Our teachers and school staff taught us to say clearly what we think, and we often did. As a result, we of- ten argued with each other, but when it came to the critical times, our class showed that it could lead the whole student body into forging a surprising unity. A lot of our teachers seem proud of us for learning to be so articulate, even though it has made us more difficult to live with, and they have encouraged us to be influential in every community we belong to in the future. These teachers and staff members have helped us to ,see visions and dream dreams of what we can become between now and that Last and Final Graduation! It's time to put into practice what we have been taught: Make the best of yourselves, treat others as you want them to treat you, remember that God is always there for you; exercise your rights as a citizen, help those less fortunate than yourselves, and remember that friendship is more important than almost anything else in life. To our classmates we say: Remember your dreams and follow those dreams. Life won't always be easy, but remember the encouragement you got from your teachers and friends during the last four years, and when you are tempted to give up, hear those words again: 'We know you can do it! Go for it! ' We are the hard- working Juniors Melissa Koplin, Brenda Sharpe and Patty Schweickert look for food that will preserve their girlish figures. We accept all of the teenagers who qualify for our school, and try to teach them lifetime skills in how to learn. We share our own experience, and help young people to discover their own talents and limitations, to overcome their apathy and develop their poten- tial. Our guide in this struggle is Jesus and His Good News of God's love and forgiveness, with all of its challenge and encouragement. We begin a work that is not finished here, and so we always wonder how our former students are doing. We welcomed them as squiggling freshmen, hum- bled them as over-confident sophomores, worked them hard as juniors, polished them as seniors, and then, just as they became concerned and thoughtful young adults, we graduated them with our prayers. But we hope that our alumni and alumnae know that they are always welcome at Saint Bede. And we hope that they, too, will make their lives a labor of love. Father Alfred Scheidler O.S.B. is typical of our flexi- ble faculty: he serves in the mathematics department as a geometry teacher, meets the public as our ticket manager, and provides hospitality as Abbey guest- master. 50 The English department is chaired by Father Allen Mat- tingly O.S.B. who teaches Shakespeare and Essay Com- position. Ken Anderson serves in the same depart- ment, teaching grammar and literature to the freshmen. He also coaches varsity bas- ketball. 51 Father Andrew Snyder O.S.B. teaches classes for the religion department, and lays great stress on prayer and meditation. 52 Faculty of 1987 A man of action is the only way to describe Father Arthur Schmit O.S.B. He contributes to the foreign language department with his courses in French and in German, and with the trips he leads to Europe between semesters. Fr. Arthur also moderates the student gov- ernment and the men's club, organizes charity for the poor of Appalachia, and serves on the school board. S3 Our Teachers at work Carol Baness chairs our social studies department, and teaches lively history courses on the sophomore level. If there is a history fair or a trip to Springfield, she is usually a vital part of it. 54 Brother Bede Schuda O.S.B. fol- lows the religion department cur- riculum in teaching his junior classes. He also serves as admis- sions director of the Academy. 55 Father Bernard Horzen O.S.B. heads the science department, and also teaches in the mathematics department. He is a leader in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science, and the coach of our Scho- lastic Bowl teams. Faculty 1987 Tim Burgess is new to our faculty. He is teaching science as well as physical education, and is an assistant coach. 56 John Bellino is chairman of the physical education department, and coaches varsity football as well as baseball. He teaches world history to our freshmen. 57 Bonnie Claudnic is a new member of our mathematics department. She teaches algebra on several levels. 58 Faculty in action Teresa Connolly is our school nurse, and she teaches four health classes. Broth- er Dominic Carra- mone O.S.B. is drama director, and is men- tor for a speech class. 59 This Faculty has lots of experience The mathematics department enjoys the perspective of Fr. Eugene Lauer O.S.B. who has added the mastery of computers to his repertoire of skills to teach. 60 A contributor to both the English and Religion depart- ments is Fr. Gabriel Bullock O.S.B. who teaches a mar- riage course, guides seniors through the Iliad and the Odyssey, and moderates the yearbook. 