The newest look of all has been the construction of Plaza '85 , donated to St. Mary's by the class of 1985. This renovated site is meant to provide all students with a place to relax and study during their lunch and break. It has become a real source of pride for the entire school community. A number of new teachers also joined our faculty this year and quickly became a part of the St. Mary's family. The students did not hesitate to accept them into our school, mak- ing them feel right at home. Along with new faculty members, came a freshman class that numbered over 200 - one of the largest fresh- man classes ever.' All of the new additions at St. Mary's can only add to the great tradition that has made our school what it is today and will be tomor- row. Q f ' .E 5 LO r 1. Q P s r Seniors La out he Welcome M Freshman initiation always starts the year off with a hilarious bang, bringing out the tradition and spirit of St. Mary's. The Seniors were limit- ed to only one day of initiation this year, but they made the best of what they had. The main goal of the Class of 86' was not to ostracize the fresh- man, but to make them feel like members of the St. Mary's family. The seniors had a good time making their freshman slaves carry their books or get their lunches. Freshmen had a good experience too, as they got to know their Masters and each other by participating in the antics. All in all, initiation built a strong foundation for begining a new school year. in 1. I swear that senior was this big! 2. A face only a mother would love. 3. The keeper of the Freshman. 4. X A f Success comes from strength - both physical and mental. And St. Mary 's students are encouraged to build up their minds along with their bodies. Granted, physical workouts help us look good. But, along with toning our physiques, comes the need to tone our minds. When we build our minds, we build our futures. The future awaits us eagerly, and we have begun to shape it. At St. Mary's our opportunities are limitless. A strong mind, complimented by a healthy body, enables us to take full advantage of what we have. St. Mary 's means great tradition in academics as well as athletics. 1. Poetry in motion. fMike Cortwrightj. 2. Knights reaching for the sky!! 3. Keep your eye on the target, IJohn Cruzj. 4. A Knight o Remember Homecoming is the most important event during the fall. The meaning be- hind it is really what makes the evening special. St. Mary's always has a large amount of alumni at football games, but Homecoming brings old friends together for a night of reminiscing. As usual, there was a large crowd in attendance for the game. At half-time, Wendi Gray was crowned Queen, and Michael Richmond was later crowned King during the dance. Homecoming did not have the typical floats and convertibles to escort the can- didates this year. Yet, it still had that spe- cial spirit which created an unique atmo- sphere for the returning alumni. f'5, X4 Q 4 ,mm .X 'Y -W .ae Quill' 'iff Tx Z W 'V t I 1. Lost In Love Prom is a word that has a special meaning of its own. To most, it is a night that will always live in one's memory: the most special night of the year. It is a time for looking sensation- al and living it up. Everyone is dressed to the hilt with somewhere incredibly special to go. For one night the world is your dance floor: every song is your song. The 1986 Prom, held at the Granada Royale, was appropriately given the theme Lost In Love. The banquet room was beautifully decorated in red and white. Couples crowded the dance floor throughout the evening, while others lingered in the courtyard to have their pictures taken. Everyone seemed to be Lost in Love. A very pretty Stephanie Addison was crowned Prom Queen, and coinciden- tally, her escort Shawn Murphy won the title of Prom King. For Seniors, it was a time for end- ings and wonderful beginnings. What it represents is the exchanging of class officers and an expression of thanks for their participation in the Student Council throughout the year. The candle, which is exchanged during the ceremony, symbolizes the responsibility of the incoming officers. The 1985- 1986 Student Council's primary goal was to promote more school spirit and bring back tradition. This was a difficult goal to achieve, but the rewards of suc- cess were many. The Student Council was fortunate to have the support of their peers, which made the year a smooth one. - Jill Clancy Student ounc1l ,.,,.,,,,...-few? 1. If I 'm Dreaming, Don 't Wake Me - Mike Diaz A prominent valley prep football coach was quoted early in September as saying, We're going to ha ve to progress quickly to get close to the state game. That Coach Far- rell, he sure is a sly one isn 't he? Just how quickly did we progress? Quick enough to continue a 23 game winning streak, allow 7 points a game, and win a second consecutive championship. How's that for quick progress? No one would have believed, had it even been suggested in September that we might go undefeated - much less win a second consecutive championship. That certainly wasn't our thinking in mid-July as we gathered at Monterey. Can you imagine? Mid-July at Monterey! 'Sounds exotic like there should be a beach some where. What we did have at Monterey was a bunch of spirited, determined and dedi- cated athletes. Athletes who turned that spirit, determination and dedication into one of the most remarkable football sea- sons imaginable. N X- I I ' a ' 1 . I'll miss Monterey without a beach, the daily search for a park to practice, the trip and-a- half to our home field, the old rickety new bus, secret pals, gold pants and state cham- pionships. The inexperience may have hit the Knights early in league play when the victory smiles became losing frowns. With too many losses and not enough victories, the Knights fell a little short of some of their goals. When Coach Ahern and Coach Clayton return next year with an older and much more powerful lineup they hope to ful- fill all ot' their goals. They cheered for Coach D's football team and attended every basketball game to urge the players to victory. They went to Santa Barbara, Califor- nia for a summer cheer camp, and learned quite a bit about the sport. Their enthusiasm led them to a cheer clinic at the UofA, where they learned even more cheer secrets. Now with the season over, the girls gathered all their spirit togeth- er for tryouts, hoping their zest will put them up to Varsity. 1. Bottom: Barbara Rojas, Cathy Tiffa- ny. Team Conference 82 Le tterm en E? if x . h-.J iq 4 G Le tterwom en E530 1 wi X, Coach 0 The Year Throughout the years there has been a history of great coaches at St. Mary's. Ed Dougherty, a leg- end at St. Mary's, coached during the late 60's and early 7019. There was Pat Lavin who coached dur- ing the mid 70's. Now there is a man who will definitely go down in history as one of the great coaches of St. Mary's. His name is Pat Farrell, 1985 Coach of the Year. Coach Farrell knows year in and year out that his teams will not be the most talented or the strongest, and definitely not the biggest. Yet, he refuses to let it discourage him. The 1985 State Championship Team is the per- fect example. Coach Farrell knew that the group of young men he had was probably the smallest and least talented team ever at St. Mary's. He knew that to repeat as State Champions would require his greatest effort in preparing his team for every game, and that is just what he did. He spent long hours, day after day and night after night, work- ing on a way to prepare his team. He watched films constantly, seeking any possible edge to gain. Many times this caused him to take cat naps on his break during the school day to keep himself go- mg. Why would any man take him- self through such great extremes? That isjust the kind ofman Coach Farrell is. He has such great lo ve for the game, his team, and above all his school, that he is willing to make many personal sacrifices. He demands the most from himself and expects nothing but the best from his fellow coaches and his team. Year in and year out he gets it. Coach Farrell has often said that the day he loses that feeling of winning the State Champion- ship is the day he retires. It looks like Coach Farrell will be around for a long time. No matter what may happen in the future, this man with the shabby mustache, the beat up shoes, and the out-of- style leather jacket, will always be our COACH OF THE YEAR. - Carlos Rodriquez ...Nqr ef X X 4 H..
