Saint Bede Academy Peru, Illinois 61354 Volume 41 Opening 3 4 Division Bedan Life Life equals existence, but Bedan life equals vitality and Bruin immortality — to be remembered and celebrated through immortality. Bruin vitality — active strength of mind and body, all time, through the solidness of spirit, through exacting academics and extra curricular activities. Division 5 The Week for Bruin Spirits! 6 Spirit Day Opposite page, top left: Determined to make it to first base. Fr. Henry viciously connects. Top right: I want you. Mark Boehm, to bid on this item! Lower left: Stand still and say cheese—Simon says! Lower right: Fr. Kevin gets his revenge, as seen in this egg citing photo! This page, above: Bob Dudek and Gigi Charbonneau demonstrate how they too can ‘roll out the barrow. The beginning of the 1982 Spirit Week saw girls in skirts and bobby socks, and boys in letter sweaters; spunky 60's costumes. A school mass was held on Wednesday of the week as a spirit strengthener for upperclassmen and faculty and a welcome for freshmen. Thursday was the traditional Bedan Spirit Day. Though revised and modified since the mudhole days, it still includes the favorites: the auction, volleyball and softball games, tug-of-wars, Simon Says, and good, clean (?) Bruin fun. To conclude the week, there was a pep rally on green and white day. Spirit Day 7 8 Homecoming Homecoming: An Ancestral Celebration Above left: Past Bedans are welcomed by smilies on a sign. Clubs Special Events 25 jcn 26 Division Sports Sports have always been an outlet for Bruin spirit, whether it's a team coming from behind for an unexpected victory, or a rowdy crew unleashing their pride through their vocal cords. St. Bede sports are muscular football players and charming cheer- leaders. They're chipper golfers and vicious volleyballers. They're slam dunking basketboys and dribbling basketgirls. They're baseball men slugging the ball without batting an eye- lash, and softball women catching the fly that's been swatted by the opponents. They're attractive girls and dashing boys that sprint down the track. In short, Bruin sports are athletes of valor, strength, charm, and power. Division 27 John Levisay exhibits a coach's dream — eyes down and arms stiff. Dave Panizzi powerfully drives a tee-off. John “Bird Cwik devotes full concentration to his tee-off on the back nine. Girls’ BKB Makes History The St. Bede girls' basketball team fin- ished it’s first year of existence with a sur- prising record of 9-5. The Carlsons, Coach Don and player Dawn, were major creators of the success script. Mr. Carlson trans- formed terribly inexperienced girls into a formidable team, and Dawn shared scoring honors with Joanne Renkosik. But what’s most exciting is that the team will go nowhere but up, considering two of the starters were freshmen, and the entire young bench saw playing time. Below: Two defenders are defenseless against Dawn Carlson’s offensive maneuvers. Right: Nothing fazes Tina Clancy as she makes a long distance jump shot. Far right Joanne J.R. The 1982 St. Bede Bruins were a much better team than their record indicated, and in evidence of the abundance of the talent on the squad, St. Bede placed eight individuals on the Com Belt first and second all-conference teams. The phrase What if' looms large in the heads of many fans, friends and players. “What if we would've held Central Catholic? What if we would have stopped Olympia's two big plays?” There are more, you can be sure, but the things that happened are all part of the game. Someone has to win, and someone has to lose. Dave Panizzi led the team in rebounding and scoring, averaging just over 20 points per game. Above: Emotions overflow as the Bruin girls psych up for a decisive third game. This year, drastic changes were noted in the talent, sophistication of play, and record of the Bruin varsity spikers. Mew coach Mrs. Gus Goskusky was greatly responsible for the improvements. Gus introduced the team to the 6T offense, which allowed for greater utilization of the setting and spiking talents of the Bruin girls. St. Bede boasted the experience of four returning senior starters and the natural ability of the juniors. However, the most striking reason for the team's triumph was its over whelming determination and desire to win. Making up the 1982 varsity volleyball team were: back row, left to right Coach Joanne Renkosik, and Dawn Carlson. Front row, left to right: MaryLudford. Ann Vicki Goskusky, Cathy Bichl, Eve Jasiek, Betsy Kunkel, Stephanie Zeman, Wayland, Kelly Grace. Colleen Koster, Allison Draper, and Lisa Miedzianski.
