There is a cast fstudentsb, producers fAdministratorsJ, directors Cfcultyj, a supporting cast Cpar- entsj, and even special effects fsports and bandh. St. Mary's has all the elements of a good movieg humor, drama, action, triumph and tragedy. The entire range of human emotions and exper- ience are portrayed at our school. As a movie has its credits to tell the players in the story, St. Mary's has its yearbook to serve the same purpose. Captured within these pages are just a few scenes stills from the film-like flow of St. Mary's. fl! I 1 i axsx 7 4 CCNTENTS PLLS LKFE . . . CAN ACADEMKCS .... GRGAHKZPQTKONS SP 01115 ...... With the bright clothes and wacky wayout hair-styles, it's a sure thing that co- medians such as Buster Keaton, Stan Laural, and Oliver Hardy would feel right at home. A TYPICAL DAY THE ET The typical day at St. Mary's involves more than attending classes. Everyday the stu- dents of St. Mary's are faced with new chal- lenges, and new ideas. There is always something different happening, and some- thing new to take part in. These differences from day to day are among the things that make attending St. Mary's enjoyable. T .WEA nys Graduation is the grand finale of four years of hard work and struggle. For some, it marks the end of their school career: for others it is only a begin- ning. When the seniors graduate, they are filled with emotions of triumph, success, and pride in what they have obtained, How- ever, sorrow is also pre- sent at this special event. Some friends will have to part and seek their own in- dividual paths in life. The Candlerose Ceremony is the passing of a spirit and responsibility from one Student Council to the next generation of offi- cers. These officers hold the responsibility of assur- ing that the student body's views and opinions are presented to school offi- cials. The candle, which is given to the incoming officers, represents the responsibil- ity of those students to be the guiding light for others to follow. LADY AND KNIGHT OF 1985 SALUTATORIAN AND VALEDICTORIAN The Lady and Knight of the Year are similar to the star actor and actress of a movie. The Lady of the year is cho- sen as the student who best exemplifies what St. Mary's is, both academically and in school spirit. The Knight is her counterpart who best shows the type of spirit, for- titude, and strength that is expected in all St. Mary's students. To be chosen as ei- ther Lady or Knight of the Year is a great privilege. by Gary Hadley LADY OF THE YEAR: Teresa Ke- vane. KNIGHT OF THE YEAR: Hans Laughner. The Salutatorian and Vale- dictorian represent the best St. Mary's has to offer aca- demically. For four years these two students have struggled, worked, and burned the midnight oil to reach this special honor. No matter what these two wish to do in the future, one thing is certaing they will be suc- cessful. The faculty and stu- dents congratulate them both. by Gary Hadley VALEDICTORIAN: Teresa Kevane fleftl. X, BIKE AND GOLF The Bicycle Club was an admi- rable institution introduced at St. Mary's this year. It's begin- ning can be traced back to a poll taken by the student body early in 1984. The students felt St. Mary's needed a club that would create a sense of sports- manship, develop ability for true physical fitness, and pro- vide a chance to broaden one's horizons. The Bicycle Club has fulfilled that need with the help of Bro. Gerard. This year as a team, the Bicycle Club has gone on many a bike trail and has had numerous experiences, which will never be forgotten. The Golf Club was a prestigious organization led by Father Joe and Brother Gerard. It set out to provide instruction to a pop- ular and delightful form of ex- ercise. The Club was started at the re- quest of our own St. Mary's stu- dent body in a poll conducted by Ms. Lumb. One of the main purposes was to see if enough people were interested in hav- ing St. Mary's compete in the A.A.A. Skyline League of the golf world. When asked about any future club plans, Father Joe said, We hope to play all through next year, and accom- plish strong bonds of friend- ship, competition, and true sportsmanship. KNIGHTS WEAR GOLD PANTS The traditional Montery Park workouts be- gan in early July with the Knights gath- ered, preparing for the up and coming sea- son. The eventual goal, as always and every year, was for the Knights to put on the gold pants for four victories, and come away with the State Title. The Knights began their season with a dis- appointing 14-3 loss to McClintock, but re- bounded as they always do, decisively de- feating the next three opponents. The turn- ing point in the Knight's season came from a loss to Moon Valley. It was a do-or-die situation with the Knights having to win the reamining 5 games to achieve the covet- ed Gold Pants. With Coach Farrell at the helm, the Knights were steered to consecutive victo- ries over Horizon, Apollo, Brophy, Deer Valley, and Shadow Mountain. The Knights were now in the playoffs, led by a fine group of Seniors and determined underclassmen. They disposed of Prescott and Amphitheater, leading to the match with the McClintock Chargers. The Knights had worked too hard and long under the tutelage of Coach Farrell to end the season early. They overwhelmed the Chargers rolling to a 24-7 victory. The Knights were now in the battle for the State Title. In the title game the team started slowly, but rolled to a decisive 31-14 victo- ry. The Knights ended the season with a 12- 2 record, along with the pride of being State Champs! The Knights could not get the right breaks at first, starting the season rather slowly. Yet, as the weeks progressed, the team began to show signs of great poten- tial. The team was led by the strong leadership of seniors, Steve Belles, Gilbert Castillo, Xavier Denogean and Hans Laughner. As the season came to a close, the Knights began to pick up the pace by winning their last four games and finishing 7-4 in league play. This record placed the Knights into the number two seat in the Sky- line Division Playoffs. The ultimate game against Greenway proved to be a heartbreaker for the Knights, as they lost in the overtime by one point, 41-40. The bright spot for the fu- ture of the team will be the leadership of junior point guard Mike De La Cruz and the improving consistency underneath the basket from sophomore Gary Blevins. The Knights as a whole learned a good deal from the fine coaching of Head Coach Ron Gray and his assistant Tom Nunez. The team learned to play with patience and poise, but most impor- tantly from the heart. by Rod Medrano TOP LEFT: Bet no one thought Rod could jump this high. tRod Medranob. His smile however could never remain his own, for if you were near him you to began to smile. He made people happy. Ill 1 T. MARY'S CATHCLIC CHURCH imll ,. I , I l Hx ,.. in nu I, A ' The oldest and best known Catholic church in the valley began as an adobe chapel in 1881. When the Franciscan Friars arrived in 1896 there were only 15 English-speaking families in the parish. The basement of the planned new church replaced the adobe structure in 1902 and was dedicated a year later. The basement is now the social hall. Finally the superstructure was begun in 1913 and was dedicated in 1915 by Bishop Henry Granjon. Until the late 1940's, St. Mary's was the Mother Church in the Valley of the Sun and was without doubt, the most important parish in the area and probably the largest in size. Today St. Mary's eagerly faces a new challenge of service to the downtown community. With two daily Masses at 7:00 A.M. and 12 05 P.M. and weekend services, this church welcomes residents and visitors to share with the parishioners a contemporary vision of faith. 7'- i V ft FRANCISCAN FRIARS 231 N. 3RD STREET C252-76515 REV.
