Many issues—school spirit, the dress code, the power of student council, and even prayer at commencement—prompted storms of letters to the editor of the Daily Thing. Better assemblies on drug usage and safe driving habits, and the introduction of SCHS ' s first literary magazine, A Punctured Drum, made students more aware of the contemporary scene. Even the educational goals at SCHS underwent a change with the intro¬ duction of specific behavorial objectives. No new buildings went up this year, but SCHS did change—in a big way—for the better. ' Wfc Young faces form new portfolio of leaders 1 . The hope of any civilization lies in the coming generation—those people who will constructively revise and build upon that which is set down. We are the people who will make these changes in the coming few years. We see the privilege; we rec¬ ognize the responsibility, and we are introducing our new ideas today. 1) Terry Tate plans for the future. 2) Scott Fortney buys a yearbook after seeing the sneak previews at a CHARLEMO assembly. 3) Iris Hollrah decides she is not ready for the re¬ sponsibility of a teacher yet. 4) Debbie Kent models the new look— long hair. 5) Steve Stipes furthers his knowledge of music. 6) Steve Cearley and Kurt Hammes present their views on the dress code to Student Council. 7) Tom Schaberg and Jayne Ermeling meditate after class is over. 4 . i This generation is thoughtful, involved If there be one flaw in man ' s nature against which this generation campaigns, it is apathy. Being involved has become our bag . Active members of organizations participate in club ac¬ tivities. Student Council members serve as the students ' elected governmental body. Concerned faculty members offer help and advice, and every student shows his concern when he applies him¬ self to his studies or tries to maintain the excellent reputation of our student body. 1) Pat Ruff waits for a ride and reflects on her day at SCHS. 2) Gunther Emiein, delivering a speech at the fall sports assembly, represents SCHS ' s involvement in world affairs. 3) Ida Ca- rionon and Nancy Bauman work together on assignments after a large-group testing session. 4) Richard Ford concentrates on the action on the field as he watches a football game from the press box. 5) Student Council members listen intently to speaker who holds the floor at council meeting. 6) Reid Bronson glances through a mag¬ azine while working on posters for FTA. 7 We have energy to spare This generation, with all its ideas and hopes to change our world, would wallow in uselessness without energy. Energy flows freely from this gener¬ ation. Combined with hope, it creates an undefeat- able characteristic of man that shows itself most boldly during our youth. Channeled into con¬ structive endeavor, it makes reality out of unreal goals. 1) Bob Davis and Dave Davis yell, SENIORS at one of the three publications assemblies in Septem¬ ber. 2) Mike Clark, Jim Lloyd, Ken Tipton, Bennie Myers, Paul Bekebrede, and Rick Adams work on ROTC ' s entry in the Homecoming float contest. 3) janita Tevis executes a not quite perfect somersault at the homecoming pep rally. 4) B-team cheer¬ leader Kathy Thoelke exhibits her cheering talents at the fall sports assembly. 5) juniors give seniors on the other end of the rope a workout as they pull on to victory. 6) Determination shows in Scott Moore ' s face as he pushes on at a cross country meet. I We spend hours in concentrated study No changes in our world can be made without a knowledge of the problems in¬ volved and the methods available to correct them. This knowledge comes to us through our teachers. Our generation seems to have a tremendous appetite for this knowledge. Whether this is because we want knowledge for the sake of knowledge or for practical purposes, we still spend more and more time in study. 1) John Breeden learns how to handle a skillet in the new boys ' food service class. 4 . 2) John Thompson goes through a routine form-filling ceremony. 3) Mrs. Veita Jo Hampton talks to Randy Ferber about year¬ book problems while Roger McCoy works on physics problem in physics class. 4) Mike Benson types as he listens to tape adjusted to suit his needs in Business Education class. 5) Mike Neihoff concentrates on test ques¬ tion, an experience we all go through. 6) John Breedon contributes to panel discus¬ sion in ROTC. H ' l; r 5 . ♦ I w • U « n V 9 M . A , ! Zt • -- • 11 Rubber forms the soul This may be the Age of Aquarius to some, but it is the age of mobility to all. Cars have become an integral part of almost everybody ' s life, especially the teenager ' s. We have been raised with cars and have come to regard them as a materialization of one ' s personality. 12 3 . of SCHS mobility 1) Peggy Reiser jumps on bus after long day of classes. 2) Bill Stuckenschneider rolls away from school in his Mustang. 3) Mark Grimmer climbs out of his car for another day of school. 4) Mike Peyton sneers at pedestrians. 5) Cycles in front of boy ' s gym reflect sunlight and the age of mobility. 6) Jim Droste, Mark Silverberg, and Tom Walker listen to state troopers at TASC ' s motor¬ cycle safety course. 7) Mag wheels emphasize the spirit of competition. We all find time to do our own thing Amidst final exams, club meetings, and seventh hours, we all find time or make time to relieve pres¬ sure. ' ' Our own thing is the result. 1) SCHS pep band members perform at fall sports assembly. 2) SC Pirate stops Pattonville Pirate at homecoming game. 3) Part of SCHS ' s ROTC unit marches in Homecoming parade. 4) Students dance to the music of the Jay Barry Revue at Homecoming dance. 5) Jim Baggerman gets into proper state of mind before a cross country meet. 6) Pat Higgins shows the easiest way to do your thing —let your hair grow. 7) Pirate fans yell for more at pep rally. 8) Brian Statman, Mike Earney, Harry Fry, and Randy Tong watch Homecoming parade from Red Cross building steps. p i i! An active student council, re¬ sponsive to the needs and wants of its student body, maintains the balance of power between stu¬ dents and administration. SCHS ' s student council demonstrated its activity by planning the Home¬ coming and Sweetheart dances, conducting all school elections, and selling popcorn at home foot¬ ball and basketball games. The council ' s involvement is shown in its persistent attempts to find a fair and practical solution to the dress code problem. Council members had to sacrifice time and effort and often personal wants to serve their student body. The junior class is responsible for the planning of the junior-senior prom.
