Nothing seems to get the juices flowing at St. Mary's like the sight of the green-and-white Knights charging onto the football field on any given Friday night in fall. Without football the first few months of school would, for many, be a far less exciting thing, especially after two months or so of a fun-filled and indolent summer. Football seasons come and go, but for those who par- ticipate in the intensity and dedication of the sus- tained and shared endeavor, football season leaves a residue that does not fade for a long time. And for the rest, the fans in the stands, who live or die each Friday with the team, each season br- ings its own anticipation, and leaves its own special elation or dejection. This account of the 1982 football season of the St. Mary's Knights is not an attempt to detail the play-by-play ebb and flow of the games. Nor will it list the sequence of accumulated points in any given game. Rather it will try to catch the flavor, the aftertaste, if you will, of the season as it un- folded game-by-game. It is nothing more nor less than an attempt, in a muted and muffled way, to re-live those salad days, with a fond hope of rekindling a little, the fires of our successes and the sting of our defeats on the striped green. AGAINST TREVOR BROWNE QBRUINSJ AT NORTH, SEPT. 10, SCORE 6-3 WIN For some Trevor Browne might sound like the name of a character from Brideshead Revisited. But to the football team on opening night, it rang more like a character from the Book of Kings, named Goliath. Trevor Browne, defen- ding State Champions, the team that had defeated Q29-281 the Knights by one yard in the '81 semi- finals, in a overtime Arizona Playoff. Trevor Browne, who started the '82 season ranked at 31 by some and '3 by others. Trevor Browne, with an offensive line that averaged 220 pounds up front. For years the pundits have been casting St. Mary's as David of the Old Testament's David- and-Goliath contest. This year the Knights would be slightly miscast. With the defensive front four of Nick Longo, Lionel Quihuis, Adrian Lopez, and Tom Hudson averaging close to 200 pounds, The knights might more accurately by typed as Goliath's younger brother. But even with the weight gap somewhat narrowed, this starter game loomed as a real tester. Opening with this game would be more like a plunge into Hawley Lake than a glide into a backyard Jacuzzi. The late summer practice sessions had not been kind to the Knights' bodies, and because of numerous injuries, the starting line-up had big holes plugged up with question marks. Matt Mar- tinez, would-be starting quarterback, had a broken hand. Lionel Quihuis, starting defensive line backer, had one too. Kaz Bilinski, starting tight end and linebacker had a severely sprained ankle. But, in spite of all, it turned out to be miracle-time for the Knights that opening Friday night. Down by 3-0 early in the fourth quarter, Steve Belles, Sophomore back-up quarterback, lofted one to star receiver Chris Buford for 30 yards and Buford scrambled another 29 to the Browne one. Darren Chapman did the honors on the next play. And it was defense by the Knights for the remaining 9 minutes and 50 seconds to walk away with big win number one. You can talk about first game lack of concen- tration, penalties, mistakes and unsustained drives, but, after all is said and done, you have to admit that in this first game the Knights fought the good fight, foiled the odds-makers, and found the right combination to finish the game in fine THE TRACK RECORD span rs Rfvrsw B FR. Ivsvnv FZRD o.F.M. fashion. ln a post-game interview, with a Gazette reporter, Coach Pat Farrell opened that Going in, he thought it would take nothing less than a miracle to win. As things turned out, we have to start calling Mr. Farrell Wonder Worker. lt all happened at North High Stadium, and was taped in full for all the skeptics to see on Cable TV on Saturday morning. AGAINST MOUNTAIN VIEW KTOROSJ SEPT. I7 AT NORTH HIGH, SCORE 22-23 WIN The Knights felt like a little mountain climbing on their second outing of the '82 football season. They had left clete prints all over this particular mountain for the past two years, but this time most of the polls had Mountain View ranked right up there with Everest, number one. And without a doubt, the charged up Toros were out to change the pattern of defeat. The first quarter was penalty-ridden, with slop- py, if intense play. Mountain View made some first down conversions and finally finished off with a flat pass, over Buford, for a clean score from the 22. The spiked-ball celebration of this event cost the Toros a small penalty, but the PAT was good. The rejoicing was short lived, because on the kick off, Carlton Campbell took the ball on the first bounce and delivered it forth with across Mountain View's goal line after running with it for 76 yards. Joe Ortiz failed to put the extra scoop of ice cream