Civitan and Chess Clubs accomplished a lot r. Civitan members accom- plished a lot during the year. The club is a non-profit organiza- tion that was designed to heh: the less fortunate. The members held many fund rais- ing events. They were in charge of the Santa Grams which were dis- tributed throughout the school, sold Halloween candy and held the annual 'Mile of Pennies , which was held at a track in Scottsdale. With the help of the handicapped, Civitan members aid out as many pennies as they could in order to see how many times around the track the pennies would go. There were monthly dances held at The Tucson Park and Recreation Craft Center. The dances provided enjoyment for the mentally retard- ed and helped the members relate with them better. Ci vitan members played a major role in the Pima County Special Olympics. f s r an X. 1 at CHESS C L UB. Kenny Morrow, Robby Yap. Donald Barnett, Andy Saly won. Missing: Gavin Wharton. Jr. Civitan received district awards for best campus project, the most money raised, and best club advisor who was Connie Ann Sanders. LaRee Simmons, the president of the club, said their main goal was to get recognition through- out the school and to improve the communities' attitude to- wards the mentally and physical- ly handicapped. Other officers in the club were Vice-President Suzanne Crom- well, Secretary Julie Aldrich. and Treasurer Russel Scaramella. The Chess Club did an outstand- ing job this year in the all- around. They took Sth place in the State Championship up in Phoenix. One member of the club, Kenny Marrow. took lst on second board. With the help of the team captain, Gavin Whar- ton, and the clubs advisor, Mrs. Schriber, it was a good year. l. Jr. Civitan officers keep other members informed of the latest news. 2.
