On Sept. 8, the St. lVlary's Knights opened the season with a victory over the South Mountain Rebels. The match marked Pat Farrell's debut as head coach for S.lVl., replacing N.A.U. bound Pat Lavin. After leading 7-3 at the half, the Knights found themselves being catered to by lady luck, as four fumbles bounced their way. The Rebel defense put the Knights on ice until the final frame, when Joe Allen ripped for a 59 yard scoring jaunt. Although South scored from 18, nine plays later, S.M. hung on and rode away, 1-0. In game two, victory was not to be. The Knights stumbled into a brick wall in the shape of the Greenway Demons, and got blanked by a 16-0 margin. It was horse-meat time in the city, as St. Mary's met undefeated Brophy Prep in game 113. Unfortunately, someone let the lthorse out of the bag, and the Knights were bucked 30-17. It might have been different St. lVlary's led 17-6 as the third period came to an end, but the Broncos galloped for 24 unanswered points in the final frame, upending the Knights for the first time in five years. The fourth period found the Knights plagued by a series of fumbles, bad snaps, costly errors and mistakes, as a solid Brophy team battled back, capitalizing on Knight misfortunes. St. lVlary's faced the Vikings from Sunnyslope next, and survived with a 19-13 victory. The Knights slashed for 332 yards on the ground, added 82 via air-mail, and held the Viking total to 143 yards to even their season at 2-2. Oct. 6 found the Knights traveling to Nloon Valley, where the green machine thumped the rockets with a 21-14 blasting. St. Mary's scored only in the first half, and held on to outlast any rocket efforts. Thunderbird was next, and the Knights were in high gear. Rolling for 231 on the ground and passing for 59 through the air, S.M. found the going easy and won with a 22-7 final score. St. lVlary's led 9-7 as the final quarter began, and when it had ended, the Knights had scored twice for victory it4. Although St. lVlary's got stabbed in the stats department, they won on the scoreboard at Paradise Valley with a 20-9 victory, lifting their record to 5-2. S.lVl. split its offensive weapons to tally a less than impressive 161 yards total, but succeeded in crossing the goal line when they had to. In contrast, Paradise Valley exploded for 225 rushing, 96 passing, and had six more first downs than the Knights. Oct. 27 marked perhaps the finest effort of the season for the St. Mary's Knights, the green machine arriving at Cortez with an air of quiet confidence and determination. Where there's a will, there is certain victory, as the Knights impressed the nonpartisan crowd with their seemingly unstoppable offensive thrusts and sticky defensive pressure. The Washington Rams confirmed their stature as the if 1 ranked team in the state, stopping St. Nlary's with a 21-17 score. S.M. had visions of an upset in their heads as the final quarter began, but those thoughts faded away when the Knights turned the ball over with only a minute and a half to go. Prescott was a downpour. In a slight drizzle which started in the second half, St. Mary's emptied their bench and their arsenal with a 41-0 blanking of the Badgers. The Knights completed the regular season with seven victories and three defeats, and now play-off time had returned. So did the Brophy Broncos. Wearing the play-off colors of green and gold, St. Mary's bowed to their cross-town rival by a 20-3 margin. Pat Farrell ended his first season at the helm of St. lVlary's Football with a 7-4 season, and anticipates the breaking out of gold pants next year, as returning lettermen are aided by an undefeated J.V. squad. unior Varsity Although 1978 proved to be a year to start off on the wrong foot for the Varsity, it also strengthened hopes for 'lgold in '79 when, for the first time in over twenty years, the traditionally so-so Junior Varsity blazed undefeated to 9-0. The Knights, who on the average outscored their opponents by better than 25 to 2, were scored on only three times, and stifled their foes with six shut-outs. After a cancellation by South Nlountain, St. Nlary's opened the season at Bourgade, and left the Golden Eagles awestruck, 49-O. The first test of the season found the Demons of Greenway on top 6-0, with only a minute expired in the first quarter. True to the test, St. lVlary's scored 25 before time ran out and clinched the victory. So, the scene was set, in game three of the season, St. lVlary's was to face arch-rival Brophy Prep, in a game of special significance for the J's. For it was the Broncos who blemished the Freshmen's record the year before with a tie, and sent last year's J.V. squad into a 14-9 tailspin. To quote the Raven, l'never more. It was truly an inspired ball club that thrashed Brophy that warm Thursday afternoon, and when all was said and done, the score read: St. Mary's 32, Brophy Prep none. Onward it was, and this time the Knights traveled north to Sunnyslope, where S.lVl. showed everyone the proper way to have a Viking funeral, stinging 'Slope 41-0. In the next two games, the l'gang green defense had their job cut out for them. Uncharacteristically, the offense could hardly fizzle let alone explode. First it was Nloon Valley- a game of nerves in which the Knights escaped with a 6-O blanking of the Rockets, and then Thunderbird, where S.lVl., leading 14-7, had to stifle a comeback threat late in quarter number four. Game seven was nearing, and the Blazin' J's realized that each game would become either a stepping stone into history, or a stumbling block into obsurity. Determined to accomplish, the Green Machine thumped Paradise Valley, 26-0. Cortez was it. If any one game of the season characterized the St. NIary's Junior Varsity, the debacle with the quick Colts from Cortez was the one. In a battle of the line of scrimmage, the gutty Knights overcame a 7-0 half-time dehcit and continued their streak with a 12-7 victory. The last game of the season was fought at Washington, where the Rams attempted to deal their foes a mark in the loss column, and fortunately, found themselves victim 316 for the shut-out crew, while the offense rolled up 24 points. And so it was over! The coaches and fans alike had watched as the understudies to the 'lbig V gave 120 !o to earn their goalg from the early autumn mornings stretching on the dew tinged grass at Coronado l'stadium, to the final seconds of the last game when the J's preserved their season. It can be safely stated that somewhere between those moments in time, 30 players discovered the enigma of success- and learned to appreciate it. 1979 lies ahead, and the players of yesteryear march on, fueled with the knowledge obtained in a glorious season, having learned everything from HA to NZ . Powder Puff unior Champs Early in February, the Student Council gave the go ahead signal for trouble, they rallied to defeat the Sophomores in overtime, 8-0. So the scene was set for the school title match, putting the top two classes against each other. In a tough championship game, the Juniors scored early and held on to win, with an 8-0 victory margin. All the girls deserve credit for their efforts, with teamwork getting its share of acknowledgement from the champs- who had a powerful line and a swift backfield.
