During the past ten years St. Mary's has been favored in hav- ing as its physics and chemistry teacher, social and Student Council moderator Father Blaise Cronin, O.F.M. Students have found that his aid is not limited to only scholastic matters for he is always ready to help one no matter what his problem be. For all these things we are truly grateful and as a small token of our appreciation we, the El Cabellero Staff of 1958, dedicate this annual to you. ,V air, V Q F 1-...L r 'Q an X' 'Xl Most Reverend FRANCIS J. Placing second in float competition, displaying a most unique and an entertaining assembly, the Juniors have combined fun and work to produce a closely knit unit of a class working together. The success ot all their endeavors can be atributed to their acceptance of responsibility. Under the leadership ot a girl president, no distinction of sexes proved most profitable- Individually, and as a class, the Juniors are really going places to make St. Mary's a success while they are here. Our '60 class has really shown what courage is. Many disappointments have faced them, yet they've never given up. Hard work, unity, and all that is need- ed to produce a winner in class competition had seemed to accomplish nothing but final places. When the best acts from each assembly were given to the Mothers' Club, the Sophomore Class, still in a fighting spirit, took first and second places with the most novel acts. By never giving up even in time of failure, they have proved to the entire student body how true these words are, lf there's a will, there's a way. Good luck for a terrific Junior year! The winter months find Saint Mary's band music cheering the teams at the foot- ball and basketball games. With the beginning of spring the marching band becomes a concert band whose presentations are enioyed by all. Under the able direction of Mr. Henry Ketterer, this group is certainly a fine asset to our school. Through them the different classes, clubs, and organizations present their plans for approval by the fac- ulty. The various representatives are molded into a unit responsible for the social side of the school year. STUDENT SENATE The Student Senate of Saint Mary's is that group responsible for the enforcement of school rules. The Senate is com- posed of boys chosen for their scholastic ability and leadership qualities. The new members are elected by the Sen- ators themselves and approved by the faculty. GIRLS' COURT This year has shown rise of a new honor club. Parallel to Student Senate, the Girls' Court, under the direction of Fath- er Alexander. The qualifications are stiff and members are conscientious of their duties. This year Junior and Senior Student Council members were chosen to be the initial members of this club. S. D. S. Supply the Demand for the Supply! This is the modesty club to which most Saint Mary's girls belong. The fight for decent clothes and entertainment is initiated here. The S. D. S. book drive, First Saturday Rosaries, and Fashion Show are main proiects. S. D. S. keeps the girls posted on new styles, decent shows, and articles concerning their ideals. CATHOLIC STUDENTS MISSION CRUSADE The purpose of the Catholic Students Mission Crusade is to encourage prayer, study, and sacrifice for the missions. Their activities consist of study club work, making altar linens for the missions, and teaching religion on Sunday mornings to public school children. An eagerly anticipated event is the trip in August to the National Convention at Notre Dame, Indiana. DRAMA The aim of the Saint Mary's Drama Club is to create an interest and desire in dramatics and to attain an understanding of all the phases of theatrical work. ' , NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE This newly organized club, under the direction of Father Barnabas, is affiliated with the national organization. To qualify for membership, a student must meet the national standards required. Through participation in tournaments he may gain the sufficient number of points. Activity in speech tournaments in this region has established a fine reputation for this club of which all the students may be proud. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Saint Mary's has once more reached national recognition through affiliation with this honor society. To belong, a stu- dent must maintain a 2 average throughout his high school year and never receive a 4 on his semester report card. lt is a fine thing that we can have a group of this type for the real students of Saint Mary's. MATH CLUB The purpose of this organization is to compare ideas with others who have an active interest in the varied and fasci- nating topic of math. The members, who maintain a 2 average in school subiects, learn more about math as well as the history of it. The weekly meetings bring to the fore many interesting facts and problems. Among their activities is included a demonstration meeting for high school math teachers. This group is also a member of the National Mathematical Honor Society. KEY CLUB This group is a service organization sponsored by the Phoenix Kiwanis Club. The requisite for membership is to be a leader in the school. They aid in such community proiects as the Teens Against Polio, and the Luke Air Force Open House. J. R. C. The Junior Red Cross, under the direction of Sister Mary Phyllis, is very active at Saint Mary's and in the community. Their proiects include: bake sales, tray favors, visiting Valley hospitals, and work at the Red Cross Chapter House. GLEE CLUB Always entertaining with their fine singing the Glee Club is a popular group at Saint Mary's. This year, under the able direction of Dr. Ronald Boisvert, they have pleased many Valley audiences. Composed of Junior and Senior students, their singing talents have contributed greatly to our assemblies. BAND LETTERMEN The Band Lettermen Club is an honorary division of Saint Mary's Musical Knights. The officers are Howard Bell, Presi- dent, Sherrie Ulmer, Vice-President, Judy Feight, Secretary-Treasurer. Z' Above: Man! What a crazy contraption!