on this particular cone. Not long after that, the same fleet and sure-fingered Carlton Campbell dropped a punt and gave the ball away on the Knights 28. But in four downs, the Toros were three yards further back. With 1:36 to go in the half, Mountain View fumbled and Nick Longo dropped his huge bulk on the ball. With only 32 seconds left before half, Belles kept the ball and went around end for the score from the one yard line. Echeveste did the same for the two point PAT. With a I4-7 lead, most of the Knights team went to the locker room at half time. Kaz Bilinski and Carlton Campbell went to the hospital, Kaz with a leg injury that would sideline him for the entire season, and Carlton with possible broken ribs. The fans were beginning to have to use both hands to count off the number of key players that would probably be out of action for the long term. Mountain View went into the locker room smouldering, and would come out errupting. It made for a colorful beginning of the second half. The colors were green, red and yellow. Green for the grass, yellow for the penalty flags, and red for the flush of anger on Mountain View's faces, especially on the face of Coach Parker who con- tributed a couple technicals to the goings-on. Other than the color-display, the highlight of the third quarter was a 45 yard field goal by Joe Ortiz that cleared the cross bar by about a centimeter. With the score at 17-7, the field was still pushing up yellow flags like marigolds. At one time there were three, for three district penalties and everyone took a vacation while the refs sorted it Out. The final stanza was like the Star Spangled Banner - it brought everyone to his feet, and when it was over, caused everyone to salute Pat Farrell and his Knights. The Toros showed why they were ranked number one. With 3:50 to go, they scored again, and it began to be a game of arithmetic. With the tally reading St. Mary's 17, Mountain View 21, what is a coach supposed to do, try the high-percentage place kick for one, or go for the play and two. The arm-chair QB looks at the numbers, takes out his little pocket calculator and makes his decision - go for two. But, there in his easy chair, he ignores the multi- ple factors, emotional, physical, temporal, and even tempermental, that always influence the on- the-spot decision. As a matter of historical fact, the decision here was to go for one and the kick was good. Score 22-17 Mountain View. Now it was the Knights' turn to show why they ought to be ranked number one. With just 1:42 left on the clock, they capitalized on a Mountain View fumble and scored. And that was enough. Why engage in over kill, in running up the score. The PAT was wide of the mark. Final score 23-22. The Knights walked away from this one dragging the Toros by the tail. AGAINST BROPHY KBRONCOSJ AT PHOENIX COLLEGE SEPT. 24, SCORE 29-0 WIN The football record books are filled with unbelievable upsets by mismatched team who are longtime, bitter rivals. And so, when the Knights went to their old stamping ground at Phoenix Col- lege to meet their longtime rivals Brophy, no one was thinking breather after the grueling first two games. They might have thought that, if this were some other team than Brophy, because the Knights were now ranked number one in the state and Brophy was somewhere off the charts. St. Mary's was flush with back-to-back victories against two numberone-ranked teams, and the Broncos had two very poor showings behind them. Still, statistics are one thing, psychology is another. If you are king of the mountain, everyone will puff themselves up to try to blow you off, and if you're the fastest gun in' the town, some punk will surely ride in to try to change that fact. So in spite of the stats, it looked, in anticipation, like the annual Knight-Bronco game could turn out to be the usual battle. Alas, it was not to be! The Broncos were indeed as inept as their observers said they were. The St. Mary's fans, who had jam-packed the stands for this third straight Friday night were in for a tepid performance this time. This game found Frank Zanzucchi and Shelly Berry back in action, but the action was not spec- tacular. Maybe it was the 90 degree heat, but nothing was working very well for either side. There were blocked punts, sliced PAT'S, intercep- tions, dropped passes, numerous penalties. Still, the Knights looked a lot better than the Broncos. All but 20 seconds of the entire first half was played on Brophy turf. And when Brophy finally crossed the fifty yardline, they made it all the way to the St. Mary's 49. lt is no surprize then that the halftime score was 22-zip. Now, one is accustomed to see ancient rivals like the Broncos reach down into their souls and make a come back. But that did not happen either. The second half was lackluster, and fans found it a good time to visit friends and renew ac- quaintances. The second string, with