We began our Junior year in the fall of 1977. It was a very busy year and the first challenge was homecoming. The boys put on our own version of the movie “Star Wars.'' We built a bonfire on the east side of the school. During the month of December the juniors decorating ability was put to the test when they decorated the ceiling of the Tiehen Gym for the Christmas Formal. To raise money for the junior-senior prom, the juniors delivered the telephone books. With the help of Mrs. Raymond Vinsonhaler and Sister Ann. this project was carried off smoothly in spite of the weather On Friday. May 5. the junior-senior prom was held in the Elks Club Ballroom with the theme: ‘Grand Illusion. With this year coming to a close, the Juniors are looking forward to their last year at Sacred Heart. Athletics Irish Rebuild To A Winning Season The Sacred Heart Irish rebuilt their team to produce a fine winning season After losing many players to graduation, and acquiring a new coach in Lonnie Ford, the Irish had many open spots on the line-up. Coach Ford and his team, which used a number of underclassmen, won their first five games of the season. The Irish played some of their games in adverse weather, and still overcame the opponents. Reflections From The Past It was a fall day in 1974 when 25 hesitant freshmen walked through the high school doors for the first time. We started off with the traditional initiation. We were dressed in the style of the 50's with greased-back hair and T-shirts for the boys; bobbie socks, ponytails and full skirts for the girls. Each boy had a big brother and each girl had a big sister to keep an eye on us during the initiation. We played a number of games such as the wheel-barrel race, and a race to see who could put a lot of clothes on over their own and then get the clothes back off again. There was a bulletin board filled with our baby pictures and the school had a contest to see who could guess each of us. The freshman class officers were numerous that year, but the final outcome saw Lynne Coupe, president. Mimi Cowles, vice-president; Doug Cowan, secretary; and Mary Bennett, treasurer. Our class sponsor for that year was Coach William Jenkins. We added three new boys to our class our first year. Jeff Keithley. Kevin Taft, and Mike Hall (who later transferred to a different school during the same year). We weren't the only new students to enter high school that year because we acquired two new exchange students from South America. Lillian Valasquez. who lived with Sandra Schawang s family, and during the second semester of our freshmen year, she came, and Carlos Maia who stayed with Renee Kreifel's family. One of our classes that year was World History taught by Coach Jenkins. In that class most of the students ended up at the chalk board with their nose in a circle of chalk. Our English class that year was separated into two groups with Sister Agnes Clare teaching us the grammer that we had forgotten in just a few months Miss Janet Corman taught our class Spanish I — well, you have to give her credit for trying to teach us Spanish I. at least. At our first Christmas formal our job was preparing and serving the punch. Being freshmen, we thought a lot of the seniors and one in particular was Steve Kopetzky. At a football game in Cook. Nebraska, in which S. H. opposed the Nemaha Valley Cardinals, he was fattally injured. It was a very sad time for all of us. but we can't help remembering his determination in everything he did and he will long be remembered by all of us at Sacred Heart. Completing our first year of high school was a big achievement for our class, but we made it. At the beginning of our sophomore year Jeff Keithley left us and Randall Smith came to take his place. Randall transferred to Sacred Heart from Falls City High. The class officers for that year were: Mimi Cowles, president; Nancy Froeschl. secretary; and Connie Olberding. treasurer. Money making projects were making popcorn during the home basketball games, and the sock hop we had scattered throughout the year. That year we welcomed three new teachers to the faculty. Mrs. Hank Schwartz. English II. Ill and Money Matters; Sister Madeleva, band and chorus; and Sister Linda, record keeping, bookkeeping, shorthand and Typing I and II We had a very successful season in football that year ranking 9th in Class D. The musical that we presented was 'Celebration '76”. a mixture of song numbers from ' Oklahoma’' to the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Under the direction of Sister Madeleva the show was a great success. We learned new dance steps from Marilyn Butler, a choregrapher from Kansas City. Our exchange students for that year were Christiana Maia and Asael Rangel from South America. Christiana stayed with the Mark Kreifel's family and is the sister of Carlos Maia who was here the year before. Asael stayed with the Bill Kopetzky family and also has a brother. Martin, who was here a few years ago. A couple of noteworthy sophomore activities included decorating the stage for the Christmas formal, and ordering our class rings. Every sophomore class takes biology from Sister Hilaria and most of us learned what type of blood we have, at least those who could get up the nerve to poke themselves learned. We made it through our last year of Spanish with the help of Sister Linda's constant drilling. We were soon to leave our underclassmen years behind as we ended our sophomore year and became juniors. Our junior year began as the busiest year of our school days. We had a new addition to our class of 25 — Kathy Stratton from Norfolk. Nebraska. This brought our class total to 26. New classes that were offered to the juniors were: Typing I. Shorthand I. and physics, offered alternate years with chemistry. Terry Tobikawa. an exchange student from Japan, lived with the Ray Vinsonhaler family. 34 One of the highlights of our junior year was the building of the bon fire for Homecoming '76. We were in charge of the skit for the pep rally that night and the boys did a spin-off from Hee-Haw At our Christmas formal we decorated the ceiling of our gym The climax of the junior year was the decorating of the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held in the Elks Club Ballroom with the theme: “We Could Exist on the Stars.'' The music was provided by the group Thunderbird.” The only money making project was cleaning the Jug Brown Stadium after our home football games The athletic season that year was both exciting and disappointing We had made it to the State football palyoffs in Wolbach. Nebraska, but we lost 21-20. We were also Galaxy Football Conference Champions. In basketball as well as football, the Irish soared. Our basketball record for that season was 22-2. We got beat in the District Championship by the Adams Hornets by seven points which ended the season s basketball attempts at going to state. This was the first season for girl's sports at Sacred Heart. Volleyball was first followed later by basketball. Neither seasons were as successful as we had hoped, but the girls were beginning to show more skill and learned more of the techniques. Ahead we hope for successful years athletically and academically for boys and girls at Sacred Heart. Our musical was a combination of “South Pacific and Bye Bye Birdie. The teen idol, Conrad Birdie captured the hearts of every girl in Sweet Apple. Ohio, and the tropics came to Nebraska as Bloddy Mary and Mellie Forbush entertained the sailors on a South Pacific island. As our senior year began, we added a new classmate. Julie Kunce. from Onawa. Iowa. Robin Prater went on to finish her senior year at Falls City High and our class roster stayed at 26. Tom Carpenter joined our class at the semester to take a few courses here. The big event of the fall semester was Homecoming. We decorated the rooms in the high school and painted our Homecoming truck. She was named Tiki after Matt Sant's mother. We didn't have sufficient funds to buy a Homecoming car so we borrowed Matt's truck, which was to return to him after Homecoming. We used tempera paint on the truck and prayed that It wouldn’t rain until after Homecoming. With the Irish luck. Tiki made it to the bon fire in almost one piece. Mary Bennett was crowned queen and John McGuire was crowned king at the half time of the Homecoming football game between the Irish and Nemaha Valley. We won the game 52-0.
