Coach Jim Higgins thought that the l982- 83 year would be one of the team 's best. The varsity softball team was looked on by many as being one of the top contenders for the state title. A strong pitching staff contri- buted to the Cougars might. head- ed by Denise Adams and Kris Liechty, who were two of the top four pitchers in the Southern Divi- sion. The J. V. softball team had an out- standing year. The team went un- defeated for the season. Coach Al- ice Bishop was very pleased with the outcome of the season and the Ditty performance of the girls. As with the varsity, many long hours were spent practicing, which proved to be invaluable. The team set out this year with the objective of winning Divisionals. To accomplish this goal they would have to defeat their strongest op- ponents, Salpointe and Cholla. The varsity squad consisted of thirteen girls, seven of whom were returning lettermen. Coach Higgins explained that this year 's team was very fast and had a strong defense. But the driving force behind the team was the ever-present Cougar spirit. 8. Varela -1 --QL--N... B.
