Her concern and interest hove been tried again and again and has proven her ability to bring out the most in ourselves. Sister has held our community together through problems of recent years. More than that, she has succeeded in widening our views. The learning experience of Sacred Heart now offers the student body more opportunities to be themselves. V V A warm welcome rs extended to the new vice-principal, Sr. Geraldine. Despite a three year absence, she has quickly re-established herself at Sacred Heart of Mary. Besides being homeroom teacher of 1 02, teaching, and moderator of student council. Sister is always willing to give extra time to listen to students and help them with any problems. Her active involvement has served to intro- duce her to many of the students. 18 Left to Right: Mrs. Freda Johnson, secretary; Mrs. Ana Marie Lopez, sec- retory; Mr. Nick Beilhorz, custodian; Sr. Teresita, attendance, o v. 19 Left to Right: Mrs. Rabieb Sour, Librarian; Sr. Bernard, Chemistry, Physi- cal Science, Homeroom 1 ; Mrs. Michele Roinis, English, Religion, Home- | room 2; AAi Kothryn Leahy, Biology, Business Math, Homeroom 1 06. | A. 20 Left to Right: Sr. Agnes, Latin and English; Sr. Margaret Ellen, cafeteria and bookroom; Sr. Dolores, Business Moth and Typing, homeroom 109; Sr. Bernodette, Business. 21 22 Left  o Right: Sr. Kathleen, Math and Homeroom 1 08; Mrs. Genie Mildon, English and Homeroom 111; Mrs. Myrna Dysart, Physical Education and Pyschology; Miu Carmen Cabrera, Spanish. 23 Left to Right; Miss Marilyn McCandeless, Spanish; Mrs. Mary Lou Wilder, Typing and Etookkeeping; Mrs. Ida Jones, Busi- ness, English; Mr. Michael Braymer, Religion and Business Moth. Our first year was spent mak- ing new friends, feeling lost and changing inside and out. Now in 1 974, a scared group of seniors must leave SHM. Our last year has been spent growing closer to old friends, feeling lost and changing inside and out. The years in between have really sped by. Our seniors helped us feel welcome during our first year of high school. They greeted us with Froshmas , celebrated by re-writing an old Christmas carol and giving us candy. With their support, making our way through our very first candy and ticket drives was easier. Yet we didn ' t realize how much they had meant to us and how much we had coun- ted on them, until that tearful day when they graduated. Sophomore year brought us our first date dance and the knowledge that we were truly port of a community here. We spent endless hours decorating for Spirits weeks, our Sophomore Dance and Pan-Am day. Many of us became involved in the Cantwell-SHM musical, Guys and Dolls . By then we had become fully initiated in the spirit of enthusiasm and friendliness that is a unique and impor- tant part of SHM. Our Junior year was full of bright memories. Pan-Am saw our first great victory. However, Ring Day is what will always make our third year special. After a beautiful mass, everyone excitedly showed everyone else her ring. The class slumber party that night was a zany marathon of games and pranks. We regained our decorum in time for the prom at the Bel-Air Country Club. We impa- tiently looked forward to class day when we would be able to sit in the senior section and be Seniors! Upholding senior tradition we made a clean sweep of our last candy drive. Our day at Disneyland proved to have been worth waiting for. As we prepare for Pan-Am and Field Day, we hope to leave our freshmen with the appreciation we feel for our school, teachers and friends. And in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you give 30 Li MARIE ALVARADO FONDEST MEMORY: My freshmen Undo and Liz, my Sophomore Mory Ann, Senior Retreat, Ring Day. Including such incidents as forgetting locker combinations and walking into the wrong classes, that year holds memories we will always treasure. Now, as Sophomores, we realize that time and memories are something precious. But memories are not the only things that bind a class together. It ' s their spirit. And the spirit of ' 76 glows in each and every one of us. It showed in the candy drive. Selling cose after case not only expressed our spirit, but drew us together in an effort to come out on top. And we come pretty close. Winning second place was reward enough for all our ruined complexions. Our Sophomore Dance is another treasured memory. With the theme A Marvelous Night For A Moon Dance, it was indeed a marvelous night. The Queen and Princesses looked radiant as they danced among the crowd. It was a memorable night; a once in o life-time experience. Rushing through these active years we find ourselves involved in many more tfiings than we deemed possi- ble. Day by day, sharing one another ' s joy, we became closer and closer. Much to our surprise, the school year is coming to an end. Looking back, we will always remember the warm welcome we received during Freshman Initiation Week. Many activities such as pep rallies, the candy drive and the competition during field day made school not only school, but rather a place you wanted to go to. For this we thank Br. Noonan. Working right along with him ore the respective club presidents. Sheila Flavin and Pot Odou. This year has been on exceptionally busy one right from the first week of school. A new type of entertainment called Storytheatre was attempted. A group of five boys and five girls formed the Traveling Troupe and performed for var- ious organizations throughout the year. The Drama Festival also introduced new types of drama to the students. Young actors tried their hand at panto- mime, improvisation, and various group scenes. An original musical A Little Sky Magic was the next production. Written by Br. Noonan and Dave Brisbin, it was performed for several grammar schools in early December. Our spring musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying , starring Stephanie Chavarrio and Lorraine Boltazor, was a great success. Special thanks to Mrs. Mildon, SHM moderator, Br. Petit, Br. Heustis, and Br. The idea was to find girls who got involved in the different activities around the school. Eleven semi-finalists: Nan Moldonado, Terry Lopez, Lisa Dyvig, Cecilia Diaz- Infante, Terri Riley, Raquel Legaspi, Mary Ann Garcia, Pat Mall, Sandy Montoya, Marie Solorzano, and Cynthia Machuca were selected by their respective homerooms. As the festivities commenced. Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Zim- merman introduced the eleven girls to the audience, who were also favored with a special appearance by Vicki Star, and the presence of June Loveheort. As the judges deliber- ated, the faculty performed as a Kazoo Chorus while Mr. Zimmerman sang Washington at Valley Forge. They were followed by the Senior Class ' own Sweetheart Dancers who hotfooted it to Alley Cat. A faculty skit developed by Betty Herman and Dorene Wagner, portraying a typical day at SHM, was next. The judges finally reached their decision, and the four finalists were introduced to the multitude. They were: Raquel Legaspi, Sandy Montoya, Terri Riley, and Marie Solorzano. While the judges wrestled with their deci- sion, Mr. Zimmerman, supported by Lolani and her Wacky Woo ' s, seranaded the finalists with that tender love song from the islands, Ukelele Lady. After this, the judges rejected any furtuneful enterprises, and presented Mr. Zim- merman with the name of the winner. Marie Solorzano was chosen Queen, and took her walk down the runway of honor, while photographers popped her picture and the school tumultuously applauded the Queen. Mr. and Mrs. Dracula had a fine time. This year ' s Halloween party was held at our own S.H.M. com- plete with entertainment provided by the Power House , food to be eaten and booths of gomes to be played! The Seniors produced a Hall of Terror for the entrance, while Juniors foretold the future. Sophomores captured victims in a jail booth and the Freshmen ' s booth of confetti eggs seemed to catch most people by surprise. Although most of us missed our night out trick-or-treating , we will still look forward to another fun-filled evening next year. Oh! No! Santa surprises a good little girl with a life size Raggedy Ann and Andy! The students and faculty of S.H.M. thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Assembly. Santa made a surprise entrance and with the help of his elves and animated toys distributed gifts and Christmas cheer! 107 candy drive At SHM there are two things that are inevitable: tuition and the Candy Drive. Each year the Drive is heralded by a roily held between the classes, each proving themselves to have the most spirit. The whole object of this frenzied activity is to sell as many cases of that luscious World ' s Finest as possible so that the winning class can take a day off from their studies to troop on down to Disneyland. Each class more than willingly sets off, standing endless hours in front of stores, wearing their loafers to a mere frazzle in hopes of selling the most candy. This year, the senior class proved their salesmanship and with their tired, aching feet grate- fully accepted first prize: a free trip to Disneyland. It ' s a senior privilege to unload the boxes of candy. Spirits run high during the condy drive. 108 Th« guitar players of the Liturgical Club. The girls are interviewed privately by the judges and sub- mit transcripts and autobiographies. After two weeks of rehearsals, the Pageant itself seems just a short night of ten- sion and excitement. This past summer, two of our seniors. Rose Ann Ramos and Mayra Rodriguez, took advantage of this opportunity and spent six adventurous v eeks traveling throughout Europe. Spain, the land of Flamenco dancing and bull fights was first on the itinerary. In Spain, the group toured Madrid, Segovia, Toledo, and La Granja visiting such famous landmarks as the Prado Museum, the Valley of the Fallen, and the Royal Palace. After a week ' s stay, they flew to Italy and toured the ancient streets of Rome marveling at the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the ruins of Hadr ian ' s Villa and the Tivoli Fountains. They also were present for a Papal audience at the Vatican. From Italy the group journeyed to Austria and stayed in the small picturesque town of Hallein. After a week in Austria, they again moved on, this time to France. Paris with its exciting night life, tiny sidewalk cafes and exotic cuisine was one of the girls ' favorite cities. From there they took o ferry across the English Channel to their last stop, England. The pace quick- ened in England as there was much sightseeing to do during the week spent there. Before they realized it, the final week of their tour was ended. They had many good times to remember and many new friends never to be forgotten. The beautiful Princesses were Kathy Davis, escorted by Joe Destito, and Kathy Voldivia, escorted by Art Villa. 125 marvelous night In a small town, there was held in the cool evening end days of winter an annual boll. Every maiden anxiously looked forward to its arrival, when she too would be able to attend. As sure as the moon hangs in the sky, the night of the ball came. On the ninth day into the month of February, the maid- ens dressed in all their finery started for the ball. They arrived to the ballroom transformed and filled with starlight and sweet music while dancers whirled around to the sounds. As time flew into the night, the announcement of the Queen come. Which of the fair princesses, Judy de Lao, Gra- de Sauceda, or Irene Serna was it to be? She was named — it was Queen Gracie Sauceda who reigned over the night.
