Among its features are a loud speaking system which can be regulated in dit- ferent parts of the auditorium, indirect lighting, an electrically run curtain, an orchestra pit, and the latest type of sound-proof music rooms. We are sure that many classes for many years will appreciate and benefit greatly from this marvelous auditorium. V s is gc ui ji , Q i X5 f 4 J ' an , -,. , Yi v ' 7 Q. The governmental activities are divided into three departments: the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. The legislative department is the senate, which enacts laws concerning the welfare of the student body. The executive department is the cabinet, made up of ten students who are charged with carrying out the provisions of the laws passed by the senate. The judicial department is the supreme court, which is composed of three students and two faculty members and which interprets questions arising over the wording and meaning of the school constitution. There is also a student government class comprised of student body officers and others interested in student affairs. This Sass conducgi-investigations into student body and school needglanclurrians recommendations to the principal. By these methods the students of the school receive valuable training as future voters and citizens of the United States. A succession of brilliant events featured the three year high school career of the February class of l94O. Among the highlights of their many activities was a successful low sophomore class picnic attended by 265 students. Games and an evening dance furnished recreation. The junior Prom during the high junior semester will long be a pleasant memory as one of the most successful dances. A huge dragon with illuminated eyes furnished an excellent background for the annual Senior Ball. George Breece's orchestra played. The central committee which arranged plans for the ball was Newton Wise, president, Frances Wight, vice president, and Dorothy Varrasso. Completing the three years of high school life the officers and class council members were the guests of Miss Constance Greenwood, sponsor, at supper and program in the Y. W. C. A. The enthusiasm and spirit shown by these students are symbolic of the future citizens of tomorrow! Below-Senators: Bob Todd, Betty Dyberg, and Bob johnson. Had- wig: Radko. une Class of 1940 FALL OFFICERS Top Left f' Dana Fuller, President-A gentleman at all times and responsible for many of the successful affairs held by the class of june, l94O. Center Left-Mary Greg- ory, Secretary-Mary, Mary, quite extraordinary-in fact, she's got all that it takes and then some. Top Right - Barbara Leonard, Vice President- Freckles are her trademark and sauciness their accom- paniment. Center Right - Frances Holdener, Treasurer-Always gracious and competent, she is a typical leader of the city's younger set. With the Pornp and Circumstanceu of graduation draw- ing nearer every day, we pause to look back on the record we have made as the lune Class of l94O. We began our high school career as the greenest of low sophomores, but it was not long before we found our place in the academic and social life of the school. Our first triumph came when we won the sophomore rush, a feat which we repeated as high sophomores. Our class is the first in the history of the school to win the sophomore rush both times. As the highlight of our junior year, we all turned out to enjoy a wonderful time at our Prom. lt was this year that the council started its semi-annual banquets. These have proved a source of much pleasure and were looked forward to with keen anticipation. une Class of 1940 SPRING Top Left--Lois Wehrman, President-As efficient and vivacious a class president as ever banged a gavel. Center Left-lane Wins- low, Secretary-A cute little freckle-face who will surely go places because of her great capability. OFFICERS Top Right-Bev Cayman, Vice President - Likes to joke, yet is capable of sincere wholehearted cooperation with others. Center Right - Wynn Redman, Treasurer - Quiet, unassuming, capable, and re- sponsible, accomplishing deeds with never a stir. As upper classmen and with showcases as our class gift decided upon, we eagerly turned to the Senior Ball as the most gala event of our high school days. The grand march, the large blinking dragon, and the formal attire of the dancing couples are memories that we shall always keep. Then from our talented midst was picked a select cast to present our senior play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. This was truly a magnificent spectacle worthy of the new auditorium where it was presented. ln a few days we shall be the chief participants in the graduation exercises-the climax of our high school days. As we listen to the commencement speeches, we can hold our heads high and be proud of ourselves, for we shall have left behind us a really commendable record of achieve- ment. l Senators-Left to Right- Kathryn Griffin - Twice a Senator and very active in school organizations. Dan Cowans-An ambitious boy whose goal is West Point. Constance Williams - Her ou .ti angie yi it -sf. -'5ff,.x super. super poise accentu- ates hcl' deep personality. At the end of the spring semester the class is looking forward to its high senior year. At