The girls undertake this activity in full spirit and also have many happy times playing softball. PING PONG The klickity-klack of a ping pong ball echoes through the gym during class, any season of the year. Ping pong is played indoors, and although there is little running around, one needs to be very skillful in placing the ball. REMEDIAL Slumps, slouches and measurements are all corrected in the remedial department of the girls' sport division. Exercises of all sorts are employed in this class. Girls who desire to lose those extra pounds are usually found working very hard. 945' ...pa f ' c BADMINTON Badminton season is eagerly awaited by the girls every year. Badminton is played indoors and outdoors by qirls. Tournaments are held every Tuesday after school, and many of the girls have really become quite expert. BASKETBALL H271 One of the main activities taking place in the girls' gym during winter and early spring, is the exciting game of basketball. Girls in every gym class form teams and hold tournaments. ln order to win it is necessary that the girls have perfect team work and skill in handling the ball. Approximately one hundred boys turned out for the events and many made a good showing. Coach Weems predicted a strong team with most of the strength in the dashes. In the field events the only strong event showing up so far, is the pole vault. For the first meet of the year the Dragons traveled to Auburn for a dual meet. ln the first half, Auburn seemed to be walking away with all of the events, but with a saving surge of strength, the Sacramento A team captured the meet 55 to 49. In the B division there was no question but that Sacramento had a better team. The B team secured a 71 to 31 victory. Placer won the class C competition by taking the last event, making the score 31 to 28. ln a practice meet with San Iuan, the following week, Sacramento won the A division, but lost in the B and C classes. Then, in the biggest meet of the season, the Dragon A's placed second against thirteen other schools at the annual Auburn lnvitational. All in all, it is conceded that Sacramento made a creditable showing. Coach This year the Sacramento Dragons were faced with more than the threats of opposing teams. Many eligible players were .either working after school or had left for the armed forces. ln the first two games of the year, the Dragons overwhelmed the Lodi Flames 20-0, and then ac- counted for a favored Woodland team 7-6. Two games to the good the Purple and White were next downed 39-6 in a game with the unbeatable team from Stockton, who later beat Grant for the San loaquin Conference. The game with Stockton proved to be only the first in a series of defeats. For next McClatchy edged out a 7-0 heart breaking score. Then Grant trounced the local boys 24-6 in the first game and 37-0 in the second game. Thanksgiving day and the Dragons met the Mc- Clatchy Lions. In one of the most thrilling games of the year, Sacramento lost I3-12. Ending the season, the Dragons traveled to Woodland and suffered another defeat to the tune of 13-12. The number was great and that made it hard for a good decision. The following were chosen: For President, Beverly Bouillon: Vice President. Robert Laidlaw: Secretary, Belva Rulep Treasurer, Bob Sweetman: and Senator, Caroline Jensen. The Sopho- more Fling was a great success, and that gave us a feeling of warm welcome. When we went into our High Sophomore year, the new Sophomores came in and we carried out the old tradition of the Sophomore Rush, which we lost. The boys won all but one of their events but the girls lost all theirs. This was a great let down but we have gotten over it now. Now we are looking forward to our Iunior year. We gave a twenty five dollar war bond. After the war we can turn it in and buy something that is needed. Many things are hard to get and right now we wouldn't be able to get full value for our money. We know that it is helping the boys who come from our high school and who are now in the service. Les McMeans, who was elected president of our high junior class is in the service now and it was with him in mind that we gave our war bond. Ben Thomas is substituting for Les.