Tim Mackey as quarterback got some good experience. In the end, the immortal words of the perennial pre-gme prophet, Horace Pieri, at the afternoon assembly really came true. He said, We're gonna kick their butts. Anyway, looking at the bottom line, it has got to be considered a satisfying night for the fans, because it was jackpot, three oranges in a row, victories against Brophy by the Frosh, J.V., and Varsity teams, a triple zero against Brophy for the first time in living memory. The night had started with the traditional rivals having a dozen games a piece. The night ended with St. Mary's making169 hers a baker's dozen. AGAINST PARADISE VALLEY CTROJANSJ AT PARADISE VALLEY, OCT. I, SCORE 37-0. WIN On the morning after the P.V. game the headlines of the Prep Roundup section of the paper said, St. Mary's wallops Paradise Valley 37-O. Some people enjoy witnessing a thrashing, but to a true sportsman, this game was about like seeing a hunter use a bazooka to bag a three- pointer. For tailback Carlton Campbell, the game was gambol. He scored the first four touchdowns. Rohber Brafford got a chance at QB, and the hardest coaching decision of the night was how not to run up the score. After the Trojans CI-3j moved to the S.M. forty yard line in the second quarter, they never again crossed midfield and did not even make a first down. Still no one on our side could feel too bad about the situation. The fans figured that after three bruising battles, two physical, and one psychological, the Knights deserved a romp in the grass. And besides, this game was the first league game of the season and a good one to tuck away, under any conditions. AGAINST PRESCOTT CBADGERSJ AT PRESCOTT, OCT 8, SCORE 28-0, WIN The Knights dropped their third golden egg on Prescott, and in the Badgers own nest tto mix a metaphorj. Again the Knight defense was outstan- ding, forcing the opposition to use only their half of the grass. Only toward the end of the game did the Badgers get well past the 50 yard stripe. The Knights second string gotlsome more field ex- perience in the final coda. Joe Ortiz practiced field goal kicking for two scores. lt was mostly an aerial game which kept the lKnights off the chilly ground a bit. Four bus loads and two mobile homes full of parents made the trip north to witness this whitewash. AGAINST THLINDERBIRD CCHIEFSI AT NORTH, OCT. 15, SCORE I6-6, WIN This was the night that most high school coaches dread -- the interlocking mix of a social and an athletic event - Homecoming Night. The theme was medieval, but the problem for the coach was up to the minute, namely, how to keep the Knights' five game winning streak alive, in spite of the Baloonathon, float parade and halftime pagentry and thoughts of the postgame dance. Before the game, a Thunderbird band, big- ger by half, than the Thunderbird crowd in the stands started off with a sight and sound display. Then, 800 baloons were released to the birds and low flying helicopters, and the Thunderbird team came out in their bright orange helmets, looking for all the world like a conveyer belt at a Sunkist packing plant. Then came the Knights who look- ed to us like just the ones to squeeze the juice out of those oranges. Easier said than done, as it turned out. The Chiefs must have joined the janitors union because they were getting paid for end sweeps all night long. Within three minutes of the opening kickoff, they were threatening, after intercepting a errant St. Mary's pass. They got to the one yard line and were nailed down there by a stubborn Knight defense for three downs. But they finally scored. The punting for both sides was excellent but even the best punter can't do much if the snap from the center sails six feet over his head, as happened to the TB punter in the second quarter. The Knights accepted that gift of two points by recovering it, and went on to add a TD and a PAT to make it I0-6 St. Mary's at the midway point. After the halftime Homecoming ceremonies, both teams tried to out do one another in bobbled 170 punts, fumbles, interceptions, face-masking and other wayward, things. ln the fourth quarter, the Knights got back in gear and scored on a pass from Belles to Buford. They cast that score in Bronze with a valiant goal-line stand near the end of the game to finish the game with a respectable I6-6 victory and the claim to their, number one ranking in the State. AGAINST HORIZON QHUSKIESJ AT NORTH, OCT. 22, SCORE 22-6, WIN It took six plays for the Knights to go sixty yards for their first touchdown against the Huskies of Horizon. But Horizon bounced right back with two play-action passes, one long and one medium to tie it all up at seven a piece. From the first five minutes of this game, you would guess that it would be a close, high-scoring con- test. Half right - high scoring tsix touchdownsj by the Knights, but not close. That first scoring drive by Horizon was the only