THE '59 FOOTBALL STORY SAINTS 13 BALDWIN PARK 13 The Saints opened their 1959 football season in a thrilling 13-13 tie with Baldwin Park, in a contest which saw both teams scoring in the final minute of play. Baldwin Park scored first, but the Saints quickly evened things up, when sopho- more Dave Adlesh passed 25 yards to Tyrone Price for a TD. The 13-7 lead the Saints received, when Mike Spencer scored from the one, didn't last long as Baldwin Park tied the game 18 seconds later. SAINTS 19 COMPTON 19 Playing the eventual winners of the tough Coast League, the Saints again had to be content with a tie. Held scoreless in the first half the Saints tied the game when Tom Corcoran recovered a Compton fumble in the end zone. During the fourth quarter a Compton kickoff was returned 80 yards by Homer Williams to set up the next score provided by Price from the three yard line. Price also accounted for the Saints final seven points, scoring the last touchdown and kicking the all-important extra point. SAINTS 7 LOYOLA 6 The Saints got off on the right foot in their Catholic League opener as they defeated the Loyola Cubs 7-6. The Saints lone touchdown came on a 12 yard strike from Rick Sanchez to Marty Johnson. Tom Corcoran kicked the decisive extra point. Instrumental in the win was the Banshee defense led by Elias Garcia, which stopped two late Loyola drives. Spencer l36l churns for yardage with O'Hara l55l close behind. Johnson H311 and Corcoran 1421 hound the enemy. SAINTS 20 NOTRE DAME 12 Homecoming Week at St. Anthony's was topped off as the Saints defeated Notre Dame 20-12 before a capacity crowd. Ty Price provided the fireworks in going for two touchdowns. Bob Goodman closed the scoring on a one yard plunge, fol- lowing a brilliant 35 yard punt return by Dennis Courte- marche. Singled out for his fine line play was tackle Dennis Martinek. SAINTS 40 L. A. JORDAN 7 The Saints offense came into its own at this time as L. A. Jordan went down to defeat 40-7 in a non-league contest. Each St. Anthony touchdown was scored by a different player as Price, Spencer, Sanchez, Williams, Adlesh, and Corcoran contributed. The Saints' cause was assisted by the fact that three of these touchdowns followed Jordan fumbles recovered by Martinek, Montenegro, and Garcia. SAINTS 19 SERRA 7 St. Anthony remained undefeated by downing Serra High of Gardena 19-7, but the price of victory was great as Jim Ri- vard was iniured and lost for the rest of the campaign, when he scored on a 30 yard run. The other Saint touchdowns were again supplied by Ty Price on a 24 yard pass interception and a dazzling 48 yard run. Matt Lorge was again the spirit of the Saint line, SAINTS 0 PIUS X 25 Some untimely fumbles and lack of offensive punch led to the Saints' first setback of the season, 25-0 against Pius X. Despite the overwhelming score the Saints never gave up, particularly Little Tom Gausepohl who ran hard all night. SAINTS 14 CATHEDRAL 6 The Saints got back on the victory trail the following week by turning back the speedy Spooks from Cathedral. Dave Adlesh threw a perfect 17 yard strike to Price for the first TD. In the second quarter the Saints used eleven plays in going 91 yards for its second score. The drive was capped by Price when he broke loose for 22 yards. This victory sparked the Saints' hopes of gaining a CIF playoff berth as Mt. Carmel was tied by Serra 6-6. SAINTS 7 MT. CARMEL 18 The Saints' title dreams were shattered by Mt. Carmel as the rock-ribbed Crusader defense proved too much for the fight- ing Saints. The Saints out gained Mt. Carmel 185 to 161 yards, but promising drives were stopped on the Crusader's 36, 25, 19, and 38 yard lines. The Saints' lone score came with the clock showing 10 seconds remaining in the game, when Adlesh clicked with Corcoran on a 5 yard payoff pitch. And so ended a highly successful season for our Saints. Howard De Nike
