The Nurse YVith confidence and surety that comes From term of practice and of study, too, She reaches humbly with her gentle hands, To take the scarf Veronica holds forth A scarf with which to Wipe the blood and sweat From men-made in the image of their Godl A scarf to bind the wounds and brace the limbs, Of those who falter from a thousand Woes. And with this scarf in hand, she journeys down The corridors of mercy, unafraid. Dressed in the cap of Hope, the gown of Faith, And cape of Charity, she goes her way, Vllhere pain of birth and pain of death cry out, VVhere aching sobs go echoing to meet The vacant laughter of the unraveled mind. Her soothing touch, bright smile, and cheerful word, Her Whispered prayers, the comfort that she brings, Leave health, or shining courage where she walks. And where she goes her White shoes follow paths Made by the sandals the great Healer Wore. Her joys shall be to see the sick made Well, And useful lives returned from agony, To see the twisted limb made straight, to see The happy mother with her newborn babe.