successful drive they had all night. They fell so in love with the play-action stuff that they kept trying it, too much of a good thing. They got down to the Knight's four yard line where they tried an unlikely flat pass, and Danny Echeveste was there to accept the gift and took it 98 yards the other way for a TD, with Robert Davis laying the key block on the Husky QB. Since that spectacle made it look like Echeveste's night, it was he who later took a lateral from Belles and winged it to Buford from the fifty for another TD. A little later, Matt Mar- tinez picked off another. Horizon pass and zig- zagged it for fifty, only to get nailed on the goal line and have it called back for clipping. That was enough to convince the Huskies to cut out the passing, and they began for a while to come right at the Knights line. But that didn't work either. With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Knights began trying a lot of low percentage stuff in the second half. Stuff like a fake punt with a long pass for a sixty yard gain. Trouble is that stuff like that has a way of sapping concentration. One small indication that happened is when a Knight dropped a lateral and he and the rest of the Knights just walked away from the live ball. Horizon picked it up for free, like food stamps. Even so, Horizon kept giving the ball back through pass interceptions. Eventually, the se- cond and third strings of the Knights saw some action. Altogether, the night was as lopsided as an avocado in profile. AGAINST APOLLO QHAWKSJ AT APOLLO, OCT. 29, SCORE O-0, TIE The Apollo game was ai game for purists and tacticians. It had the minimum action-maximum excitement of a perfectly pitched baseball game. lt was hard, clean, well-executed, defensive foot- ball, with no time wasted in the endzone. And it had its own kind of excitement because of the ten- sion generated between two powerful, well train- ed, and determined teams. There were a lot of tur- novers, but that was due to supurb defense rather than inept offense. Matt Mattinez was king of defense on passes, blocking some, intercepting others. And there was good hard, agile running by Mark Abril and Carlton Campbell, stiff defense by OTfDL Nick Longo, a key interception by Robert Davis, and multiple pass receptions by Buford and Ortiz. But none of it was enough to put any points on the scoreboard. The big disappointment was the kicking, and the opportunities squandered with short, hooked or sliced field goal attempts. It should not go unnoticed that Apollo did not get a single penalty of any kind in the en- tire first half. In the second half, every Knight drive seemed to falter, either because of an untimely penalty or outstanding defense on the part of the Hawks. It was like watching a caged and starving man strain for a slice of bread that was just out of reach. And so it went, down to the final gun, Football is a game of mind, heart and body - not separately, by synchronized. All three were there on the Knights side during that game against the Hawks - it was the synchronization that was off. And for that, the Knights came up with a zero to match the one that Apollo got. Still, there are those who commented after the game, that if it had to happen, that was the best time for it. There were no major injuries, we were still undefeated, it was a non-league game, and the sting of it might just alert us to the big one coming up. So, to put the best light on it, the shutout tie with Apollo was a chip, not a crack, a dent, not a rent, a stumble, not a fall. AGAINST MOON VALLEY QROCKETSJ AT MOON VALLEY, NOV. 5, SCORE 38-14, LOSS It's been a while since the Moon Valley team has lived up to its mascot name. This year, they did it - like a rocket. So you can hardly blame the Moon Valley booster club for a whoopin' it up. lt was Homecoming night for them and that added more color to the Rocket's red glare. Like other public high schools, MV had it's five thousand piece band out, along with twirlers, flaggers, poms, cheers, and other strut-stuffers. They even had fireworks and rockets to fire off when the home team scored. One half expected the Radio City Rockettes to show up at half time. The Knights came to tangle with the modern Rockets in a medieval suit of armor and came away battered if unbowed. The heading in the next day's paper read, Moon Valley Routs St. Mary's 38-I4. The facts are clear enough, Moon Valley ground out 277 yards rushing to St. Mary's I45, most of which came from two big scoring plays. The Knights only managed to get off 35 plays during the entire game. The Rockets possessed the ball about two minutes to every one that the Knights had it. The Knights got only one first down conversion during the whole first half. You get the picture. It was a matter of flawless play against foul-up, flubs and fumbles. Obviously, the momentum was all one way. Right from the start, the Rockets blasted