Usually this change can be seen by comparing the bewildered freshman to the confident senior .... FQ .ar ff f . . . .The first year of high school can be a little frightening and quite confusing: New people and experiences may seem awesome,even to the most dauntless freshman. It seems sophomores are less strained than freshman with their friends and teachers. Yet they often become restless, being caught up in a period of progression between upper-classmen, and the lowliest freshman .... . . . .As juniors, graver responsibilities are assumed, such as sponsoring the junior prom or attempting the PSAT test. Seniors are a rare breed compared to the other students. They seem glad to be leaving the well-worn niches at St. lVlary'sp yet these same students are reluctant to leave friends and teachers they've known so well .... . . . .However, in spite of age difference among our students, there is present a warmth and closeness, unifying all of us together. The new had to learn and the old get accustom to the atmosphere they were once in before. Everyone was busy registration day and everything was a mess. People here, people there, wanting to get things settled about school and making new friends. Almost everyone dislikes going through registration every year, but in the end it was all worth it. Right? We found ourselves running to find an elusive classroom, to win a relay race, or to escape the tyranny of a senior slave master. We endured a week of plastered hair, red lipstick, and shaving cream just to become a part of St. Nlary's. We discovered the confusion and fun in creating Homecoming 1969. We tested our skills in raising money and producing a skit. Now we're no longer those punky freshmen. We've blossomed a little. In his first year, starting with the carryovers from a 1-9 previous season, he began to instill the winning spirit, based on the word pride. Pride is the word he uses to begin each season. With this and 20 dedicated boys, he knows he can achieve the ultimate goal, State. He began his five year journey of winning with a 4-5-1 record. Coachs' pride was damaged but not stifled. Pride, now you have the word which best describes Coach Doherty. The undefinable word with which Coach Doherty began and carried through every season. The influence of his own pride has become a part of everyone in close contact with him. lt has become his most profound characteristic. The pride of every player is brought out through his masterful guidance. The next year the winning spirit produced a 9-2 season. The next two years became football history in the state of Arizona. A small school playing out of its class, both in population and equipment, took the State Championship with a perfect record 13-0. The year 1968, a 12-1 record, not bad huh! The final year-the peak of dedication was reached. A number of great football players who everyone thought didn't have a chance rambled to a 11-1 record, lead by the greatest Knight of all, Coach Doherty. He possesses the greatest dedication of all. Fielding a team from a group of asthmatic altar boys and having just enough tape to keep them together is dedication! Part of his success lies in the endless hours of behind the scene coaching which consists of an analysis of the opposing team and perfection of his own team. Blind faith best expresses the respect the players hold for him. So inspired by the knowledge of football, they carry out his commands without question. Although a few of the above characteristics are found in many coaches, the essence of Coach Doherty's success has been his ability to instill these characteristics in his players. Under his guidance the reputation the school had so tediously built over the years was immeasurably enhanced. Kneeling: Mark Fredlake, Mr. Pieri, Jim Brodie. The St. lVlary's varsity basketball team showed vast improve- ment and great promise during the '69-'70 season. Eight games were chalked-up in the winning column while they dropped eleven. Coach Paul Goebel brought new life to a team mired in last place in the Skyline Division. Under Coach Goebel's direc- tion the Knights made some noise in the division race and were not eliminated until the last two games of the season. Led by seniors Sal Balderas, Pat Farrell, Bob Kennedy, and Steve Vaughn, St. lVlary's swept both games from Cortez, Washington, Paradise Valley, and lVloon Valley. ln the three games with Flagstaff and Glendale they lost by a total of ten points. The outlook is bright for next year with seven returning lettermen and three starters. The Seniors girls wrapped toys and many of the students came to the center a few days before Christmas to help out with the program planned for them. The purpose of this trip was to learn of the culture of the people of Mexico, to learn their language better and to become more and better acquainted with their customs. In his senior year, he worked as managing editor of the Knight. John also was an active member of the chess club, placing third in the State Chess Finals. 161 While retaining the highest academic standing in her four years at S.lVl., Linda still found time for other activities. Each week she could be seen at the football and basketball games adding pep to the pom line. Linda was an active member of Girl's Council for three years and Secretary of The National Honor Society. Patsy has accomplished many deeds in her four years ,at St. lVlary's. She was a delegate to Girls State, Frosh and Junior class Vice-President, and she was also Student Body Vice-President. She sounds very deserving of this honor. Pat Farrell proved worthy of the honor of Knight of the Year through his all-round activities. As a freshman he was class treasurer, and his sophomore and senior years served as class president. He was also a member of National Honor Society. During the summer of '69 he was a delegate to Boy's State. He received the Citizen of the Month Award for November. Pat also excelled in football, baseball, and basketball.
