan, pro¬ gramming; Kathy Roeder, finance; Sister Anne Monica, faculty advisor. I At SYMPOSIUM ' 62: Eileen Argent, John Gearren, Julie Luken, Diane Burns Betty Ann Rice and a little girl at the Christmas Party Sally O ' Connor at Old Folks Home Christmas ; For Children and Old People Christmas parties co-sponsored by the Notre Dame Blue Circle and the Sophomore Class of Saint Mary’s included the Mishawaka Chil¬ dren’s Home and Family Center, with twist and Umbo contests, music by the “Nightlighters” for dancing, and general festivities. Visiting the elderly or the mentally ill gave the Cl LA and Third Order of Saint Francis an op¬ portunity to awaken joy and enthusiasm, some¬ times by a simple bingo game or a few notes on the piano from favorite tunes. Weekly visits to a Children’s home has brought many students this year into lay apostolic work done in the spirit of Christ, whether they were dishing out food, tying little shoe laces, or com¬ forting and taking an interest in a lonely child. And could it have been that rambunctious Big Sister of mine floating beneath a halo of holly from the evening ban¬ quet, until the culminating morning Mass and breakfast? Yes . . . oh yes, it most certainly was. And it was also you, Little Sister, who walked in awe between black junior robes and flickering candles, re¬ flected in the warm brown of the wood panelling of the Great Hall. Up the east stairway, freshmen and seniors led the way to the chapel, with “We Three Kings of the Orient Are.” Trailing the procession, the juniors, with solemn expressions, showed their satisfaction: the trials of the practice sessions were worth the new ceremony of placing their “lights” in the sand filled boxes. 75 - • ._ Mardi Gras ND’s Mardi Gras this year was bigger and better than ever. The theme: the Roaring 20’s and 30’s. At the ball, Jane McClelland was queen, with Dona Duncan and Barb Bernhard members of her court. Next day: brunch, Louis Armstrong concert, carnival opening. Kay Lynch designed the Saint Mary’s booth. Kathy Phee won the ward¬ robe. All in all, a wonderful Mardi Gras, that magical medley of music, dancing, gambling, people, laughter. 77 Marilyn McPheron pouring tea for Debbie Eisenmenger ' s parents Debbie was missed by the camera. • : ’ :■ | Parent Weekend In column at left, reading down: Mr. and Mrs. Connors, Suzanne Linton (back to camera), Judy Kramer and her parents. As in the past, the year opened with wonderful excuses for fresh air and things, the games. Outstanding performances included the “Evening with Two Players,” an exciting troupe of Flamenco dancers, a fiery group of Greek dancers, to break the barrage of studies and papers. In spite of lesson plans, PTA meetings, and correcting tests, student teachers are reported to have shed at least one tear after teaching their last classes. With winter came the last Christmas party for seniors. Many of the hardier got up early 155 (or stayed up all night), to follow or await, depending on their stamina, carolers through Le Mans, down to Stapleton to sit under the tree. Second semester brought winter carnival (I have weak ankles but I love hot chocolate), Mardi Gras (Can anyone come over to paint crates for the SMC booth?), pink slips (I’ve solved the problem of how to decorate the nursery walls), Saint Patrick ' s Day (She said I was doing the Irish jig!), Paster vacation (Yes, sure, I spent the whole day studying for comps), comps (to the juniors — they are really not too bad, but be sure to finish the reading list), the dunes (Am I really that red?), and 156 £ Senior Ball (Who ' s that girl at the end of the receiving line?) Thanks to all the teas, we have an idea of what to expect at the AAUW, and what it. means to be an alumna. Thank you, Saint Mary ' s, for a wonderful four years. With the help of family, faculty, administration, friends, and our senior sponsor, Sister Anne Monica, we are ready for travel, study, marriage, or work. Thank you for all your help and love. —The Senior Class of 1963.