off for 65 yards in seven plays for a score. Eight plays later, they got another one. With 43 seconds to half time, they got another one. The Knights fought back with Matt Martinez finally back in as quarter- back. Chris Buford got a concussion early in the game and thought he was in Memphis teven though he has never been there, and is not even an Elvis fanj and that explains why he un- characteristically dropped several key passes. But the counterattack was not enough, the Rockets were simply outstanding on both offense and defense. As Coach Farrell had said in the pre- game afternoon assembly, l've seen a lot of high school football teams in Arizona, and this team is one of the best I've seen. As things turned out, he was a good judge of quality football. The Rockets went on to become State Champs with a perfect record, and not one score was really close. It is nothing like a disgrace to be bested by the best and, in truth, defeat can teach lessons that victory never will. It is just too bad that it all had to happen in front of a crowd of 8000 fans. AGAINST SLINNYSLOPE QVIKINGSJ AT NORTH, NOV 12, SCORE 21-I4 WIN Like the steward at the wedding feast of Cana, Coach Farrell and his Knights saved the best for last. Coming in to this last regular season and Skyline B game were two very evenly matched football teams. The Vikings had a record of 8-1, 4- 1, the Knights had a record of 7-1, 4-1, both teams having lost to league member Moon Valley. That record left one opening for the play-offs - and two teams aching to fill it. If the Knights lost this one, the GOLD PANTS would stay on the shelf to rot for another year. The issue was seriously in doubt until the final gun in this game. At half time, the Vikings had the benefit of that doubt with a 14-7 lead. And that was fair enough since Sunnyslope had truly dominated the first half. They ran 31 offensive plays to 13 of the Knights, and it was an even more distressing ratio of 9 to 3 in first downs. The Vikings scored on the fourth play of the game with a 53 yard option play, after intercepting our pass and had only one penalty just before half time. The one bright spot for the Knights during the first half was Carlton Campbell's 45 yard TD run on the first possession after their score. Fans who were looking for a monumental turn- around in the third quarter, were in for a disap- pointment for a while. But little by little, the Knights' defense stiffened and the Vikings were forced to punt more. ln spite of a near-block by Tom Hudson, they still seemed to get it well away and leave the Knights with poor field position. But fairy tales are not dead. lt only took the magic wand of a Sunnyslope fumble to turn the big green pumpkin into a chariot of fire. St. Mary's recovered that fumble late in the third quarter at the 47. With the offensive line opening things up for Campbell, the Knights scored a few plays later. It was 14-14. Now it was tense-time. The whole season came down to this. Sunnyslope began their comeback drive. That was cut down cold by a spectacular in- terception by Matt Martinez on the Viking 35 yard line. From there, the ball was advanced to the twenty for a personal foul. And that was close enough for the Knights to smell paydirt. On the next play, Belles pitched the ball back to Camp- bell on the move. But the pitch was high and behind him. Campbell reached up and back, one- handed it, stutter-stumbled, regained his balance, and took it in for the winning TD. There was 3:22 left on the clock. Whoever said time goes fast when you're hav- ing fun and feeling good, wasn't talking about this situation. Those remaining 202 seconds till the end of regular football season seemed to last a month. Another interception and sack by the Knight's tough defense stopped any Viking drive from rolling until, with one minute to go, it was just a matter of Belles collapsing on the ball. Not a very dramatic way to end, you say, but a very, very satisfying one, nonetheless. It was at last a lungfull of pure oxygen after an asthma attack of the tie with Apollo and defeat by Moon Valley. The latin puts it, Finis coronat opus, the end crowns the work. And so it was with this final season game between Sunnyslope and St. Mary's. PLAY-OFF AGAINST SHADOW MOUNTAIN CMATADORSJ AT DEER VALLEY, SCORE 7-6, LOSS And may the best man win is more than a cliche. lt is the expression of a hope rather than a prediction. It is the voice of experience that had learned that, in reality, the best man does not always win. lt is a phrase that keeps company with those other off-quoted sports expressions like l'd rather be lucky than good and The score doesn't tell the story, and On any given night . . No one who would watch the film of this game with the actual scoring plays excised, would believe that the St. Mary's Knights lost it. But, they did. And the Shadow Mountain Matadors won it only because the Knights lost