61 Faculty 1987 Tammy Hamilton is our music direc- tor. She teaches classes in choral singing and dir- ects the band and the annual musi- cal. Fr. Harold Datzman O.S.B. teaches several classes for the religion department. He is also Prior of the Abbey community. The head of the St. Bede art department is Fr. Joseph Heyd O.S.B. who likes to keep in touch with former students whom he has taught draw- ing, painting, ceramics and sculpture, as well as silk screen and engraving techniques. 63 Teachers provide varied views Dorothy Kuffel is head of the business department. She has many years of ex- perience teaching bookkeeping, busi- ness math and typing. 64 Frank Milisitch teaches German and Spanish for our for- eign language de- partment. Bernie Moore serves in both the mathemat- ics and the business departments, and is one of our athletic directors and coaches. He is also a member of the school board. 65 Mentor mox i e Patient perseverance has equipped Father Philip Davey O.S.B. for serving as coach of our girls' baseball team, head of the religion department and novice master of the abbey. He also oversees the homeroom system, and chairs the forma- tion committee. 66 Faculty 1987 Jim Roberts is a member of our science department, and teaches biology. Fr. Roger Corpus O.S.B. has found a home in the art department where he teaches photography and film-making. He is also currently moderator of the mothers' club. 67 Instructors who enjoy teaching Frank Rossi has been busy for many years teaching our stu- dents to drive safely. Fr. Sam- uel Pusateri O.S.B. teaches American history, geography and U.S. government courses for the social studies depart- ment. He is also our school chaplain. 68 The Faculty of 1986-1987 One of the pillars of the English department is Jean Stanmar, who teaches grammar, literature and vocabulary to our sopho- mores and juniors. 69 Faculty 1987 Gwen Walsh is a member of the English department, where she teaches journal- ism and moderates the school newspaper, the Se- dan Bruit. She also has high hopes for producing a liter- ary magazine written and il- lustrated by students. 70 Learning the Lingo Leann Wilcoxen is head of our for- eign language department, and teaches five classes of Spanish stu- dents. She is also moderator of the newly-formed Spanish Club. 77 The Faculty relaxes At a party to celebrate the end of the term, the staff and faculty danced the Limbo and the Shout with characteristic energy. 72 Top row, from far left, Tracey Smyser; middle, Mrs. Hollerich, Mr. and Mrs. Baness; right, Fr. But the juniors had done very well as sophs, and they gave the needed extra confidence. After seven victories, we were rated fourth in the state by the coaches' poll. We tied the record for most wins held by several other teams of the Academy. Coach Bel- lino was proud that we worked hard enough to compete in the state play-offs: a first for Saint Bede football. We had confidence in our eyes when we took the floor for the first game of the '86-'87 season as the Basketball Bruins. Maintaining this confidence with a lot of hard work then enabled us to bring borne the titles of the Peoria Heights Thanksgiving Tournament and the Hall Holiday Tourney, and to close 1986 with a 9-2 record. The new year brought the harder part of our schedule, and some injuries. Wc played well enough to have a 15-9 record as we headed into Regional play. Even without our senior scoring leader, Joe Perona, who suffered a fractured cheek bone, we pulled out two big victories and made it to the Regional finals. But the Bruin magic just couldn t quite do it one more time, and we were nipped by a good Hall team despite a strong performance from senior John Ptak. We were left with a sense of real accomplishment, including the defeat of old rival L-P twice this season for the first time since 1973, despite the overall youth of our ball club. Coach Anderson seemed to be proud of us: he called us his blue-collar team because we worked hard for everything we got. The Perona brothers contributed a great deal to this year's varsity. Joe Perona, at left and below, was leading scorer with 19.5 points a game be- fore his cheek-bone was fractured. His younger brother, Jim, shown below, was like glue hold- ing the team together. Joe Perona was a candidate for All- State recognition. Finish second in Soph Tourney The Sophomore team finished with 77 wins, and 10 losses. Six of the latter were decided by less than six points, so these guys were con- tenders. Front row, left to right, they are Mike DeAngelo, Geoff Sle- vin, Ryan King, Chris Clancy; second row, Coach Bernie Moore, Jeff Fabish, Errol White, Jim Barto, Eric Du- chaine and John Story. John Bellino was coach. 74 7 Girls' Basketball: Young team prepares well The Lady Bruins had a respectable re- cord of 9-14 for the varsity and 11-2 for the frosh-soph.
