. The Place W ere Thy Glory Dwelleth On May first, the seniors were privileged to attend the rededication of the Saint Maryls convent chapel, the Church of Our Lady of Loreto. The original structure, built in 1886, was modeled on the sixteenth century church of Santa Maria Carignana in Genoa. The reconstructed edifice preserves the essential lines of the older building. The nave, a part of which is shown in the photograph, is formed by eight arches of olive leaves laid in mosiac, representing the eight beatitudes and leading toward the ring of the central cupola. Within the cupola is a circle of twelve stained-glass windows representing the Apostles. Very large pieces of glass, chosen as Wedge-shaped as possible so as to increase the variation of hue within the same sheet, were used for these windows. The glass, blown in Murano, Italy, was left in its total natural brilliancy with an effect of grisaille or stain being added. Other windows, in the nave and in the towers, are the windows of the first church. The location of the rose windows remains the same, the other windows were grouped into three areas: in the two towers and the choir loft. Suspended from the apex of the cupola is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the dove. Made of two sheets of stainless steel six feet in diameter, it reflects in everchanging hues the rich jewel-like colors of the Apostle windows. The floor of the nave is of white Georgia marble. In the walls are set four mosiac panels, eighty feet high and twenty-seven feet wide at the base. Proceeding clockwise one sees first, at the left, the Tree of jesse panel, then, between the choir loft and the sanctuary, the panel of Our Lady of Sorrows, on the other side of the sanc- tuary is the panel of Our Lady Queen of Heaven, and next to the organ, the Rosary panel. The panel of the Tree of jesse shows figures grouped in three tiers. First, there are the major prophets of the Old Testament, each holding a scroll bearing the symbol of the corresponding Evangelist. On the second tier are depicted four rulers of the Old Testament and Christian times. The third tier shows great educators and founders of religious communities. On Our Lady of Sorrows, panel a scroll bearing the text of Simeon's prophecy accompanies seven scenes depicting the Dolors of Our Lady. The central figure, the Mother of Sorrows, wrapt in veils of mourning which cover even her face, speaks to us of grief no artist can portray. Seven golden swords pierce her Immaculate Heart. The panel of Our Lady Queen of Heaven depicts Our Lady and is framed by a golden aureole inscribed with the names of six of the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The seventh and highest Gift, Wisdom, is shown in the form of a dove. The background of this panel represents the heavenly Jerusalem and is interwoven with titles from the Litany of Loreto. The tips of palm trees melt into the sea, a symbol of the world and of all beginnings, into which How the four rivers of Paradise through a rainbow Gate of Heaven Uanua, roeli, Foederis Arcaj. In the celes- tial island surrounding Our Lady can be seen the Tower of Ivory, the Tower of David, and the Seat of Wisdom, the last represented by an altar at the summit, where the crowned initials of Maria Regina are inscribed. Above, the House of Loreto fD0mus aureal is transported through the sky under a golden star CStella matutinal. The Rosary panel shows a Howering bush interlacing its branches around the fifteen mys- teries of the rosary, which are represented partly by personages and partly by symbols. White stars accompany the Joyful mysteries, red stars the Sorrowful, and gold stars the Glorious.