it. The Matadors played almost errorless defensive ball with very few turnovers and that gave them the margin of victory. So Shadow Mountain won its first playoff game in history, and the Knights hung up the gold pants for another year. It happened like this. There were glints of water between the grey-brown tufts of grass on the Deer Valley field on this night of decision. The glints fused into mirror-sheets at the low end of the field. It was, in short, sloppy from the recent heavy rain, condusive neither to sure foot, quick turn nor long gain. Still, time and time again during the game, the Knights were able to move the ball con- vincingly. And on their second possession, they went 41 yards in six plays to score with a twelve yard pass from Belles to fullback Darren Chap- man. But, and note this, Ortiz's kick was low and therefore blocked. That was the last time this night the Knights, would visit the endzone. ln spite of excellent field position, and good execu- tion, they could just not cross that one important line. A penalty, a key mistake, a fumble, a maverick kick, a lapse in concentration, a lag in determination, something always frustrated the goal. And in the end, it was that missed point ear- ly in the game that lingered to haunt its closing minutes. The Matadors got their score in the middle of the second quarter. The drive was ignited by a pass caught by Chris Buford behind scrimmage but jarred loose by the Matadors Charging in like bulls. Shadow Mountain recovered it and took it 41 yards to paydirt. With their successful PAT, the score stood 76. As time wound, down, tension grew and uncer- tainty mounted. The final effort was a double-digit thing. With 2:17 left to play, St. Mary's moved the ball from its own 20 with a 19 yard pass to Buford, and an 18 yard pass to Vince Hernandez. The next pass to Buford was tipped and in- tercepted at the 13. For three tense plays, the Knight defense shut down the Matadors, forcing them to punt with 1:17 to play. The punt went 17 yards. The Knights had one last chance on the matadors 37. Again, the Belles to Buford, then to Hernandez routine worked, until Buford dropped a tough one in the end zone. And so, on the 9 yard line, fourth down, 23 seconds till closing time, Joe Ortiz put boot to leather. But it was not to be. It was all over for the Knights for the 1982 football season. There is some open ground between being satisfied and being unsatisfied. No self-respecting team is ever satisfied with less than the State Championship. But no team that plays with mind and heart as well as body, that uses all of its talent consistently and well, that plays beyond any sound prediction, or reasonable expectation, no team of that caliber and quality need in any sense to feel unsatisfied if they come up short of the top spot. As long as the reach of the team is beyond its grasp, the effort is always worth while and the achievement noble. And that is the final line on the St. Mary's Knight 1982 football team, its coaches, its supporters and sustainers. BASKETBALL SEASON by Jim Qmifh After a slow start the Knights basketball team ended with a 205 record. lt was the second year the Knights did not lose a league game. Coach Gray thought the team did extremely well con- sidering they had only two returning lettermen and injuries to Mark Tovar and Dan Ryan. Coach Gray said, The two highlights of the season were winning the Division for the eighth year in a row, and no one who understands interscholastic sports can quarrel with that judgement. The highlight players were John Bowen, David Morris, who were called the best one-two punch in the state. John Bowen averaged 21 points a game while Morris averaged 20. After two straight losses at the beginning of the season, the Knights came back like gang-busters with 14 straight wins, including two close games with division leader, Paradise Valley. After fighting long and hard the Knights gained the top spot in the division and never let go, but the road to the play-offs wasn't a bed of roses. First they had to get by other division foes. For only their first year in Skyline division, Horizon was burning the courts. But, St. Mary's found no problem get- ting by them. Next came the play-offs. First there was Moon Valley, the game was close but the Knights prevailed in the end. Next there was skyline Divi- sion B Champs Shadow Mountain. Shadow Moun- tain proved to be a difficult foe. The game went in- to overtime and St. Mary's pulled it out and won 54-56. St. Mary's went into the state play-offs with third place over all. The next challenge was South. South lost very little and an unexpected loss to Central in the division play-offs unleashed them against St. Mary's in the first of the State playoffs. The Knights went into the game with a good fighting attitude. The game was close and hard fought, but in the end South won 66-60 and went on to be State Champs.
