Sodality Meetings The innovations this year also included the four- cycle meeting plan. The first phase is the cell group meeting, which is modeled on the Communist cell group concept. These groups, consisting of eight to fifteen members and a faculty moderator, attempt to make the Sodality commitment relevant to the in- dividual's life. The next phase is the spiritual meet- ing through which ideas on the spiritual nature of the sodalists are conveyed. The third step is another cell meeting. The academies round out the program. These meetings have as their general theme the social aspects of life while instilling a sense of com- munity in the entire group. Guest speakers from Denver make these presentations. This plan has been successful this year due to the response it has received. odalit Council The sodality council, made up of the student cell leaders, officers, and director, function as an advisory group in deciding Sodality activities and policy. They meet every Monday to discuss topics of general concern and present suggestions for consideration by the moderators. The Big Red out-hit, out- fought, and out-hustled their adversaries, al- though they were smaller, slowed by injuries, and hampered by inexperience. The gritty Raiders opened the fast-moving season with a heartbreaking loss to Cheyenne Central, in the last nineteen seconds, 19-13. The defending champs came right back with league wins over Holy Family, 35-O, St. Francis, 21-12, Machebeuf, 12-6, and St. Joseph, 25-O. The St. Francis and Machebeuf contests were highlighted by a brilliant second half, come-from-behind surges to victory. Then a determined St. Mary's ball club, unable to defeat Regis in the history of what has been a long, heated rivalry, stopped the Raiders, 28-7. But again the rugged Raiders proved their mettle as champions by overpowering Cathedral, Mt. Carmel and Annunciation in lopsided victories. Then came the grand finale of the season-Regis vs. Mullen. The heavily favored Mustangs, outweighing the Raiders thirty-five to fifty pounds per man, managed a 21-7 victory for the DPL title. But the Raiders were not about to give up after this bitter defeat as they went the rest of the season undefeated. This was only accom- plished by the offensively undeveloped Raiders through shear desire and exceptional coaching by Mr. Gibbs. By the end of the season the Raiders had gained enough experience to become title contenders for the upcoming state tournament in running up a very respectable 15-3 league, and 20-3 season record. Mid-game strategy. Crisp, sharp, stoic cheers was their rule? tate Tournament Bob Langfield absorbs a flying block. Offense is instinct, defense is concentration. With these timely words Mr. Gibbs summed up the magnificent effort exerted by the Regis Raid- ers during the T965 State Catholic Basketball Tournament. Working their way to the champion- ship, the Raiders held opponents to an average of 27 points per game: Annunciation was stopped cold at 28 and Pueblo Catholic had trouble scor- ing their 26. These were tremendous exhibitions of determination on defense and the will to win, since this year's team was admittedly not blessed with an over abundance of natural basketball ability.-But their finest effort was yet to come. The horn sounded. The pressure was on. It was time to pit the stingiest defense against the hottest offense: Regis vs. Mullen. In the most bitterly contested battle of the year, the Red Raiders, with the help of Regis scorekeepr Simon O'Hanlon detecting an official scorer's error and thus depriving Mullen of a crucial free-throw, put an abrupt halt to the Mustang scoring stampede, 38-37, while capturing their second straight state championship in the first double overtime game of tournament history. Down by seven with five minutes to play, it looked as if the Raiders were destined to fall. But the diligent Regis ballhand- lers were not about to give up as they fought to a miraculous come back, behind the shooting of three-time All-state forward Rich Schraeder and backcourt general Bob Langfield. Also, the de- fense of All-state Scott Spinney on the opposing teams star shooter was magnificent. At the end of regulation time the hustling Raiders had tied the score, 35-35. In the first overtime neither team scored as the Raiders stalled, playing for one shot by Schraeder which just rimmed out. In the second overtime, with 1:36 left on the clock Schraeder popped in a twisting twenty foot iumper. Seconds later Rich added the first of a one-and-one free-throw at- tempt to make the score, 38-35. Mullen managed to score only one basket out of many desperate attempts, iust before the wild finish. Schierburg's last second shot is choked. Up in desperation! The calm before the storm. Thus ended a great year for a determined team and a great coach. After this unforgettable finale, it was termed by Mr. Gibbs, himself, as the finest championship he had ever won, and by tournament officials as the most outstanding coaching effort in the history of state parochial basketball play. 129 i X Q, - 'Sly'-'T - f L to R Coach Giarratanno B Mclntosh T Dumas F Kelley J Fanning, J.Grittin, G.
