Their sequence indicates something of the mind of the college and its admin- istration, something of the growth of the school in terms of its past no less than its present and future. For fifty years faculties and students have dreamed of all three buildings. For a much longer future faculties and students will grow to the fine intellectual statures which these faculties inspire and stimulate. On the cornerstone of Moreau Hall this text from Chesterton has been incised: Art is the signature of man? Since man is a child of God his signature is that of his Father. As His children we build and auto- graph in love this home for the beauty of God and the God of beauty. SISTER M. MADELEVA In Her Relations -. ith Her President Sister Mudelevu. The Place W ere Thy Glory Dwelleth On May first, the seniors were privileged to attend the rededication of the Saint Maryls convent chapel, the Church of Our Lady of Loreto. The original structure, built in 1886, was modeled on the sixteenth century church of Santa Maria Carignana in Genoa. The reconstructed edifice preserves the essential lines of the older building. The nave, a part of which is shown in the photograph, is formed by eight arches of olive leaves laid in mosiac, representing the eight beatitudes and leading toward the ring of the central cupola. Within the cupola is a circle of twelve stained-glass windows representing the Apostles. Very large pieces of glass, chosen as Wedge-shaped as possible so as to increase the variation of hue within the same sheet, were used for these windows. The glass, blown in Murano, Italy, was left in its total natural brilliancy with an effect of grisaille or stain being added. Other windows, in the nave and in the towers, are the windows of the first church. The location of the rose windows remains the same, the other windows were grouped into three areas: in the two towers and the choir loft. Suspended from the apex of the cupola is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the dove. Made of two sheets of stainless steel six feet in diameter, it reflects in everchanging hues the rich jewel-like colors of the Apostle windows. The floor of the nave is of white Georgia marble. In the walls are set four mosiac panels, eighty feet high and twenty-seven feet wide at the base. Proceeding clockwise one sees first, at the left, the Tree of jesse panel, then, between the choir loft and the sanctuary, the panel of Our Lady of Sorrows, on the other side of the sanc- tuary is the panel of Our Lady Queen of Heaven, and next to the organ, the Rosary panel. The panel of the Tree of jesse shows figures grouped in three tiers. First, there are the major prophets of the Old Testament, each holding a scroll bearing the symbol of the corresponding Evangelist. On the second tier are depicted four rulers of the Old Testament and Christian times. The third tier shows great educators and founders of religious communities. On Our Lady of Sorrows, panel a scroll bearing the text of Simeon's prophecy accompanies seven scenes depicting the Dolors of Our Lady. The central figure, the Mother of Sorrows, wrapt in veils of mourning which cover even her face, speaks to us of grief no artist can portray. Seven golden swords pierce her Immaculate Heart. The panel of Our Lady Queen of Heaven depicts Our Lady and is framed by a golden aureole inscribed with the names of six of the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The seventh and highest Gift, Wisdom, is shown in the form of a dove. The background of this panel represents the heavenly Jerusalem and is interwoven with titles from the Litany of Loreto. The tips of palm trees melt into the sea, a symbol of the world and of all beginnings, into which How the four rivers of Paradise through a rainbow Gate of Heaven Uanua, roeli, Foederis Arcaj. In the celes- tial island surrounding Our Lady can be seen the Tower of Ivory, the Tower of David, and the Seat of Wisdom, the last represented by an altar at the summit, where the crowned initials of Maria Regina are inscribed. Above, the House of Loreto fD0mus aureal is transported through the sky under a golden star CStella matutinal. The Rosary panel shows a Howering bush interlacing its branches around the fifteen mys- teries of the rosary, which are represented partly by personages and partly by symbols. White stars accompany the Joyful mysteries, red stars the Sorrowful, and gold stars the Glorious. Dear Graduates: Grace is a Word of many mysteries and meanings, human and divine. It is both gift and gratitude. For the soul it is the life and love of God. Gabriel could find no better greeting than, f'Hail, full of grace. In the natural order, grace implies the fullest de- velopment of our faculties, the mark of high achieve- ment in every cultural sphere. Hence, the best product of Christian education for Women is the graceful and gracious Woman who combines learning with love, knowledge of things with wisdom that looks beyond things, a sense of human realities with a devotion to ideal ends that have their hidden roots in divinity. Grace is in the faith you believe and the education you have received. It is in the congratulations I offer you today, It is in the prayer that goes with this message, invoking upon you the blessing of her in Whom is all grace of the way? May she keep her blue mantle about you from the door of Saint Mary's to the Gate of Heaven. Devotedly in Christ, J' gdfr S Mosr REVEREND LEO A. This liturgy has immense historical significance, for in taking us back to pre- Reformation days, it not only revives observances of the earliest Church, but also follows more closely the pattern of modern living. ANTIPHON 8 As the Lord was entering the holy city, the children of the jews, with branches of palm, announced the resur- rection of the Life: Hosanna,', they cried, in the highest li' When the people heard that jesus was entering jerusalem, they went forth to meet Him with branches '79 of palm: f'Hosanna,,' they cried, Min the highest. From PSALM 23 O gates, lift high your lintels: be raised, O ancient doors, that He may enter, the King of glory. Who is He, this King of glory? The Lord Hosts, He is the King of gloryli' COLLECTIVE PRAYER O Lord jesus Christ, our King and Redeemer, in Whose honor we have borne these palms and chanted these solemn praises, grant, in Thy goodness, that wher- ever these branches have been carried, there the grace of Thy blessing may descend, and let Thy right hand protect from all the wicknedness and the deceit of the evil spirits those whom It has redeemed, Thou Who livest and reignest forever and ever. C.S.C. 1'rosir1z'nt of the LlI7i'i'l'l'SiI X' of Nom' Dann' The Christian and the Future The Christian throws himself fearlessly upon the future, because he believes in Him which is, and which was, and which is to come. He can endure to be one of an everlasting company while in this world, as well as in the next. He is content to begin and break off g to do his part and no more, to set about what others must accomplish, to sow where others must reap. None has finished his work, and cut it short in righteousness, but He who is One. We, His mem- bers, who have but a portion of His fulness, execute but a part of His purpose. One lays the foundation, and another builds thereupon, one levels the mountain, and another 'fbrings forth the headstone with shoutings . . .H Does it not seem a very strange thing that we should be fed, and lodged, and clothed in spiritual things by per- sons we never saw or heard of, and who never saw us, or could think of us, hundreds of years ago? Does it not seem strange that men should be able, not merely by acting on others, not by a continued influence carried on through many minds in a long succession, but by one simple and direct act, to come into contact with us and, as if with their own hand, to benefit us, who live centuries later? . . .