meetings held regularly at homes of the members the class council has decided many important issues, among them a design for the class ring. The class gift was discussed but has not been decided upon. Members of the council enjoyed a skating party in March and the entire class will take part in a picnic to be given in june. The traditional Senior Ball is being eagerly awaited as the highlight of our last term at the Sacramento High School. Home Room Group ,lar 336513 UNH! 5 ,...x..,-x-F .WN W M. Together with their capable and reliable sponsor, Mrs, Helen Spincller, they have ac- complished the impossible, or what seemed to be such. The class council members entered whole-heartedly into social as well as student body enterprises. Perhaps the highlight of the year's activities was Star Night, the junior Prom. The central committee who made this dance such a huge success consisted of the following: Wallace Rhodes, Low junior Class President: Helen Demuth, Low junior Vice President: Bob Wilson, High junior Presi- dent: and Barbara Haynes, High junior Vice President. une Class 1941 Top-Left - Sophie lo- seph, Vice President. A committee was appointed by the president of the spring class, Marilyn Switzer, to work with the low seniors in select- ing a class gift. Suggestions included a drinking fountain, chimes, or a huge painting for the library. The committee is composed of the following: Ho Crow, Marian Wicrert, Lvorothy Rogers, lack Ross, Peggy McClelland, Lambert Ren- strom, Wilbur Green. At the sound of the bell, six hundred and fifty new low sophomores invaded the Sacramento Senior High School. They were given purple bows and treated to a sophomore rush, both of which they lost. Later a truce was declared and a dance was given by the Pepperettes and dance com- mittee in honor of the low sophs, who proved themselves experts at the art of fun. More than three hundred of us, from five dif- ferent junior high schools, each had this same thought when for the first time we walked through the doors of the Sac- ramento Senior High School. At first we were backward and bashful, but with the as- sistance of such a fine sponsor as Hiss Helen Hart we elected our class officers and were all in the school spirit ready to participate in school affairs. Our big chance came, for the Sophomore Rush was held on February Zl. We fought with a keen spirit but never the less lost. Determined we are, though, to win next fall. The students of the class of I943 are eager to be leaders in the school. FIRST BATTALION The lst Battalion, Reserve Officers' Corps of the Sacramento High Schools has completed its fifth year under the direct super- vision and complete sponsorship of the War Department. This means that during this period all uniforms and equipment, as well as the services of the professor of Military Science Tactics and the instructor directly in charge have been furnished by that agency. ln return, the War Department has required only that certain standards of instruction and training be maintained. Detailed by the War Department as Professor of Military Science Tactics for the Sacramento High Schools is Lieut. Colonel Carl S. Doney, Coast Artillery Corps, U. S. Army. ln direct charge of the Sacramento High School unit is Sgt. Claude l. Hilton, U. S. Army, who has brought the unit to a high state of efficiency. ' The purpose of ROTC training is to instill an orderly mode ofiwl life, a well-grounded respect for constituted authority, a prompt and cheerful habit of obedience, and to develop leadership, poise, and self-control. The achievement of this battalion during the past year has been outstanding in all respects. ln addition it has provided special functions for the school such as the Military Traffic Company, which controls traffic around the school at critical periods and has been largely responsible for the preven- tion of serious accidents. The annual military ball, under the sponsorship of the Girl Colonel and her staff, has become one of the leading social events of the school year. The battalion received considerable public acclaim for its appearance and marching in the Armistice Day and Memorial Day parades, where the neatness, manly appearance, and upright :arriage of the boys was very noticeable. F. Northern Section Conference. Their season ended fairly successfully considering the competition with which they were faced in the strong teams of Woodland, Modesto, and McClatchy. In points the Dragons had a total of only 65 scored against them as compared with the ll5 that they scored on their opponents. ln the snap-shot below, Head Football Coach, George Relles, is caught talking things over with Line Coach, jimmy Flynn. The picture to the right is of Captain Lyle Wilson, who broke his ankle in the Stockton game, after scoring two touch downs and a conversion. There are at the present time approximately two hundred students participating in the sportg and recently upon popular demand of the students, a mixed class of and girls was started. This change indicates the interest men are taking toward this form of recreation all over the world. Tennis Because all tennis classes have been disbanded for the present time, the newly formed tennis club took over all school tennis activities for girls.
